NEWS Douglas Bailey joins Stuncroft Douglas Bailey has been appointed managing director of Clubclass corporatewear division and Stuncroft Personal Tailoring. Doug had previously spent 19 years as Brook Taverner’s director of corporatewear but decided to leave in November last year to pursue new challenges. “After 11 brochures and thousands of meetings discussing the Brook Taverner business, the time had come for me to try something new,” he says. “I have only good memories of my time at Brook Taverner and wish them the very best for the future.” After considering a number of offers, Doug decided to accept a position with Stuncroft. “It’s a terrific opportunity to take a relatively small, well funded company with a brilliant team of people in place and help it to realise its undoubted potential. I’m really excited about News the quality of tailoring that Stuncroft is capable of in the group’s factory in Romania.” Starting life in the made-to-measure department of Hepworth Menswear in the early 80s, Doug moved on to become a manager of a large Next store. He helped to revolutionise the demand for stock supported corporate tailoring with the ‘wardrobes’ business collection, and has spoken at seminars and written articles on all aspects of corporate clothing. Doug is confident that he can help Clubclass grow over the next three years. “The business is very strong and has the heritage to manufacture first class tailored clothing for men and women. DNA Protects Yorkshire Wool Applied DNA Sciences Inc. (APDN), a provider of DNA-based security solutions, has completed the successful application of SigNature DNA at every stage of the woollen textile manufacturing process in Yorkshire. This first phase of the ‘DNA in Textiles’ project was fully funded by Yorkshire Forward in collaboration with the Textile Centre of Excellence and its consortium of companies. Applied DNA is embarking on the next phase of the wool protection programme, a multimillion pound commercialisation programme that will likely include second-phase funding from Yorkshire Forward. Bill Macbeth, managing director, Textile Centre of Excellence, said: “We see the importance and relevance of using DNA to safeguard our brands and our industry here in Yorkshire. We need to protect the quality and reputation of the textiles and apparel we make. We manufacture the best woollen cloth in the world and DNA can be effective in helping us to combat the rising tide of counterfeit goods.” Applied DNA demonstrated the ease of application of SigNature DNA to wool at each stage and proved its ability to withstand different textile manufacturing processes, including dyeing, scouring, washing and dry cleaning. Silver Sensation Sanitized AG is launching a distinct new product - Sanitized Silver is an antimicrobial finish that can be applied without a binder, not only during the exhaust process but now also during the padding process. “This is good news for textile manufacturers because delicate and stretchable fabrics can now be protected against bacteria and odour by using Sanitized Silver,” Darrell Burnette, the company’s new business development manager for North America, says. Developed and produced in Switzerland, Sanitized Silver is based on silver salt (not metallic silver), which is scientifically recognised as having natural antimicrobial properties. As a result, when applied as a finish to fabric, Sanitized Silver acts on the bacterial cell membranes, which prevents their growth and hinders the reproduction of the bacteria responsible for the development of unpleasant odours, offering optimal freshness and comfort. Sanitized Silver also carries bluesign approval and the Oeko-Tex 100 registration (class IIV). Sustainable Clothing Action Plan A new action plan to make fashion more sustainable and less environmentally damaging was launched at the start of London Fashion Week by Defra Minister Lord Hunt. The Sustainable Clothing Roadmap brought together over 300 organisations, from high street retailers to designers and textile manufacturers, to battle the environmental impacts of ‘throwaway fashion’. Companies including wholesale blank apparel brand Continental Clothing, Marks & Spencer, Tesco and Sainsbury’s signed up to take actions to make a significant difference to the environmental footprint and social inequalities that blight some of the production and retail processes of consumer fashion. According to Defra, the clothing and textiles sector in the UK alone produces around 3.1 million tonnes of CO2, two million tonnes of waste and 70 million tonnes of waste water per year - with 1.5 million tonnes of unwanted clothing ultimately ending up in landfill. Action takers for the roadmap will be concentrating on improving environmental performance and improving traceability across the supply chain. Fattorini produces a winner Diary Dates 09 Experienced trophy maker Thomas Fattorini has spoken out about the huge challenge involved in manufacturing the awards for the inaugural Business Manager Awards at the Workwear and Corporate Clothing Show. The company’s Ian Ainsworth told director-e: “The awards have been designed and developed to be totally original and unique to the Workwear and Corporate Clothing Show. For a high profile presentation ceremony, the awards need to be impressive and prestigious-looking from a distance, and the combination of crystal-clear spheres, curves and crisp, sharp angles look stunning under directed light. The ‘wow factor’ is terrific.” The Business Manager Awards were set up to recognise the teamwork involved in producing a uniform. Ian says that this is reflected in the design of the awards. “The three spiralling supports represent the buying team, the supplier team and the manufacturing team all working in accord with each other towards a single purpose, and also the three categories of corporatewear, PPE and workwear. The perfect sphere securely held at the top represents the whole project successfully accomplished and, of course, the worldwide market.” The awards were a huge challenge to design and manufacture and Fattorini says that the design really pushed the envelope of what is technically possible. “It all comes down to a team of highlyskilled craftsmen developing suitable moulds - casting, cutting, polishing, curving and twisting each individual component by hand to ensure every part fitted and matched,” Ian says. “Everyone I know who has seen them has had the same reaction - absolutely fantastic workmanship.” High-profile trophies designed by Fattorini include the prestigious Lonsdale Belt boxing trophy and the awards for the annual TV Awards. This follows the success of the brand in over 200 DIY outlets across the UK.
