Punta Candelero Shoreline Stabilization
Moffatt & Nichol provided a coastal engineering assessment of Punta Candelero, which had been affected by periods
of severe erosion, resulting in shoreline retreat and threatening development of the site. The assessment was designed to
evaluate the effectiveness of shore protection structures Based on the outcome of the physical model study, the preferred
alternative was a combination of a three-groin configuration at the central section of the Point, including beach fill, and
construction of a buried revetment to protect upland infrastructure during severe events.

Moffatt & Nichol was contracted by a confidential client to perform an analysis of an existing channel and turning
basin area at Port of Port Lavaca, Point Comfort in the Matagorda Bay, about 120 miles west of Houston, Texas.
Moffatt & Nichol utilized the fast-time, autopilot simulation software SHIPMA developed by MARIN (Maritime Research
Institute Netherlands) to perform a detailed computer-based simulation of the approach maneuvers. The model
accounts for shallow water effects and forces due to winds, currents, and waves, and can result in significant cost savings
over real-time simulations.
