Educational/training events<br />

Training <strong>of</strong> 150 youth reporters aged 13 to 18 recruited from secondary schools and<br />

religious, sports or artistic associations, clubs, scouts federation.<br />

Distance learning through radio broadcasts aimed at children in preparatory schools in<br />

partnership with UNICEF.<br />

Activities by radio and television: religious education programmes.<br />

Opening <strong>of</strong> schools or centres <strong>for</strong> sports training: National sports academy, AJESAIA and<br />

Académie Ny Antsika, which organize school sports programmes <strong>for</strong> children and youth;<br />

National youth institute, which trains youth monitors and leaders; two sports training<br />

centres.<br />

Growth and development activities<br />

Establishment <strong>of</strong> youth councils at different levels:<br />

Community youth councils: 88 communities<br />

Regional youth councils: 8 regions<br />

National youth council: 1<br />

Establishment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Children’s Parliament, a joint initiative <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> National Assembly and<br />

UNICEF<br />

Granting <strong>of</strong> approvals to youth associations: 51 associations <strong>of</strong> nationwide scope, and 228<br />

local associations, <strong>of</strong> which 214 are secular and 14 are faith-based<br />

Artistic training at <strong>the</strong> National centre <strong>for</strong> teaching <strong>of</strong> music<br />

Development <strong>of</strong> local libraries: village libraries, CLIC and CLAC<br />

Creation <strong>of</strong> clubs within schools: journalism club, anti-AIDS club, environmental club,<br />

science club, artistic and cultural club, UN, UNESCO clubs<br />

Organization <strong>of</strong> science fairs, book weeks, open house days, exhibitions<br />

Study and discovery trips, vacation camps, exchange student programmes, outdoor classes.<br />

Leisure and sports <strong>for</strong> persons living with a disability<br />

Specialized associations and centres are seeking to promote sports among disabled persons,<br />

particularly among disabled children. Sports competitions are <strong>of</strong>ten organized both to<br />

encourage self-esteem in <strong>the</strong> disabled child by giving him an opportunity <strong>for</strong> self-fulfilment<br />

and to give <strong>the</strong> public and <strong>the</strong> population a chance to see disabled persons in a different<br />

light.<br />

Handisport, a very active sports federation, is approved by <strong>the</strong> Ministry <strong>of</strong> youth and sports.<br />

Handisport brings toge<strong>the</strong>r several sports, including wheelchair basketball, athletics <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

blind or visually impaired, pétanque, torball, etc. At <strong>the</strong> 2007 Indian Ocean Games, which<br />

took place in Madagascar, Malagasy disabled persons won several medals.<br />
