Principals are the guardians
of our schools. They are the gatekeepers;
they are the chiefs of
staff. In recognition of these educational
leaders, Texas Gov. Rick
Perry has proclaimed the month
of October as Principals Month.
The Texas Elementary Principals
and Supervisors Association and
Texas Association of Secondary
School Principals have also joined
Gov. Perry in declaring October as
National Principals Month, and
Krum ISD Superintendent Mike
Davis says the district’s top administrators
are worthy of the recognition.
“Our principals and assistant
principals are what keep the district
moving in a forward direction,”
said Davis. “Their constant
efforts to better their campuses
and guide the paths for our young
people ensure that the future of
Krum, along with our great state
and nation, will be filled with successful,
well-educated citizens.”
for the academic success of
our students, principals are also
counseling of our teachers, the administration
The first-ever district game for Krum High School varsity football is
set for this Friday, Oct. 13 at Krum High School’s Bobcat Stadium vs.
Bridgeport. The game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Rumor has it that Bridgeport
is bringing a big fan following, so everyone come out and support
your Bobcats! Above, quarterback Caz Wojciak (5) carries the ball,
flanked by teammate Zack Hughes (11), during Krum’s 64-0 win last
Friday over Burkburnett, bringing Krum’s season record to 6-0. See
KISD celebrates Principals
Month in October
full of staff, and for building important
relationships with parents.
Krum ISD continues to grow
and with that growth comes an increase
in expectations in our campus
leaders. As the district works
to serve almost 1900 students, the
heads of the district’s five different
campuses make sure that each
student is cared for based on their
individual needs.
Gov. Perry’s proclamation encourages
all Texans to recognize
the important role principals play
in ensuring that every child has
access to a high-quality education.
In Krum ISD, our principals have
made that a reality.
Krum ISD recognizes the following
principals:
Hattie Dyer Elementary
School – Russell Black, principal
Blanche Dodd Intermediate
School – Lila Wright, principal
Krum Middle School – Michelle
HEART TO HEART
By Bro. Ed Gatlin,
Pastor,
First Baptist Church
of Krum
REST FOR THE WEARY
In Jesus’ day, much
like today, religion placed
burdens on its followers.
Religion always has been
a curse. Religious ritual
makes impossible demands
in return for broken promises
and empty lives. Jesus
reserved His most scathing
rebukes for religious leaders
who placed burdens of ritual
keeping on the people.
Their religion did nothing
for them. It showed them
where they fell short but offered
them no relief for their
condition. Rebuke without
possibility of relief creates a
paralyzing frustration.
Jesus spoke to that frustration
in Matthew 11:28-30.
“Come to me, all you who
are weary and burdened,
and I will give you rest. Take
my yoke upon you and learn
from me, for I am gentle and
humble in heart and you
will find rest for your souls.
For my yoke is easy and my
burden is light.”
Jesus said to the people,
“I know you are tired of
being judged, berated and
reminded of your failures.
I know about your burden
of rules and regulations that
you can never quite master.”
“I will give you rest.”
As for as the people
were concerned, Jesus was
just another religious leader
who had His own set of
rules to demand they obey.
Jesus’ following statements
opened up a whole world of
possibilities for these people.
He was not offering more
rules and regulations. He
was offering a relationship
with Himself and rest from
the ritual. Being yoked together
with Him was quite
an invitation. He is gentle
and humble, not hard and
demanding.
Being yoked together
with Jesus is a picture of
being in a unique relationship
with Him. Whatever
He wants you to do, He will
supply the power to see that
it gets done. He lightens the
burden.
So, if your experience
with religion is more of
a burden than a delight I
invite you to enter into a
load-lightening encounter
with Jesus.
A PASTOR’S THOUGHTS
By The Rev.
Dr. Christy Thomas,
Krum United
Methodist Church
TO HEAL OR NOT TO HEAL:
THAT IS THE QUESTION
A man sits in a house
of worship, struggling with
despair, staring at his useless
hand. He couldn’t harness
an ox, hold a plow, slaughter
an animal, or build a shelter.
Total ruin for his family
loomed. He’d beg, but his
wife and children would be
sold into slavery.
Others entered into the
worship space, with them
a teacher, Jesus. He stood
before the despairing man.
“Stand up. Let us see you.”
He rose reluctantly,
expecting to be shamed.
Slowly, other conversation
ceased.
Jesus looked at the
man’s hand, then asked this
question to those gathered
on that day to worship and
honor the Lord God, “What
kind of action suits the Sabbath
best? Doing good or
doing evil? Helping people
or leaving them helpless?”
No one answered; their
religious teachers having
stated clearly that no work
must be done this day. The
teachers themselves hoped
this pest called Jesus would
overstep his bounds so they
could pounce upon him and
declare him evil, boosting
their own reputations and
power.
“Hold out your hand.”
The despairing man
reached with his good hand
to lift the worthless one.
What had been cold and
lifeless grew strong and
warm. In silence, he raised
it high for all to see.
940-382-6622
MULKEY-MASON
FUNERAL HOME
Jack Schmitz & Son
“You see!” said one of
the teachers. “We told you –
this Jesus is evil. Its against
the Law to heal on the Day
of Rest.” They started making
plans to silence Jesus.
Now, this story comes
from the Gospel of Mark,
chapter 3. We find it easy
to condemn those teachers
for lack of sympathy to the
ill and infirm. But, why did
Jesus feel the need to antagonize
them? Surely he could
have waited a day.
Assuming that urgency
was not the driving issue,
what would it have hurt Jesus
to cut the teachers some
slack and concede that they
had a legitimate point about
his Day of Rest activities?
He could have gained favor
with that attitude and very
likely have bought more
time for ministry – and even
more healings. So, what’s
the big deal?
It may be this: This story
illustrates Jesus’s reversal
of one of the greatest and
most destructive of human
weaknesses: to refrain from
doing good, relieving suffering
and opposing evil when
faced with powerful opposition
that could harm us in
return.
Several years ago, a
book called The Help made
the bestseller lists. Many
wondered whether a while
woman, Kathryn Stockett,
even had the right to
write this book, which told
the painful stories of black
maids who served white
households and raised white
babies in the Deep South.
Even so, the book was
made into a movie that
was quite highly rated, and
which did a pretty good job
of following the original
story line. The main white
character, “Skeeter” Phelan,
a young woman of considerable
privilege, found herself
in deep sympathy with
the those maids.
In time, she earned the
trust of some of these women
and put together a book
of their stories. The greater
Red Curtis
red@curtismotorcompany.com
her sympathies grew, the
more opposition she faced
from her contemporaries.
When the book was published,
(even with the author
given as “anonymous” in
order to protect the women
who had spoken out),
“Skeeter” became a pariah
in her town, with only a
few sticking by her side. She
paid dearly for seeking healing
and justice.
It’s a good story – and
Marie Butler, 73. of
Krum, TX passed away in
Denton on Friday, October
5, 2012. She was born
on September 16, 1939 in
Proctor, OK to Coley and
Indiana (Young) Ferguson.
Marie was married to
Coy Butler on February 20,
1957. She loved kids and
watched numerous babies
after her retirement from
the Denton State School.
She was a loving housewife
and Grandmaw.
A visitation was held on
Monday, October 8, 2012
from 12-2pm at the Denton
Funeral Home. A funeral
service was held after the
visitation. Burial followed at
Jackson Cemetery in Krum.
Gary Sweatman officiated.
Rachel’s Challenge
makes the same point as did
Jesus in the Mark 3 story.
It costs to stand up to evil
and misused power. Those
who question the status
quo, especially a status quo
that protects the privileged
in some way, will nearly always
suffer afterward.
But it is what we are
asked to do if we want to
call ourselves children of
the Lord God. No one is exempt
from that call.
Survivors include her
husband, Coy Butler of
Krum; daughter, Phyllis and
husband, Donald Newman
of Krum; brothers, Jay Ferguson
Exasperated sigh
escapes my lips
as I sit to write
That really happened.
It’s not an exaggeration.
There are far more topics
the Krumudgeon would
prefer not to tackle at this
week’s sitting than there are
topics he would enjoy writing
about. The trouble is, there’s
nothing new to say about the
enjoyable topics, and the exasperating
ones are merely
negative extensions of what
your scribe has written too often
before.
Tuesday’s mail brought
fairest comparative picture of
This doesn’t mean I believe
“The Economist” is always
does mean that I believe the
THE KRUMUDGEON
sides of an argument — without
succumbing to popular
political fiction produced by
both presidential candidates’
camps — that either side
can make a more intelligent
choice than they can by swallowing
whole what Fox News
or MSNBC say.
The centerpiece of this
week’s “The Economist” is
defined in the banner across
the top as “A 20-page briefing
on the issues shaping America’s
election.” At this sitting,
with the Krum News deadline
looming, I have not yet
read the full 20 page article,
but I am certain, based upon
past experience, that I’ll read
many conclusions with which
I agree and a few with which
I disagree.
I have taken the time to
read the first two-page essay,
headlined “Overview – The
choice” and the last one-page
review, headlined “Conclusion
– Four more weeks.”
I’ll purloin the last two
paragraphs from the twopage
introduction and the last
paragraph from the one-page
synopsis that do a pretty good
job of summing up what
I have, with great sadness,
thought about this year’s election
campaign.
Purloin No. 1 — “The
usual torrent of abusive ads
helps stoke public misgivings
about the candidates. More
money will be spent on this
election than on any previous
one —and that’s not counting
the flood of ‘independent
expenditures’ not formally
linked to either party or candidate,
but nonetheless intended
to influence the race.
Almost all this advertising,
needless to say, is negative.
“Where previously
there was hope and change,
in short, there is now fear
and loathing. The distortion
and name-calling will intensify
over the next month.
Meanwhile, only the three
(remaining) debates hold out
any prospect of changing the
course of the race. The victor
will have much to overcome
— including the depressing
process of his selection.”
Before adding the last
paragraph among 13 essays
over 20 pages of analysis by
“The Economist,” let me
turn to another weekly news
magazine’s effort to assess
the work of the fact-checkers,
those in the media who
gather statements made by
each of the candidates and
compare them with what the
fact-checkers see as the truth.
It’s a cover story in the
Oct.15 “Time,” which came
in Saturday’s mail, touted on
the cover as “Who is telling
the truth? The Fact Wars.”
The inside cover of the five
page story written by Time
White House correspondent
Michael Scherer is headlined
“Blue Truth – Red Truth:
Both candidates say White
House hopefuls should talk
straight with voters. Here’s
why neither man is ready to
take his own advice.”
A paragraph in that story
pretty well sums up what
I have, with great sadness,
thought about the voting
public’s ability to separate
the wheat — a few grains of
truth — from the chaff, an avalanche
of exaggeration, obfuscation
and prevarication:
“So what explains the
factual recklessness of the
campaign? The most obvious
answer can be found in the
penalties, or lack thereof, for
wandering astray. Voters just
show less and less interest in
punishing those who deceive.
The reasons may be found in
the political fracturing of the
nation. As some voters feel a
deeper affinity for one side or
another in political debates,
they have developed a tendency
to forgive the home team’s
fibs. No matter their ideology,
many voters increasingly inhabit
information bubbles in
which they are less likely to
hear their world-view contradicted.”
Dare I mention again
the political consultants who
tell the candidates and the
media consultants who tell
TV newsrooms and newspaper
publishers that voters
show less and less interest
in detailed explanations of
complicated issues and are
more and more moved by
seven-second soundbites and
three-paragraph stories.
Dare I further mention
that a sidebar in the Time story,
headlined “Who lies more?
Yet another close contest”,
written by Time Washington
correspondent Alex Altman,
contains this sentence: “The
lying game unfolds on many
levels. Campaigns obfuscate,
twist the truth and exaggerate.
They exploit complexity.
Most of all, they look for details
— real or unreal — that
validate our suspicions.”
They know we human
beings are conspiracy theorists
at heart.
The fact-checking process
itself comes under partisan
attack. If a statement
you believe is called a lie by
a fact-checker, your stronger
tendency is to believe the
fact-checker is biased.
I’ve also noticed over the
years, as those who’ve read
these Krumudgeon columns
possibility have gathered, that
a comprehensive story that
fairly compares both (or several)
sides of an issue is alltoo-often
criticized by conservatives
as being biased toward
the liberal side and criticized
by liberals as being biased toward
the conservative side.
Back, now, to “The
Economist” for:
Purloin No. 2 — After
analyzing what might happen
if either candidate wins
on Nov. 6, essay continues,
“So the election boils down
to this: four years of probable
gridlock, but continuity,
under Mr. Obama, or the
possibility of some radical
changes under Mr. Romney.
The precise nature of those
changes is unclear, but they
will undoubtedly involve deep
and perhaps clumsy cuts to
cherished benefits and popular
government programmes,
as well as the hope (and it is
only that) of an improvement
in America’s precarious fiscal
position. No wonder opinion
has been so evenly divided.”
A common thread running
through both magazines’
stories is the complaint that,
while the candidates are
talking generally about their
overall goals, neither candidate
is revealing specifically
how he plans to reach those
goals. Being too specific carries
with it a double whammy.
First, the opponent can
cherry-pick one or two of the
steps proposed and claim that
the plan will lead to the exact
opposite of the proposed
goal, or, second, if the candidate
is elected and is so solidly
opposed by the Congress
that the goals are impossible
to reach, he can be accused of
lying to the voters.
A classic example of
this was a full-page, fineprint
newspaper ad in which
1972 Democratic presidential
nominee George McGovern
outlined, in extensive detail,
a complicated economic plan
that would have required
Congressional action on dozens,
if not hundreds, of specific
steps, all of which would
be required to make the plan
work. One of the steps was
to guarantee $10,000 annual
income for every family in
America, a proposal the GOP
effectively cherry-picked to
highlight in its opposition to
the challenger.
I have never been able
to figure out why Richard
Nixon, who had no reason
to believe that McGovern
had any chance of winning
that election, should have
supported, actively or tacitly,
the Watergate break-in to
find the Democrats’ secret
election strategy. McGovern,
like Barry Goldwater in 1964,
was a “throwaway” candidate
in elections that opposition
party regulars knew would
be won by the incumbent no
matter whom they nominated.
The above “exasperated
sigh” isn’t the first one that’s
escaped the Krumudgeon’s
lips over the many years I’ve
been following politics.
When I complain to
friends whose political beliefs
are different from mine about
the status of American political
oratory, I get, basically,
the response that it’s always
been that way, it always will
be that way, so what’s the use
of trying to correct it?
Historically, that response
is accurate. As Scherer
puts it in his “Time” story:
“The rules for this backand-forth
were set in 1796.
In the nation’s first contested
presidential election, when
John Adams’ supporters
falsely charged Thomas Jefferson
with atheism and loyalty
to France while Jefferson’s
forces made up fables about
Adams’ monarchist ambitions.
In the centuries since,
campaigns have evolved into
elaborate games of cops and
robbers. Candidates and their
supporters bend, twist and
fabricate facts so much as
they can without sparking a
backlash. Reporters and opposing
politicians do their
best to run down the deceptions
for voters.”
But voters are human
beings, and human beings are
prone, the Krumudgeon has
concluded, to believe the first
thing they hear, even when
the first time they hear it is,
say, four years after it’s been
thoroughly examined and
proven false.
Ah, well.
The Krumudgeon invites,
encourages, even urges
readers who may think I’ve
done a little cherry-picking
myself today to read the entire
stories to which I’ve referred.
I don’t expect non-subscribers
to the two magazines
to rush over to Denton and
buy the issues in question but
they can find these articles on
Drumline/Front Ensemble participates in competition
On Saturday, September
22nd the Krum High
School Drumline and
Front Ensemble traveled to
Ron Poe Stadium located
at McKinney North High
School to participate in the
North Texas Drumline Clinic
and Competition.
The North Texas
Drumline Clinic and Contest
provided a unique opportunity
for high school
drumlines in the North Tex-
Krum Lions Club members,
during recent noonhour
meetings, heard from
a Lake Charles, La. Lions
Club member who coached
successful college and high
school baseball teams despite
losing both legs above
the knee in childhood, a
Denton County man who
survived a year and a half as
a POW in Nazi Germany to
become one of many pilots
to fly food and supplies into
Berlin as part of the Berlin
Airlift after World War II,
and a Krum resident who
turned down a St. Louis
Cardinals baseball contract
to ride bulls on the Professional
Rodeo Cowboys Association
circuit for many
years.
Coach David Vince
spoke at the Sept. 5 Lions
Club meeting at NorthStar
Bank, displaying his autobiography,
“When Life
Throws You Curves, Keep
Swinging,” that depicted
his coaching experience at
high schools in Louisiana
and Florida and in college
in Kentucky. A strong supporter
of Lions’ summer
camps for handicapped children,
which he attended as
a child, Vince told how his
daughter, Sierra, inherited
the birth defect that led to
her double amputation as
well.
LeRoy Williamson
brought many souvenirs of
his service to America to
the Lions Club meeting on
Sept. 19, and told of the
many cargo plane flights
American pilots made to
the American, French and
British sectors of Berlin after
the Soviet Union under
Josef Stalin cut off ground
transportation through East
Germany. Williamson and
other fellow pilots returned
to Berlin in 2008 to participate
in an anniversary celebration
of their postwar
heroism.
Krum resident Larry
Brady spoke at the Oct. 3
meeting, delivering a history
of the rodeo sport from
the early days of Texas bulldogger
Bill Pickett, who
neutralized steers by biting
their noses after leaping off
his horse and biting their
noses, through the legendary
exploits of such All-
Around Cowboys as Freckles
Brown, Jim Shoulders
and Larry Mahan to more
recent winners Ty Murray
of Stephenville and Trevor
Brazile of Decatur. Lions
were amazed that Brady
could laugh at the many injuries
hesuffered on the Pro-
as region to not only compete
against other highly
skilled drumlines but to also
present their show in a clinic
setting and receive feedback
on their performance. The
contest portion of the day
was judged by three of the
state’s top professionals in
the field of percussion: Dr.
Brian West of Texas Christian
University, Allen Joanis,
a singer/songwriter in the
Dallas/Fort Worth metrop-
lex, and Mr. Jim Yakas of
the University of Texas at
Arlington.
This contest was unique
because each drumline received
a half-hour clinic
from one of the judges before
the contest. Each group
was able to receive one-onone
feedback and constructive
criticism on their show.
The clinic allowed the students
an opportunity to
improve upon their musical
October event, website
designed to help women
monitor their health
We all know that women
tend to put themselves
last on the to-do list.
The average woman’s
to-do list could look something
like this: shuttle Mary
from soccer to piano, drop
Tommy off at swimming
lessons, juggle conference
calls between the grocery
store and cleaners, schedule
the orthodontist appointments
and health checkups,
straighten the house before
the mother-in-law arrives
and make a healthy dinner
and pack tomorrow’s lunch
for the kids.
With all that activity,
it can be really easy for a
woman to ignore her own
well-being.
That’s why Texas
Health Presbyterian Hospital
Denton is hosting “The
Multi-Tasking Woman.”
Dr. Anna Burke, an internal
medicine physician on
the medical staff at Texas
Health Denton, will speak
about breast health and
offer tips for how women
can regain control of their
health. The event is being
held in conjunction with
the Laura W. Bush Institute
for Women’s Health.
The seminar will be held
in the Rio Grande Room
at Texas Health Denton
Mon., Oct. 15 at 6 p.m.
If you can’t break away,
Texas Health has created online
resources as well. With
a few clicks of the mouse
at www.TexasHealth.org/
Women, busy women can
get a barometer of their
own health.
The site is divided into
age categories, so women
see only the tests and conditions
most appropriate
to their life stage. Many of
the quizzes, such as questions
about healthy eating
and thyroid function, take
less than two minutes with
the longest one, the overall
women’s health assessment,
easy to complete in
less than 10 minutes. The
site also includes a breast
cancer risk assessment tool.
And the results are easy to
print and take to your physician
to discuss any concerns
more in-depth.
“It’s so easy for women
to put their health needs
behind those of their families,”
said Dr. Burke. “But
because everyone is so dependent
on them, it’s even
more important to take the
time to care for your own
health and well-being. Texas
Health is excited to offer
tools that make taking care
of yourself easy to achieve.”
Varsity Lady
Cats Defeat
Pilot Point
The Lady Cats’ record
moves to 24-12 after losing
to Gainesville and then defeating
Pilot Point. Gainesville
won Friday’s match
with scores of 25-18, 25-23,
and 25-23. Kim Robinson
led the offensive attack with
8 kills and received help
from Justice Dominguez
who ended the game with 6
kills. Machala Noack led the
defense with 15 digs while
Ashleye Adkins, Robinson,
and Dominquez contributed
by putting up a great blocking
performance. The Lady
Cats travelled to Pilot Point
on Tuesday and defeated the
Lady Bearcats in a long 5 set
match with scores of 22-25,
25-23, 25-23, 20-25, and 15-
13. Again, Robinson led the
team with 16 kills, followed
by Jordan Crawford and
Adkins, who both finished
with 7 kills each.
The Lady Cats finished
the first round of district
play in fourth place with
a record of 1-3 and will be
fighting to reach their goal
of advancing to the post
season play. Bridgeport will
be travelling to Krum on
Friday to start the second
round of district play for the
Lady Cats.
“The girls fought really
hard to get the win against
Pilot Point. This was a great
match to gain some momentum
to lead us into the second
round of district play.
We have a big challenge in
front of us if we want to
have the chance to advance
into the post-season play.
We were in this exact same
situation last season and the
girls were able to step it up
and take care of business. I
have no doubt they can do
the same again. We will be
taking one game at a time as
we work hard to accomplish
the goals we have set,” Head
Coach Stacey Lucas said.
