Conditions of Sale 

Lots Sold to The Highest Bidder: The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the buyer. Under no circumstances are the consignors 

or the consignors‚ agents or persons acting on behalf of the consignors permitted to bid at the auction on their consigned property. The auctioneer 

has the right to reject any bid, to advance the bidding at his or her absolute discretion and, in the event of any dispute between bidders or any other 

issue with respect to the highest bidder, to determine the successful bidder, to continue the bidding or to reoffer and resell the lot in question. In 

the event of any dispute after the sale, John Moran Auctioneers‚, Inc., a California Corporation (hereinafter referred to as, JMA), record of final sale 

shall be conclusive. 

Lots are Sold AS IS. ALL PROPERTY IS SOLD AS IS AND ALL IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS ARE EXCLUDED. NEI-

CONDITION, SIZE, PROVENANCE, MEDIUM, SIGNATURE, INSCRIPTION, EXHIBITION (S), IMPORTANCE, RARITY, COUNTRY OR ORIGIN, AGE, 

GENUINENESS, SUBJECT HISTORICAL RELEVANCE, MONETARY OR OTHER VALUE, FRAMING OR LACK THEREOF, MOUNTING, CONSERVATION, 

COLOR (S), PALETTE, INSCRIPTION, EDITION, STYLE LABEL OR OTHER DESCRIPTOR. NO STATEMENT IN THE CATALOGUE, BROCHURES OR IN 

THE BILL OF SALE OR INVOICE OR BIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION OR STATEMENTS MADE BY THE AUCTIONEER DURING THE AUCTION OR 

ELSEWHERE SHALL BE DEEMED SUCH A WARRANTY OR REPRESENTATION OR AN ASSUMPTION OF LIABILITY. NO EMPLOYEE OF JOHN MORAN 

AUCTIONEERS IS AUTHORIZED TO MAKE, ON OUR BEHALF OR THAT OF THE CONSIGNOR, ANY REPRESENTATION OR WARRANTY, ORAL OR 

WRITTEN, WITH RESPECT TO ANY PROPERTY. 

Buyer’s obligation to inspect each item: Buyers are strongly encouraged to view all items auctioned on display before the auction to determine the 

true condition and nature of any item(s) of interest. Although there is no legal requirement that each buyer inspect lots purchased before the 

auction, the failure to inspect may constitute a waiver of that buyer’s complaint that the item was not delivered in a condition equal to the existent 

condition at the auction as described in section 14 of these Conditions of Sale. 

All Sales Final: Notwithstanding any other terms of these conditions, any and all refunds shall be given at the sole discretion of JMA. Refunds requested 

on the grounds of authenticity must be made within 10 days of the auction date, and such requests must be accompanied by at least one 

supporting statement in writing from a recognized authority stating that the painting or art sold is incorrect or not the work of the artist. A recognized 

authority shall be defined as a person who has authored, edited, or substantially contributed to a monograph on the artist, a person who has 

curated, organized or substantially contributed to a solo exhibition on the artist, a person who has represented the artists estate or someone who 

represented or worked closely with the artist while they were alive and, in any of the above instances physically handled works of the period, medium 

and subject matter in question during the course of their duties. Please note that dealers who advertise to buy a wide range of artists, appraisers 

and representatives of other auction firms do not qualify as authenticators of individual artists unless they have had such specific involvement with 

an artists work as specified above in addition to their daily duties. Any lot in question must be returned to JMA in the exact same condition as when 

sold. Please be advised that JMA does not grant extensions to refund considerations based upon authenticity due to shipping delays. There are no 

exceptions to this refund policy. 

The Right to withdraw Lots: JMA reserves the right to withdraw any lot before or at the sale. 

Buyer’s Premium: The purchase price payable by a buyer shall be the sum of the final bid plus a premium of 15% of the final bid price. 

(Effective June 1, 2006) 

A 20% buyer’s premium shall apply on all purchases made via ebay Live. 

Lots are Subject to a Reserve Price: Some lots in the auction are subject to a reserve, which is the confidential minimum price below which the lot 

will not be sold (the reserve). In no event will the reserve price exceed the low estimate. JMA shall act to protect the reserve by bidding through the 

auctioneer. The auctioneer may open bidding on any lot below the reserve by placing a bid on behalf of the seller. The auctioneer may continue to 

bid on behalf of the seller up to the amount of the reserve, either by placing consecutive bids or by placing bids in response to other bidders. The 

estimates provided by JMA concerning a given lot, are carefully considered opinions of the cataloguer and fine art staff. Any estimates given are 

merely suggestive guidelines for interested buyers. Buyers must be aware that paintings and art are subject to fluctuating values depending on the 

subjective interests of collectors and a wide variety of other uncontrollable factors. The lots auctioned may sell at prices either above or below estimates. 

Winning Bid Constitutes an Immediate Transfer of Title: Title to the offered lot shall pass to the buyer upon the fall of the auctioneer‚s hammer and 

announcement by the auctioneer that the lot has been sold, subject to compliance by the buyer with all other Conditions of Sale. The buyer shall 

forthwith assume full risk and responsibility for the lot and shall pay the full purchase price or such part thereof as JMA, in its sole discretion, shall 

require. In addition, the buyer may be required to sign a confirmation of purchase or abide by any other financial terms that JMA deems necessary 

to protect the interest of the consignors.

Conditions of Sale 

Removal of Purchased lots: All items sold may not be removed from JMA’s premises, or the premises of the auction, until the buyer has paid in full 

the purchase price therefor or has satisfied such terms, as JMA, in its sole discretion, shall require. Subject to the foregoing, all lots are to be paid 

for and removed from JMA premises at the buyer’s expense no later than the third calendar day following the sale, and, if not so removed, JMA may 

transfer any such lot to its warehouse at the risk and expense of the buyer. If a lot has not been collected the third calendar day following the sale 

and JMA does transfer the uncollected property to its warehouse, the buyer will be liable to JMA for storage and handling charges of $10.00 per day 

for each lot. In addition to other remedies available by law, JMA reserves the right to impose a late charge of 1% per month or the maximum permitted 

by law on the purchase price commencing on the day following the date on which payment is due if the buyer does not make payment in full 

in accordance with these Conditions of Sale. 

Absent Bidders: Bids which are submitted to JMA in writing or are otherwise left with JMA prior to an auction for execution at or below a specified 

price (Absentee bids), as well as telephone bids, shall be entertained and executed by JMA for the convenience of bidders not present at auction, but 

JMA shall not be responsible for failing to execute such bids or for errors relating to our execution of such bids. Bidding on any article(s), whether in 

person, by agent, order bid, telephone or other means, constitutes the highest bidders acceptance of these Conditions of Sale. All absentee bids 

must be received by JMA prior to the day of sale. Bidders by telephone are also encouraged to leave a cover bid in case of technical failure. 

Applicable taxes: Unless exempted by California law, the buyer shall be required to pay any applicable state and local sales tax or compensating use 

tax on the purchase price. 

Buyer’s Breach of Conditions of Sale: If the buyer fails to comply with any of these Conditions of Sale, JMA may, in addition to asserting all remedies 

available by law, including the right to hold such defaulting buyer liable for the purchase price, (I) cancel the sale, retaining as liquidated damages 

any payment made by the buyer, (II) resell the property without reserve at public auction or privately on seven days notice to the buyer, or (iii) take 

such other action as we deem necessary or appropriate. If JMA resells the property, the original defaulting buyer shall be liable for the payments of 

any deficiency in the purchase price and all costs and expenses, including warehousing, the expenses of both sales, reasonable attorneys‚ fees, 

commissions, incidental damages and all other charges due hereunder. In the event that such buyer pays a portion of the purchase price for any or 

all lots purchased, JMA shall apply the payment received to such lot or lots that JMA, in our sole discretion, deems appropriate. JMA shall have the 

benefit of all rights of a secured party under the Uniform Commercial Code adopted in the State of California where the auction is held. 

Governing Law, Venue and Jurisdiction: The rights and obligations of the parties with respect to the Conditions of Sale and the conduct of the auction 

shall be governed and interpreted by the laws of the State of California. By bidding at an auction, whether present in person or by agent, by 

absentee bid, telephone or other means, the buyer shall be deemed to have consented to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of such state and 

the federal courts sitting in such state. Further, the buyer agrees that the venue for any action arising out of the failure to abide by the Conditions of 

Sale, or any conduct related to or arising out of the auction, shall be the Los Angeles Superior Court, Pasadena Branch located at 300 E. Walnut 

Street, Pasadena, California 91101 or the Federal Court Central District located at 312 North Spring Street, Los Angeles, California, 90012-4793. 

The buyer expressly agrees that (I) neither JMA nor the seller shall be liable, in whole or in part, for any special, indirect or consequential damages, 

including, without limitation, loss of profits and (II) the buyer’s damages, if any, are limited exclusively to the original purchase price paid for the lot. 

Delivery of Lots Sold: The packing and handling of purchased lots by John Moran Auctioneer’s staff at the auction is undertaken solely as a courtesy 

to customers. There is no charge for packing material and labor supplied to you on the evening of the sale. In no event will JMA be liable for 

damage to painting, glass or frames regardless of cause in connection with this free service. 

JMA may, in our discretion and as a service to buyers, arrange to have purchased lots packed, insured and forwarded at the request, expense and 

risk of the buyer. JMA assumes no responsibility for acts or omissions in such packing or shipping by other packers or carriers, whether or not 

recommended by JMA. Nor does JMA assume any responsibility for any damage to picture frames or to the glass therein. In circumstances in which 

JMA arranges and bills for such services via invoice or credit card, JMA will include an administration charge. 

In the case of JMA personally delivering an item, if an item cannot be delivered in condition equal to the existent condition at the time of sale, or 

should any item be mis delivered, stolen or lost prior to delivery, JMA‚s liability shall not exceed the amount paid by the buyer at the auction. Buyers 

are strongly encouraged to view all items auctioned on display before the auction to determine the true condition of items of interest. 

Notices, Demands and Refunds: Any demands for refunds, problems with the lot(s) sold or notices of any kind concerning the auction shall be in 

writing and addressed to JMA at 735 West Woodbury, Altadena, California 91001. 

Effect of any Unenforceable Provisions: Should any of the Conditions of Sale be deemed unenforceable by a competent court having jurisdiction, 

such unenforceable provision shall have no effect on the enforcability of the remaining provisions contained in the Conditions of Sale.

1001 A French enamel & onyx reliquary font Raphael 

Late 19th century, the onyx backplate mounted with a champleve enamel frame and 

font, centered by a porcelain plaque depicting the Madonna and Child after Raphael, 

overall, 19'' H x 11.25'' W, est:$1200/1800. Provenance: The Elizabeth DarakjianTrust, 

Glendale, CA 

Condition: The plaque approximately 4.5'' x 3''. Nicely painted. Plaque affixed to onyx 

back. Enameling good. General light marks and scratches to surface commensurate 

with age, with a fine 2.5'' crack running from frame to outside eared edge at top right 

corner of backplate with a small triangular loss to underside. Area appears stable. With 

another similar but less noticeable crack to opposite corner. Also appears quite stable. 

1002 A near pair of Victorian portrait frame mirrors 

19th century, each with later oval plate within a beaded and molded rectangular 

surround, with stone-textured ground, the corners carved with scrolls, fans and berried 

branches, variations to size, the larger, 32.5'' H x 28.5'' W, est:$800/1200 

Condition: The smaller: 29.5'' x 26''. Giltwood and gesso. Nicely made. Originally 

portrait frames, later converted to mirrors. Decoration well executed. General marks, 

scratches, rubbing and darkening to surface, commensurate with age. Minor chipped 

losses to gilding and carved elements revealing white gesso, red bole and bare wood in 

areas. 

1003 A wrought iron & copper standing vase 

20th century, of trumpet form, the flared rim above a tapering body within a foliatecast 

stem on downswept supports ending in paw feet, 51'' H x 14'' Dia., est:$800/1000 

Condition: General marks, scratches, and minor losses to surface patina overall, 

particularly to copper vase. Minor dirt accumulation overall. 

1004 A Victorian burr walnut tantalus 

Second half 19th century, the rectangular hinged top opening to a red velvet-lined 

interior, with a divided drawer, with three later pressed glass decanters and a pair of 

etched cordial glasses, with handles to sides, 13.5'' H x 15'' W x 10.5'' D, est:$600/800 

Condition: Good overall condition. General marks, nicks and scratches commensurate 

with age. With good figuring and color to timber. Minor nicked losses to timber in 

areas. With oxidizing to metal hardware. Decanters later replacements, as stated. 

Cordial glasses possibly original. No key. 

1005 An English gilt-metal & mahogany 'Sterling' chest 

Late 19th/early 20th century, the rectangular caddy top opening to a lidded 

Ultrasuede-lined interior, the case of stepped spreading form, centered by a plaque 

within a foliate cornucopiae surround marked ''Sterling'', on brass-capped bun feet, 

7.5'' H x 23.5'' W x 17.5'' D, est:$500/700 

Condition: Good condition overall. With typical marks, nicks and scratches 

commensurate with age. Timber of a nutty brown color. Mounts slightly rubbed and 

with polish residue in crevices. Interior relined.

1006 A late Victorian rosewood marquetry writing desk 

Circa 1900, the rectangular black leather-inset top above a frieze drawer over a 

kneehole flanked by two banks of two drawers, on square tapering legs ending in 

porcelain casters, decorated overall with line inlay and foliate scrolls, 29'' H x 36'' W x 

19'' D, est:$300/500. Provenance: Property from the Estate of Billie Bowlby, Pasadena, 

CA 

Condition: Good condition overall. Nicely made. Structurally sound. Leather top 

possibly replaced. Some marks and minor stains to leather. Minor tight shrinkage crack 

running in from left side of top. General light marks and scratches overall 

commensurate with age and use. Some minor denting and bending to pulls. 

1007 A Continental enamel plaque Diana & attendants 

Late 19th/20th century, enamel on copper, depicting Diana with attendants in a cove, 

within a malachite-veneered frame, apparently unsigned, overall, 6.75'' H x 5.25'' W, 

est:$800/1200. Provenance: The Elizabeth DarakjianTrust, Glendale, CA 

Condition: Good condition overall. Nicely painted. With a 0.25'' scratch to center on 

pink and green drapery. With some nicked losses to edges - not visible when framed. 

Frame with some general marks and scratches - metal darkened. 

1008 After Juan Clara bronze young girls doll cats 

20th century, one signed ''Juan Clara'' (1875-1958, Spanish), depicting a little girl, 

''Suzette'', standing on a stool with a doll, the other depicting a little girl on a chair with 

cats, indistinctly marked, the larger, 12'' H x 6.5'' W x 6.25'' D, est:$700/1000.

Condition: The smaller: 11.75'' x 3.75'' x 3.25''. Good overall condition. With some 

rubbing to surfaces. With possible signature on chair leg rubbed and obscured. Typical

1009 Louis XVI style gilt bronze mantel clock Hersant 

Late 19th century, the movement marked ''Hersant Se../ de Chatelain / Paris'', the 

circular enamel dial with Arabic and Roman chapters surmounted by a flower-filled 

urn issuing acanthus scrolls, over a lion's head, on a bowed breakfronted base 

decorated with a laurel wreath, guilloche and acanthus sprays, on scroll feet, 18'' H x 

18'' W x 7'' D, est:$800/1200 

Condition: Re-gilt. Good overall condition. Decently cast. General light marks and 

scratches commensurate with age. With some marks and scratches to glass bezels. Face 

in good condition. Back bezel frame and door loose. Movement appears in tact and 

original. With pendulum. Working condition unknown and not guaranteed. No key. 

1010 A Continental gilt-bronze bust of a woman 

Late 19th century, depicting a woman with grapevine wreath headdress and a loose 

lion's pelt, on a fluted white marble pedestal base, overall, 13.5'' H x 5.5'' W x 5.5'' D,

Condition: Bust re-gilt. General marks, scratches and rubbing to surface. Mounts to 

base quite darkened. Some yellowing to bottom plinth. Some small chipped losses to 

marble of base.

1011 A Royal Vienna style porcelain charger classical 

Circa 1900, with blue beehive under-glaze mark indicating Bloch & Co., Bohemia and 

further marked ''38 cm/1540'', depicting a classical scene of a couple before a soldier 

attended by putti, within a gilt-decorated green and maroon border, 15'' Dia., 


Condition: Good condition overall. Light marks and scratches to surface, commensurate 

with age and use. With minor rubbing to decoration, particularly gilding at edges.

1013 A French spelter & Rouge Griotte clock garniture 

Late 19th century, marked ''Improvisation / par Flora'', comprising a clock and a pair 

of vases, the clock with circular enamel dial with Arabic chapters within a stepped case, 

surmounted by a female figure in a flowing gown with a harp, the vases of quiver form, 

on similar stepped bases, 3 pcs, the clock overall, 36.5'' H x 9.5'' W x 9'' D, 


Condition: The vases: 19'' x 8'' x 6.5''. General marks and scratches commensurate with 

age. Surface of metalwork rubbed and with losses to patina revealing white metal 

underneath. Figures right arm with crack to back at joint of shoulder. Appears stable. 

Marble with typical minor marks and chips. Movement appears intact. Working 

condition unknown and not guaranteed. One winding key. 

1014 A Louis XV style painted center table 

20th century, the serpentine top centering a scene of Venus and Cupid, above a 

conforming shaped frieze decorated with rose sprays, on cabriole legs, 29.5'' H x 24'' W 

x 24'' D, est:$600/800 

Condition: Structurally sound. With a heavy varnish to surface overall. Painted 

decoration decently executed. Craquelure to surface of painted scenes. Mounts roughly 

cast. General light marks, nicks and scratches. Very minor nicked losses to timber at 

edges. 

1015 A pair of Sevres style mounted porcelain vases 

Late 19th/20th century, each with central scene of Venus and Cupid signed ''P. Roche'' 

with floral sprays to reverse, on a cobalt ground with gilt highlights, with curved 

handles to sides, 2 pcs, 12.25'' H x 5.25'' W x 4.5'' D, est:$700/900 

Condition: Porcelain apparently unmarked. Decoration nicely executed. Good overall 

condition. General light marks and scratches to surface commensurate with age and 

use. Mounts somewhat rubbed and slightly darkened. One vase slightly loose, threading 

would benefit from tightening. Wreath mount to base indistinctly stamped twice on 

each to underside, possibly ''Henry'' (?).

1016 A Sevres style mounted porcelain covered vase 

Late 19th/20th century, with interlaced ''L'' marks centering a further ''L'' and also ''S. 

41 / Sevres'', of typical form, with female mask handles to sides, decorated with a scene 

of Venus & Cupid to one side signed ''R. Petit'', and a riverscape to the reverse, 17'' H x 

7.25'' W x 5.75'' D, est:$1200/1500 

Condition: Good condition overall. General light marks and scratches commensurate 

with age. Cobalt ground with inherent minute bubbled imperfections to surface. Some 

rubbing and darkening to mounts, particularly finial to lid and handles to body.

Clasp stamped ''Z & F''. 14k yellow gold (87 grams) with 23 US military ribbons/award 

charms inlaid with various colors of enamel, 7.5'' W x 1.38'' Dia., 87 grams,

Condition: Enamel shows evident chipping and scratches. Each charm and the bracelet

1069 Pairpoint Mt Washington Royal Flemish biscuit jar 

Circa 1900, the lid with Pairpoint hallmark and further marked ''4400'', the circular 

gadrooned lid above a scalloped and floral band with handle, over a stout body 

decorated with berried thorn branches and strapwork-decorated medallions, 7'' H x 

5.5'' Dia., est:$800/1200. Note: The Mt. Washington Glass Company was founded in 

Boston in 1837. In 1870 the firm was moved to New Bedford, MA and a few years later 

entirely reorganized by new general manager Frederick S. Shirley. Shirley introduced 

new, patented styles of glass and lines such as Burmese, Peachblow and Royal Flemish. 

In 1880, the Pairpoint Manufacturing Company established a factory neighboring the 

Mt. Washington works. The two companies merged in 1894 and in 1900 again 

reorganized to become the Pairpoint Company. The piece offered here is of the style of 

the Royal Flemish line from the Mt. Washington Glass Company and bears the 

Pairpoint hallmark exemplifying the amalgamation of the two firms 

Condition: Good overall condition. Metal mounts rubbed and darkened - with a pewter 

tone. General light marks, scratches and rubbing to surface commensurate with age 

and use. Slight dirt accumulation overall - would benefit from light cleaning. Possibly 

with overpainted to raised gilt areas - gilding to berries rubbed, revealing amber, green 

and opalescent colors underneath.

with age and use. Polish residue to crevices. Cream jug with ring base and feet 

somewhat dented in and misshapen. With a few dents to gadrooning and a minor ding 

to body. Model number mis-stamped with scratch through number. Coffee pot with 

scattered small dents and dings to body, mainly to gadrooning at bottom. Insulator 

caps yellowing and cracking.

1221 Continental marble Orientalist nude odalisque 

Late 19th century, depicting an odalisque seated on an Empire chaise, on an integral

Condition: Apparently unsigned. Probably formerly on a further base or with mounts as 

two corners of plinth rather roughly cut away. Very nicely carved and modeled. With 

typical light marks, scratches and rubbing to surface commensurate with age. Minor 

chipped losses to marble at back of hands and around edges, particularly underside of 

plinth.

cracking and minor losses to insulator rings on handles. Some polish residue in
