Viviers
semicircular Theatre Antique, situated in the centre of town, was built just
before the birth of Christ. Accommodating 7,000 spectators, its acoustics are
superb. This is also the only Roman theatre still possessing its original
Imperial statue of Caesar Augustus, which, at 12 feet in height, is one of the
tallest in existence. Sail this afternoon for Viviers. This evening join London
Festival Opera for a highlight performance of Verdi’s ‘La Traviata’ performed
in costume.
Day 6 Viviers. Spend the morning in the sleepy southern Ardeche town of
Viviers which has retained its old world charm. A guided tour will include the
Bishop’s Palace, Cathedral and La Maison des Chevaliers. Sail south this
afternoon and relax on board before mooring overnight in Avignon. This
evening take an optional excursion to the Aix en Provence festival (please
note that dates and performances are subject to change and availability).
Day 7 St Remy de Provence & Les Baux de Provence. Enjoy a half day tour
to St Remy de Provence, proud possessor of one of the truly great funerary
memorials of the Roman world, the cenotaph erected in honour of the
grandsons of Augustus, Gaius and Lucius – also the Romanesque cloister of
St-Paul-de-Mausole at St-Remy de Provence. Vincent Van Gogh was treated
here for fifty-three weeks. Return to the ship for lunch and enjoy an
afternoon sailing to Arles. After our Farewell Dinner join London Festival
Opera in the lounge for their final performance ’A Night at the French Opera’.
Day 8 Arles to London. Disembark this morning and transfer to Marseille for
your return scheduled flight to London.
