President’s Report
Happy New Year to all of our
members from your Advisory Board!
We hope you enjoyed the recent
holiday season. It can be a busy and
stressful time for some but January
provides us with a slower period
where we can reflect on year past
and think about our hopes and
dreams for the coming year.
Looking back at our Centre in 2010 ,there were
some exciting new events such as the Victorian Tea
and Newfie Dinner.Thoughout the year we enjoyed
many good luncheons and barbecues. Many thanks
to all the volunteers who worked on these events.
Trips and Tours offered variety such as the Autumn
Boat Cruise, Penetang Buffet and Theatre trip,
Casino visits, Toronto tour and St. Jacobs Peter Pan
Play and Lunch.
The “Song Spinners” entertained us through the year
finishing the season with their Christmas Concert
which was attended by over 160 people.
The Centre increased membership from 752 in
September 2009 to 799 in September 2010.
Membership has also increased from 754 January
10 to 834 December 10.
Have you made any New Year’s Resolutions?
For our Centre we should resolve to :
• Encourage others to join us, become members
• Help new members feel at home
• Welcome newcomers from other cultural back
grounds
• Volunteer at the Centre -on committees, for events,
for fundraising activities, on the Board, other Centre
functions etc. Find your fit!
We look forward to an interesting year ahead as the
new Arts Centre opens and the Town continues to
grow. Did you know that our Centre through the
Advisory Board is making a donation to the Arts
Centre on behalf of members? Many older adults as
well as people of all ages will benefit from the Arts
Centre.
3
In 2011 your Board will continue to involve members
in reviewing our Centre’s programs and space. This
process will help us prepare for future developments
that may affect our Centre. We’ll do our best to keep
you informed. Stay tuned!
Best Wishes for 2011,
Tish Butson
Advisory Board President
Dawn and Dave Franklin enjoying themselves at the
Centre’s Christmas Luncheon.
Many thanks go out to
• Fran Pearce, Barb Jones and ?? for making our
Centre so beautiful this holiday season.
• The many volunteers who assisted with the
Newfie Dinner and Christmas Dinner events.
• The Telephone Committee for making numerous
telephone calls to remind members about Centre
events. Your time is appreciated.
• Barb Lacey, Susan Platt and Tish Bustson for
thier hard work cleaning out storage space in the
Centre.
• Those who annonomously donate items to our
Centre.

Milton Seniors’ Activity Centre Contest - “Quote that Seat”!
The Milton Seniors Activity Centre, Advisory Board, on behalf of our membership, have purchased 10 seats
as a legacy to honour our Centre and its members. In recognition of our donation, the Centre will receive a
plaque on the donor’s wall as well; each seat will include a name plate. Five of these seats will have the
name Milton Seniors' Activity Centre on them. The other five (every other seat) will have original quotes submitted
by our membership. We are looking to you the membership, to help us come up with the quotes for
the seats. We would like the quotes to somehow “connect” with seniors and “the arts” for example; "Aging
Wisely is an Art”.
Using the boxes below, the quote must be no more than 25 letters, or less, in length. Each space also counts
as a letter.
Please drop-off your submission to Tammy Townsend, Centre Coordinator for consideration by the Advisory
Board, staff and the Town of Milton no later than…Friday, January 21, 2011. Only those selected will be
notified. Thank you and good luck!
Staff News
It’s hard to believe it’s already 2011! I guess it’s
true - time flies when you’re having fun!
2011 is going to be an exciting year at the Centre.
There are many wonderful events scheduled that I
hope you will try to attend. Tickets for events sellout
fast – so plan to get yours early!
On March 3, 2011 the Centre will be hosting an
“Active Living Fair for Seniors” at the Milton
Leisure Centre. The Centre received a grant to
host the fair through the Older Adults Centers’
Association of Ontario (OACAO) and the Ministry
of Health Promotion to increase awareness of the
benefits and necessity of illness prevention and to
provide information on lifestyles options that can
enhance independence, general well-being and
quality of life. I am currently looking for individuals
to assist with this event. If you are interested,
please email me (tammy.townsend@milton.ca)
give me a call, 905-878-7252 ex. 2753 or drop-by
my office. This is going to be a great event and a
lot of fun. I look forward to hearing from you.
A friendly reminder, only those with an accessible
sticker are to park in the accessible parking
spaces outside of the Centre. We do realize that
sometimes people forget to display them, but we
also must ensure that these spaces are available
to those who need them.
There are some friendly new faces on the
Reception Desk these days. These additional
staff have been hired on to work alongside our
reception volunteers and provide much needed
support to staff. In no way are these staff taking
the place of our reception volunteers. There assistance
will allow for lunch coverage and ease the
workload of existing staff to allow them to focus on
new projects and increase interaction with the
membership. Please drop-by the reception desk
6
and introduce yourself!
Remember, this is your Centre, should you have any
suggestions for programs, workshops, guest
speakers etc., please do not hesitate to let a board
member or staff member know.
On behalf of staff, we wish you all the best for 2011!
Newfie Dinner
There was a mad rush for Newfie Dinner tickets
and they were sold out in no time at all … ending
up with over 20 people on the wait list! For those
of you who were not able to attend, we’re sorry.
Be sure to get your ticket early for our next big
event.
Plans began falling into place when Barb Jones
Fran Pearce and Madone Theriault put together a
Newfie Fisherman to sit out in the lobby. The fisherman
took on a sinister roll as people stumbled
onto him thinking he was real.
Maisie and the lunch counter team began
planning and then preparing the menu which
included, a Jiggs Dinner, consisting of corned
beef, cabbage, potatoes, carrots and turnip. The
desserts included Figgy Duff bread pudding with
sauce, pie, date squares and much more. Our
hard-working volutneers were there to help serve
and clean up the night of the event.
The day before the event, I received my medal of
honour when Maisie handed me a vegetable
peeler, knife and 50 lbs. of carrots to help her
peel. Then we went on to turnip, potatoes and
cabbage.
Amanda screeched when she dropped a bottle of
screech in the parking lot. It was to no avail that
she tried to catch it with her foot. Too bad she isn’t
a monkey, it may have worked.
Judi Hanson and Cathy Buchannan collected
tickets at the door and sold 50/50 tickets. Barb
Lacey and Marie Routledge sold drink tickets
while Jack White served up screech, wine and
beer at the bar. Did you know that the
consumption of alcohol may lead you to think
people are laughing WITH you? ...And it may even
cause you to think you can sing? ...And that you
can logically converse with others without spitting?
There should be warnings on liqour bottles.
Everyone that I called did not have to be
convinced to volunteer their services. It is a
pleasure to work with such a willing and giving
7
group of people. Oops, I had better include my
husband Jim in that, he does go along with almost
everything I ask of him.
The Government of Newfoundland and the
Newfoundland Travel Bureau kindly mailed us
posters and brochures to decorate the hall. Staff
made the placemats which included Ode to
Newfoundland, and a recipe for the boiled dinner
along with a map and pictures of Newfoundland.
Laura Good and Pearl ?? 2 of teh many volunteers who
helped make the event such a great success!
We had many gifts donated for door prizes. An
Electric Juicer, Crystal Bowl, Haircut, Glass Tic Tac
Toe Set, Move More Milton T-Shirts, Walking Chart
and Pedometers, CD’s, Books, a Christmas Tree, A
Chocolate Basket. 1st Class Homecare was also
giving away aprons and a free one hour of service to
our guests. Staff were able to secure donations to
offset the cost of the entertainer Tom Leadbeater.
Those involved with preparations, and those who
came as guests truly enjoyed an evening of laughter,
food, fun, and excellent entertainment.
Newfoundlanders enjoy a rich culture all of their own.
They are musical, joyful, and enjoy joking about
themselves as much as others do. In fact, I have a
sneaking suspicion that many of the best ‘Newfie’
jokes were actually made up by them.
Computer Club members in
November, it has been determined
that many of you are concerned
about viruses, phishing, spam and
general interference with your computers. So, in
January, we have invited Chris from Crave
Computers in Milton to be our guest speaker. Chris
will address your concerns and talk about how to
keep your computer clean.
It is important that you ask questions, in order to
understand those things that cause you a major
headache, not to mention $$$$$.
So please come out to our meeting on Friday,
January 21, 2011 from 1:00 – 3:00 pm and start the
New Year with a clean slate. For the Friday,
February 18 meeting from 1:00 – 3:00 pm we will tell
you how to save money, time and frustration by
shopping online. Learn how to get some real
bargains. Useful websites will be shared and also
safety tips in shopping on the internet will be
discussed. Everyone is welcome.
The fee to attend the monthly meeting is $3 for
MSAC members and $5 for non-members – paid at
reception. Cyber Cafe on Monday and Friday 1:00 –
3:00 pm. Everyone is welcome to drop in at Cyber
Cafe to get one-on-one computer help on any computer
topic. Experienced volunteers are
available Monday and Friday from 1:00 – 3:00 pm.
The drop-in fee is $2/$4.25 for non-members for
Milton Seniors’ Activity Centre members, paid at
reception. The club has 10 computers with different
operating systems – XP, Vista and Windows 7. You
can also bring your portable computer. Although we
are a computer club, we also offer assistance and
advice on digital photography.
Learn something new this winter.....
The computer club offers courses both for the
beginner and more advanced computer user. Even if
you don't have a computer we can help you to learn
about new technology. The Photo Editing course
10
using Picasa and the new CD/DVD course are both
very popular. If you would like to take a course or
get one-on-one computer help outside the Cyber
Cafe hours, contact Judy Daniel at 905-693-0035.
Courses are usually 4-6 hours in length for 1 to 1 ½
hours each session at a convenient time for both the
volunteer instructor and student(s). The fee is $20
per course. If there is something you would like to
learn that is not on our course list, we would gladly
look into providing a special session. For the current
list of computer courses and a general outline of
Thursdays, 2:30 pm, $3.50
OSGA convenors will have racquets and balls
available and will be explaining the instructions of
Pickle Ball. Eight players will be allowed to play at
either one of our two courts. Please wear loose
fitting clothes such as track pants or shorts, a t-shirt
and running shoes that do not scuff, and make sure
Pickle Ball is a fun and invigorating sport that was
first played on Bainbridge Island, off the coast of
Seattle, Washington in 1965. The game is similar to
tennis and badminton, with the main difference being
that the serve is underhand and the ball always
played lower than tennis.
The inventors, Washington Congressman Joel
Pritchard and his friend Bill Bell christened this game
Pickle ball because the family dog would always
chase the balls while the game was in play.
There are many beautiful aspects to winter…
being unable to visit friends
isn’t one of them.
Winters can be especially hard on even the most independent and active senior.
If you have promised yourself that you are not going to let this coming winter get
the better of you, then plan to visit your local Amica retirement community soon.
See for yourself that what we offer is more than relief from the weather, it’s a
lifestyle that lets you enjoy every season with the independence and convenience
of everything you need just steps outside your private suite.
