Palais des Papes, Avignon<br />

from the Uzes area. Continue to historic Uzes, a gem of a town with a<br />

captivating history and some imposing and very beautiful buildings<br />

including the castle of the Ducs d’Uzes. Moor overnight in Avignon.<br />

Day 4 Avignon. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast from our mooring in Avignon.<br />

Enclosed by medieval walls, this great City of the Popes boasts a number of<br />

splendid museums, churches and palaces. Our morning guided tour will<br />

include the Palais des Papes, one of the wonders of Provence, the Cathedral<br />

and famous Pont Benezet. Relax this afternoon as we sail north to Vienne.<br />

This evening join London Festival Opera for a highlight performance of<br />

Verdi’s ‘La Traviata’ in costume.<br />

Day 5 Vienne & Lyon. A restful morning cruising to the fine Roman town of<br />

Vienne, beautifully located in the Rhone Valley and surrounded by hills. This<br />

afternoon we will visit the temple of Augustus and Livia, the Roman theatre,<br />

and the Romanesque-Gothic Cathedral of St Maurice. Return to the ship as<br />

we continue to the imposing city and gastronomic capital of Lyon where the<br />

Rhone and Saone meet.<br />

Day 6 Lyon & Macon. This morning we explore Lyon, a 2000 year old city<br />

and UNESCO World Heritage Site. During our tour we will travel up Fourviere<br />

Hill where we will see Vieux Lyon stretching along the right bank of the<br />

Saone with its districts of St. Jean, St. Paul and St. Georges. Continue to the<br />

Musee des Beaux Art (Museum of Fine Arts), one of the largest French and<br />

European museums. Located in the heart of Lyon, it is found in a magnificent<br />

building dating from the 17th century. Cruise north this afternoon for Macon.<br />

Day 7 Cluny & Beaune. Today we will drive to Cluny and see the famous<br />

monastery which was the centre for the reformed spiritual renewal of<br />

Western monasticism in the 10th and 11th centuries. Rejoin the ship in<br />

Tournus before sailing to Chalon sur Saone during lunch. From our mooring<br />

we will take a tour to Beaune and visit the world-famous 15th century<br />

Hospices de Beaune, with its remarkably decorated roof, gallery, kitchen and<br />

a well-preserved idea of how the beds would have looked in the Grand Salle<br />

des Malades. Beaune is a blend of cobbled streets, medieval half-timbered<br />

houses, flowered squares and gardens. After our Farewell Dinner join London<br />

Festival Opera in the lounge for their finale performance ’A Night at the<br />

French Opera’.<br />

Day 8 Chalon sur Saone to London. Disembark after breakfast and transfer<br />

to Lyon or Geneva airport for the return scheduled flight to London.<br />
