like many landfills in North America, Glanbrook serves as an important repository for municipal solid waste that cannot be diverted or composted. Operational since 1980 and with an expected operating life of another 20-plus years, it sits on a 539-acre site between the Welland River and Buckhorn Creek. In late 2003, forward-thinking members of City council and staff commissioned a study to determine the feasibility of landfill gas recovery at the site. The study, conducted by CRA Consultants, concluded that the site could support a landfill gas-to-energy (LGE) plant because it produced more than 500 cubic feet per minute of gas – a threshold that was necessary to make the plant economically viable. Under the Ontario Power Authority’s (OPA) Renewable Energy Standard Offer Program, the City was also assured of getting favourable rates for the electricity generated. Following receipt of the study, the City formed Hamilton Renewable Power Inc. to finance the project and collect revenue from the energy generated from waste. The City also decided that construction and operation of the site would best be handled on a turn-key basis and in TOROMONT 2009 ANNUAL REPORT | 11 Each minute, the city of hamilton’s glanbrook landfill produces about 1,100 cubic feet of methane gas mixed with carbon dioxide. Rather than flaring this dangerous mix into the atmosphere, hamilton has turned this problem into a source of electrical energy and $2.8 million in annual revenue with help from Toromont cAT power Systems. “ The city of hamilton set ambitious objectives for the glanbrook landfill. we were eager to accept the challenge and to leverage our experience in similar landfill gas-to-energy projects.” Joe VanSchaick, Toromont CAT Power Systems EPG Market Manager, Concord, Ontario November 2006, hired Toromont to provide a complete solution, including commissioning and ongoing operation. This was not Toromont’s first LGE plant: the Company gained significant experience in building and operating successful landfill gas-to-energy projects in Sarnia, Waterloo and Toronto over the past decade.
