Cheakamus River Benthic Community Monitoring, Progress Report EXECUTIVE SUMMARY A project was started May 12, 2008 to monitor periphyton, benthic invertebrates, and associated habitat attributes in the Cheakamus River during each of 4 seasons over the period of 2008 - 2010. Objectives are to increase sample size for a range of biological assemblages and habitat attributes for which measurements were started in past projects. The updated data will contribute to a model used to examine effects of variation in flow on various indices of river condition. These objectives meet the Terms of Reference for water monitoring that is required as part of the water license issued to BC Hydro for power production on the Cheakamus River (BC Hydro 2007). The area of interest includes the main channel of the Cheakamus River extending from the Daisy Dam downstream to the confluence with the Squamish River. Field and laboratory methods follow those from similar Cheakamus River projects in 1996, 2000, and 2005. The new data will be used to: 1. Simplify and improve an existing model for use in determining the importance of flow on biological assemblages that indicate health of the river. New data will contribute to this process by increasing sample size for statistical analysis. 2. Compare biological assemblages among sampling periods in different reaches before and after change in flow regime at Daisy Dam. 3. Identify habitat attributes that best explain biological assemblages or values of benthic invertebrate endpoints in the Cheakamus River. 4. Determine the importance of flow and flow - related variables relative to other habitat attributes in determining biological assemblages in the Cheakamus River. 5. Determine the importance of benthic organisms that are produced in the Cheakamus River as food for fish rearing in the river. Progress to date is summarized in the following table. Task numbers and task descriptions in the table are the same as those listed in the contract between BC Hydro and Limnotek (contract number 00034983 dated July 4, 2008).
