16 College Degree Programs Physical Therapist Assistant 1. The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program at the Cape Girardeau Career and Technology Center is a 12 month technical program leading to an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Physical Therapist Assistant through articulation with Mineral Area College. Upon successful completion of this program, students may sit for a national board exam and pursue licensure in the state of their choosing 2. Students are required to complete four general education courses (Math, English, Biology, and Medical Terminology / Introduction to Pathology) prior to admission to the Physical Therapist Assistant Program. The PTA Program starts a new class in the fall semester each year. The four required courses should be completed in the preceding spring semester. 3. In all, students complete 24 - 26 credit hours of general education courses in addition to the PTA technical courses in order to satisfy the Associate Degree course work requirements. 4. Students are encouraged to complete all 24 - 26 credit hours of general education prior to the start of their PTA technical courses… however, only 12 credit hours (the four courses discussed above) are required for admission. 5. Students may complete the general education requirements by completing courses offered at the Cape Girardeau Career and Technology Center, being offered by Southeast Missouri State University and Mineral Area College. Students may also complete the general education requirements by completing courses at Southeast Missouri State University, Mineral Area College, Three Rivers Community College, or at other colleges (or by taking equivalent web based courses through these institutions). Physical Therapist Assistant 2-year A.A.S Degree Physical Therapist Assistants (PTAs) treat patients under the direction of a Physical Therapist. PTAs use therapeutic modalities such as exercise, joint and soft tissue mobilization, endurance training, neuromuscular re-education, and therapeutic application of heat, cold, ultrasound and electrical stimulation to assist patients to move and perform functional activities with the greatest amount of independence possible. Work as a PTA might also include teaching patients how to use orthotics, crutches, canes, walkers or other devices to increase independence. Physical Therapist Assistants are employed by hospitals, schools, skilled nursing facilities, outpatient clinics, and home care agencies. Core PTA courses are 12 months, beginning in the fall semester each year, with classes Monday through Friday, from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm. Clinical rotations include 8-10 hour shifts.
