contemporary hand View near Abergavenny, 130 x<br />

*** Provenance: sold at Christies, October 12th,<br />
1971, as the work of Thomas Girtin (1775-1802).<br />
The composition certainly reflects the interest of the<br />
burgeoning class of watercolourists such as Girtin and<br />
Turner in picturesque sketching tours of such regions.<br />
Girtin also produced the soft-ground etched outlines for<br />
the plates of his famous series Selection of Twenty of<br />
the Most Picturesque Views in Paris, then completed in<br />
aquatint by F.C. Lewis and others.<br />
