Advisory Board Report
What is a Vice President? …
Someone like myself who is proud
and honoured to be a member of
the advisory board, and part of a
most significant force in this
community. The knowledge and
experience that we have
cumulatively gathered is most
important to a well functioning society.
As Vice President of this most worthwhile
organization I must take my hat off to the founding
members of MSAC. The more I learn about the
Milton Seniors’ Activity Centre and our members the
more I realize how being a member can change a
person both physically and mentally. Having a
purpose in life is most important, and I have certainly
found a purpose here with you!
With the baby boomers hitting our ranks we are the
fastest growing group of people in North America. Do
you know that the province of Ontario has one of the
highest levels of life expectancy in both Canada and
among the countries of the developed world?
Have a wonderful summer and please come out to
enjoy your choice of the many activities offered here
at MSAC.
Wishing you all the best of health, friendship and
good fortune.
Mission Statement
Diane Miller
Vice President MSAC
The Milton Seniors’ Activity Centre is a Town of
Milton facility whose purpose is to offer Older
Adults the opportunity to attain the highest
possible standard of life. In pursuit of this goal,
the Centre provides quality programs which
promote physical, mental, social
and emotional well-being.
Past President’s Role
Hello I'm glad to share some
highlights about my role as Past
President for the Advisory Board of
our Centre. First, I don't get to use
the gavel at meetings anymore!
On a serious note, the Past
President chairs the Board meeting
if President and Vice President are unable.
Also he/she chairs the nominating committee. The
Past president provides leadership assistance for the
Resolutions session at the Annual General Meeting.
I believe that the Past President should be willing to
assist the President and Board as requested,
because of recent experience serving as President.
There may be special projects needing help, or an
event where representation from the Board is
important. Many of our Past Presidents have
stepped in as advisors on an issue.
I recall how helpful Maisie MacKay was at our board
meetings as Past President because of her
knowledge about the Centre and Board process. The
Board requires continuity as well as new members.
Please feel free to ask any of us on the Board about
our roles. You may wish to ask to sit in at a meeting
to learn more. Maybe you'll decide to join the board
at some point!
Tish Butson
Past President
Welcome to all new and
returning members.
Our current membership is 856.

Many thanks go out to:
• The Song Spinners Chorus for the beautiful
entertainment and delicious goodies provided at
their concert. Thanks to Maisie MacKay and May
Johnson for their assistance with the
refreshments.
• The Lunch Counter Team for all of their hard
work over the past year preparing the
Wednesday hot lunches and numerous special
events – you’re one hard-working group of
volunteers!
• Diane Miller for organizing the Mystery Walk.
• Tish Butson, Judi Hanson, Maisie MacKay, Barb
Janzen and many volunteers for assisting with
the Centre’s “Seniors’ Month Celebration Event”
Thanks to you, it was a huge success!
• Tara Bonin and volunteers for their “attempt” to
promote the Centre at the Downtown Street
Festival. The Street Festival was hit by a severe
thunderstorm and high winds which caused the
event to be cancelled (we’re just glad everyone
was safe!)
• Jenny Panda, Wendy Schau and Diane Miller for
representing the Centre in the Grate Groan-up
Spelling Bee.
• Maisie MacKay for assisting the Line Dancers
with their Pot Luck Luncheon.
Take it Back Halton!
Recycle Household batteries here!
The Region of Halton has a battery
recycling program at the Centre.
Bring in your old batteries and place
them in the disposal unit in the
Cloak Room.

Attention Volunteers
Staff are currently developing a volunteer
database for the Centre. In order for staff to input
personal information (address, phone, etc.,) for
each volunteer at the Centre, we are hoping to use
the information we’ve already collected from your
membership application form.
Based on the fact that you were unaware at the
time of filling out your membership application
form that your information would be used for other
reasons, we are required to get your permission to
do so.
Therefore, we kindly ask that all volunteers drop
by the Reception Desk to sign a sheet stating that
the Town of Milton has your permission to use this
information for the volunteer database.
Should you have questions or concerns, please
contact Tammy Townsend, Coordinator,
The membership form will be changed to reflect
this in the near future.
Moonlight & Roses
The Song Spinners once again enchanted us with
a spring concert entitled Moonlight & Roses
singing some of our favourite show tunes. It really
is a “Wonderful World”!
Jim Hawkins was in good form offering up some
very funny lines. While spinning the tune “People
Will Say We’re in Love” there is a line “Don’t throw
bouquets at me” … Jim actually threw a bouquet
at Joyce.
The Fiddler on the Roof Medley was a hit, with the
men looking quite dapper in their Russian
costumes with sashes and hats.
The Male Chorus went through many costume
changes … posing next as stout hearted men
sporting bandages, casts and crutches.
Charlie Prior sang an old favourite called “O Sole
Mio” (My Sun) a well known Neapolitan song
written in 1898. The lyrics written by Giovanni
Capurro and the melody composed by Eduardo di
Capua. Mario Lanza recorded it in 1949. In 1960
Elvis recorded “It’s Now or Never”, the melody
was from O Sole Mio, the inspiration for the song
was from “There’s No Tomorrow”.
Graham Troake sang another long time favourite
titled “Moon River”. This song was composed by
Johnny Mercer (lyrics) and Henry Mancini (music)
in 1961, for whom it won that year’s Academy
Award for Best Original Song. It was originally
sung in the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s by Audrey
Hepburn. It later became the theme song for Andy
Williams.
Frank Waugh charmed us with “Roses of Picardy”
a wartime ballad written by lyricist Fredrick
Weatherly while he was an army officer in 1916,
set to the music by Haydn Wood, it was one of the
most famous songs of World War I.
6
The Spinettes had everyone smiling along with their
costumes and songs “The Water is Wide” and
“Second Hand Rose“.
Bouquets of roses to each and every Song
Spinner for lifting the hearts of so many.
The Grate Groan-Up Spelling Bee
MSAC was well represented at the "Grate Groan-Up
Spelling Bee" by Jenny Panda, Wendy Schau and
yours truly. Our team was sponsored by Birkdale
Seniors’ Residence which is being built on Derry
Road.
The spelling bee is organized and hosted by Literacy
North Halton, and buzzes every year in spring. This
year the dinner and show took place at Halton Hills
Place Banquet Hall. It was an evening filled with
laughter and excitement. The audience also had a
chance to play along, winning prizes for their
spelling. Jim Kenzie was the MC and Leslie Fitch,
CEO and Chief Librarian, judged the spelling.
If a word was correctly spelled she would smile and
tinkle a bell, if it was wrong she honked the oogle
horn, which from the look on her face was not a
pleasant task.
Thirteen teams of three competed, with first prize for
best costume going to the Milton Seniors’ Activity
Centre team. We also buzzed in as first runner up,
just "BEE"cause we can spell. We left the "Bee" with
trophies and gifts galore! We also received a thank
you framed certificate for our Centre.
Thank you to all who came out to support us!
Seniors’ Month Celebration Event
A record membership attendance celebrated June is
Seniors’ Month on Wednesday, June 15 th ,
beginning with words of welcome from Milton Mayor
Gordon Krantz.
A thought provoking address by Vicki Reid, of "Red
Coats Moving Solutions Inc.," on how to dispose of
our clutter was followed by the “Song Spinners” led
by Maestro Joyce Hayward. A nice lunch was
served by Maisie MacKay and her team of
volunteers. Special thanks to Martindale Gardens
Retirement Community for their generous financial
contribution towards the lunch.
Over coffee and dessert we heard a presentation by
Jeremy Bertrand from the Ministry of Revenue on
how to take advantage of tax credits and benefits for
seniors provided by the Provincial Government.
A new Milton transit service “Community Bus” was
explained by Tony D'Alessandro, Coordinator, Transit
who also had an information display in the foyer (see
page 12 for more information). The event was
sponsored by the Centre’s Advisory Board under the
leadership of Tish Buston. Centre Coordinator
Tammy Townsend introduced Sarah Louise
McGregor, the Centre’s new Program Assistant,
Staff News
Trying to stay cool this summer?
Visit the Centre. Check out our
listing of drop-in programs on page
17 of this newsletter or stop by the
Cafeteria - the coffee’s always hot
and the room is always cool!
I want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank our
members who go out of their way to welcome new
members to our Centre. For some people, it is often
very difficult to come into the Centre on their own,
especially when they do not know anyone. The warm
welcome you provide helps to make the new
member feel at ease and they are more likely to
return to the Centre based on their first experience.
The relationships formed through this Centre are so
wonderful to see develop and grow. Thank you for
helping make this Centre such a warm and inviting
place to be!
I hope you are pleased to see the flowerbeds have
been tidied and a few plants have been planted to
help fill in the empty gardens. As mention in
previous editions, work will need to be completed to
the front of the building to repair the water issues we
continue to experience. Therefore we do not want to
invest too much in the gardens and then tear them
out again.
We continue to experience issues regarding
clean-up and dishes in the Cafeteria. We kindly ask
that if you are using the dishes that you please wash
them and put them away. If you need training on
how to use the dishwasher, please speak to a staff
person or Maisie MacKay. Your assistance is
appreciated.
As you’re aware, Amanda St. John, Program
Assistant, is no longer with us but we have hired a
new staff person to replace her. Her name is Sarah
Louise McGregor (she goes by Sarah Louise) Sarah
Louise’s desk is located behind Lindsay McGinn’s.
Please drop by and introduce yourself. Read on for
more information regarding Sarah Louise.
8
I’m pleased to inform you that Jennifer McPetrie had
a baby boy, Brayden James, born May 5. We wish
Jen and her family all the happiness in the world.
Stay cool,
Tammy Townsend
Centre Coordinator
Hello Everyone!
My name is Sarah Louise McGregor and I am the
new Program Assistant for Adults and Seniors at the
Centre. Amanda St. John was the previous Program
Assistant and left me some very big shoes to fill,
which I will do my best to maintain!
Let me tell you a little bit about me: I was born and
raised on beautiful Lake Huron in the small town of
Goderich, Ontario. My passion for working with
older adults began at a very young age playing violin
to residents in retirement homes and seniors’ day
programs. To this day, I continue to volunteer my
spare time in such places, doing sing-alongs on
guitar and violin or stopping in for a cup of tea and a
chat.
I came to Oakville three years ago to attend
Sheridan College for the Social Service Worker –
Gerontology Diploma Program. After completing the
two-year program, I decided to continue my
education and take the Project Management
Post-Graduate Certificate Program. I have been
working as a Casual Recreation Support Worker at
Acclaim Health Alzheimers Seniors’ Day Program in
Oakville for the past year.
I look forward to meeting all of you and will do my
best to remember your names. Don’t feel too shy to
stick your head in to the office and look beyond
Lindsay’s desk to say hello! Keep smiling, laugh
often and have fun!
of the guitar club. Our club continues
to grow in size and enthusiasm. Just about
every style of guitar is embraced with folk,
country, older pop music, rock and jazz.
Playing ability is NOT a prerequisite, the
object is to get together and have fun making music.
We meet Thursday mornings at 10:00 am in the
library. Please drop in and bring your guitar or stop
by to sing a song or just listen.
Seniors’ Safe Driving Workshop Event
This workshop was well attended and is highly
recommended for all drivers. Constable Maureen
Andrew offered suggestions about driving and a quiz
to test our knowledge. Do you know that as we age
our depth perception diminishes?
A Ministry of Transport advisor suggested that
everyone can benefit by obtaining a recent ‘Driver’s
Handbook’ for $14.95 at the license bureau,
bookstores, Canadian Tire, CAA or on line at
www.ontario.ca/transportation.
Zak from ‘Zak’s’ Pharmacy on Main Street came by
to tell us how seemingly safe medications and over
the counter drugs can adversely affect us and our
reaction time when driving.
Shelley Harmer from ‘DRIVEWISE’ in Milton offered
us tips and a driving simulator where we were able
to sit behind the wheel and test our driving. Anyone
is welcome at the classroom located at 550 Ontario
Street South, Suite #206 in Milton. Check it out at
www.drivewisemilton.com or call 905-875-0480.
‘Wheels Driver Education’ certified instructor Keith
Black offered excellent suggestions and tips on
driving, what to expect if you have to be retested,
how to set car mirrors, and things to check before
driving your car. Keith can be reached at
519-856-4898 or 905-878-4135. He can prepare you
for any required testing.
Do you know that if you are over 70 years of age and
are at fault in an accident with damages over $1,000
you will have to be retested?
This program was made possible for FREE, through
the contributions and efforts of North Halton Injury
Prevention, Wheels Driving School, DriveWise
Milton, Ministry of Transport, Milton Seniors’ Activity
Centre and Halton Regional Police.
Mystery Walk & Tour
Twenty people attended the Mystery Walk & Tour.
The weather was perfect for our walk to the secret
destination, which was the Centre for the Arts and
Main Library.
We were greeted by none other than the “Chief”
himself, Rob Mackay who graciously escorted us
through the soon to be completed 500 seat theatre,
the 200 seat theatre, art gallery, art study rooms and
board room. He answered many questions regarding
programming, sponsorship, ticket pricing, availability,
rentals and some already scheduled performances
and a movie festival. Be sure to watch the
newspaper for more information. The box office
opens in August.
Afterward, Leslie Fitch greeted us with lemonade
and a place to rest in the Fireside Lounge before
embarking on a tour of the new Main Library.
The library opened on June 7 th with 2300 people
flooding through. Every area at the library is being
used every minute of the day. The library staff have
done a splendid job!
We can be very proud of our Centre for the Arts. The
Centre’s four pillars will be literary, media, performing
and visual arts.
The Centre for the Arts will definitely make a
difference in our community ... because “life is
reflected and changed through the arts.”
Improving Your Quality of Life
Hear More
Hearing loss is the 3rd most prevalent
chronic disability among older adults and
is superceded only by arthritis and
hypertension. There have been great
advancements in hearing aid technology
and statistics show that 80% of clients
are satisfied with their hearing aids when
appropriately counseled.
It is critical to identify and treat speech,
language and hearing disorders as early
as possible as these impact social,
emotional and cognitive development.
