Beginning in 2010, this independent school in St. catharines, Ontario will also be recognized for its ability to heat and air condition its new arena using ice. Extracting heat to make ice is a well-known engineering feat. Less well known is the ability to recover the heat extracted during the ice making process and re-use it, as Ridley is doing, to heat the dressing rooms, water for the showers, snow melting equipment and the floors of an adjacent field house at its new sports complex. All of this is made possible with ECO CHILL ® technology from CIMCO Refrigeration. What makes ECO CHILL special to Ridley and the many other private and municipally owned arenas that have installed it is that the technology significantly reduces heating (and cooling) costs by lowering electricity consumption. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are also reduced because utilization of the arena’s natural-gas burning furnaces is lower and the refrigerants used in ECO CHILL are non-ozone depleting. Exactly how does ECO CHILL work? In an old style ice rink, heat is extracted from the five-inch thick concrete pad that sits below the ice surface and then released outdoors using a heat exchanger. Heating and cooling for the seating areas and dressing rooms require additional HVAC systems powered by natural gas and electricity. In an ECO CHILL rink like Ridley’s, 100% of the heat and cold extracted from the ice rink are recovered, recycled or stored for future consumption. “Ice rinks are energy intensive,” says CIMCO’s Dave Sinclair, Branch Manager for the group that handled the Ridley project for CIMCO. “A traditional rink consumes 1.5 million kWh of electricity per year, so reducing this consumption by recycling heat and cold creates attractive cost savings. In Ridley’s case, the ECO CHILL system makes 80 tons of heat available, some of which is recycled for radiant flooring in the adjoining field house (site of its old ice rink that now serves as a vantage point for the new 450-seat area.) The rest is either stored until it’s needed or is used to heat dressing rooms, showers and common areas. ECO CHILL also provides some cooling for the dressing rooms, lobby and field house through CIMCO’s patented Ice Battery. The Ice Battery is a thermal storage device that is used to store heat but can also provide cooling. Economically and environmentally, it’s the way of the future for ice rinks.” Continued on next page.
