MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
LUIS CASTILLO
President of the
Argentine Rugby Union.
BIENVENIDOS
verdadera fiesta. Que empiece la función…!!!
WELCOME
Welcome to the 2012 Personal Rugby Championship!
As the Argentine Rugby Union Chairman, I am greatly honoured to be at the
opening of this historical event for the Argentine rugby, being the first time
the Pumas have ever participated in a yearly tournament of the outmost international
level.
I would like to thank every single person that made it possible, with their
work over so many years, to make this dream come true. In particular, I
would like to thank the Press, who has been chaperones of our Pumas along
the long path that lead them here. I am confident that the Media support
shall remain more than ever present in this tournament, of such great dimension.
Furthermore, I would like to thank the SANZAR for letting us be a part of
this. Being host to three of the best national teams in the world and having
the Pumas face their opponents with their people’s enthusiasm and support,
in different provinces in the country is an overwhelming happiness for the
Union as a whole and for all Rugby fans.
It is my wish for us all taking part in this outstanding event to stand for the
values transmitted by this sport and to feel it like a real celebration. Let the
play begin!
Horacio Agulla has had a great performance in the different National Teams. He made his debut in 2005, in the
Under 21 World Cup in Mendoza. Besides, he participated in the Sevens team and Argentina A team. He started
playing with the Pumas in December 2005 against Samoa (defeat 28-12), where he scored a try. After some great
performances, this powerful wing played his first World Cup, scoring a try in the well-remembered victory against
Ireland, in the historic 2007 RWC, where Argentina finished in third position. At the beginning of the 2007/08 sea-
son, Horacio left his beloved club, Hindu, and turned to gain experience in the French rugby. After a short participa-
tion in Dax, this fast wing played with Brive and then moved to Leicester Tigers, in England in 2010. Nowadays, he
plays in Bath. In RWC 2011, Horacio played the five matches disputed by Argentina, and was one of the figures.
Patricio Albacete made his debut in the Pumas in the South American Tournament in Montevideo (Uruguay) in
2003. Only after a couple of months, he had the privilege of being part of the Pumas team that won against France
in Buenos Aires that same year. Patricio, who played his third Rugby World Cup in New Zealand 2011, was also part
of the U19 as well as the U21 National Teams, being captain in both. His outstanding participation in those National
Teams gave him the possibility to join the Pumas squad. He was part of the Buenos Aires Province squad, where
he obtained two titles. In his country, he played at Manuel Belgrano club and afterwards travelled to France, where
he defended the colours of Colomiers, Pau and Toulouse, in which he is one of the stars. Albacete is one of most
experienced players in the Argentine team and one of its leaders on the field.
World Cup in Mendoza in 2005. That gave him the possibility to be taken into account for the major teams and con-
tinue his rugby career in France. This former Belgrano Athletic player can take the fly half or centre position. The
variety of options opened the doors at the Biarritz Olympique, team which enjoys his great feet skills and excellent
handling. Marcelo made his debut with the Pumas in 2007, when Italy was touring across Argentina. Unfortunately,
some injuries did not allow him to be taken into account by the national coaches, but then he was fully recovered
and played RWC 2011, in New Zealand, in which he was one of the key players.
Manuel Carizza was one of the players that had an outstanding performance in the 2005 Junior World Cup in
Mendoza. That performance gave him the chance to join the Pumas, and since his first appearance, he has always
been taken into account by the coaches. Manuel played for Biarritz Olympique and then he returned to his former
club, Jockey Club de Rosario. He is always a great option in the line-outs due to his height and good skills in air
balls. Manuel was part of the special training sessions for the 2007 Rugby World Cup, but unfortunately he was not
shortlisted for the final 30-men squad. In 2011, he played against French Barbarians and again showed his great
skills, which led him directly to New Zealand World Cup.
Agustín Creevy, a former outstanding flanker, has recently changed his position to that of hooker, where he has
easily adapted and is now one of the most important hookers in Argentina. He was part of the U19 and U21 National
teams, and Argentina A. Pumas’ coach, Santiago Phelan, was the one who encouraged him to make the change
of position from flanker to hooker, so he returned from Biarritz to San Luis club to make the change and proved
himself right. Agustín was able to show his skills in the French rugby: he played for Biarritz and then he returned
to Argentina, to his former club San Luis. Afterwards, he played for Clermont and last February signed a contract
with the French club Montpellier. Creevy won the Vodacom Cup with Pampas XV, in 2011, and that same year he
played his first World Cup, in New Zealand.
Julio Farías Cabello was a very promising player during his junior stage, when he was part of the different National
Teams, such as U19 and U21, and was very close to be in the list of selected players for the 1999 Rugby World Cup.
His great versatility allows him to play as second row as well as third row, a feature which offers more options to
the trainers at the moment of making decisions. Farías Cabello played his first match with the Pumas when he was
32 years old, only three months after joining the UAR High Performance Plan.
The player from Tucumán Rugby Club won the Vodacom Cup in 2011 with Pampas XV and played as well with that
team in Vodacom Cup 2012. In 2010, he joined the Pumas in their tour around Italy, Ireland and France, and one year
later he wore the Argentine jersey against the French Barbarians and South America Invitation.
Last year, this great player was part of The Pumas in the Rugby World Cup, in New Zealand, where he scored a try
against the All Blacks.
Juan Martín is the younger brother of Carlos Ignacio Fernández Lobbe, who played for the Pumas until 2008. Both
brothers played together for almost two seasons with the Sale Sharks. In June 2009, Juan Martín, or ‘Corcho’ as he
is called, joined the Toulon’s rows. The former Liceo Naval player has been a member of the Pumas Sevens squad
for three years. Philippe Saint-André, his rugby coach at Sale said: “Both in Argentina and France he is regarded as
one of the best prospects in the world of rugby. At the very moment when he started his contractual relation with
us, he was also getting offers from Toulouse, Biarritz and the Stade Francais”.
Juan Martín, who grew up in the club Liceo Naval in Buenos Aires, enjoyed a very good 2008/09 season with the
Sale Sharks, where he was appointed captain. Fernández Lobbe, who plays in Toulon, played his second RWC in
New Zealand, where he had a great performance, until he suffered an injury. Despite he wasn’t able to play, he
stayed at New Zealand with the team.
During the preparation for the Personal Rugby Championship, in Pensacola, Fernández Lobbe was named Pumas’
captain.
Lucas González Amorosino had a great performance in his original club, Pucará, and had a magnificent season
with the Pumas 7’s, reaching the finals at the Rugby World Cup in Dubai and obtaining the Cup in San Diego. During
the last seasons, he played at Leicester Tigers and in 2011 he signed with Montpellier for two years.
In 2010, he played the three games that Argentina played in June and other three games during the European tour.
In New Zealand 2011 he played his first Rugby World Cup, where he scored a very important try against Scotland,
which gave The Pumas the victory and helped to classify to quarters.
Lucas, who can play mainly as fullback or fly-half, is a very fast player that can make decisions on the spur of the
moment. Apart from this, he has a wonderful kick and his moves on the field may determine the game, just as he
demonstrated in New Zealand 2011.
Juan Martín Hernández was drafted into the Pumas’ squad for the tour of Italy and Ireland ten years ago after
graduating through the national age group teams. He originally played as a fly half but he also performed as a full
back, centre and wing. He made his debut with the Pumas against Paraguay in 2003, the year in which he scored
two RWC tries against Romania.
During the season 2006/2007, he was named Best Player of the French League, whereas in 2007 he was nominated
as the Best IRB Player, after the 2007 RWC France, where he ended third with the Pumas.
Baptized ‘Magician’ by the press, he can create a scoring opportunity from each situation.
Between 2007 and 2012, Juan Martin played only six matches with The Pumas, due to three injuries. Thus, he was
not able to play many test matches or participate in the 2011 RWC. Nowadays, he is fully recovered and ready to
show his magic once again.
Rodrigo Roncero is considered one of the best props in the entire rugby world. He played in the front row for Deportiva
Francesa and his versatility allowed him to play both as left side prop (his original position) and as hooker.
Roncero made his debut with the Pumas against Japan in 1998 and, since then, has participated several times
representing Argentina. After playing for Gloucester, “Roro” joined the rows of the Stade Francais, where he was
crowned champion during the season 2006/07.
This year, he played against Italy in June, and then he took a rest to get ready for the Personal Rugby Championship.
Roncero, with 49 test matches played and three RWCs, is one of the most experienced players in the squad.
Leonardo Senatore made a good start with the National Teams, but unfortunately suffered a serious injury in 2003
and was removed from the U19 team which got the third position in the Junior Rugby World Cup. Nowadays, he
has fully recovered from that misfortune and is rebuilding his path through the Argentine Teams. He was back on
the field for the Sevens and took part in the Pampas XV team that won the Vodacom Cup in 2010, in South Africa.
In 2011, he played the two games against the French Barbarians and the last match of the Pumas in Argentina
before RWC 2011. Senatore, who was born in Santa Fe, was formed as a player at club Gimnasia & Esgrima, in
Rosario. He was captain of the Jaguars team in the 2009 and 2010 tours, and last year he was part of the Pumas
squad in New Zealand 2011. This year, he won with Argentina the South American tournament, and then played
against Italy and France, in June.
Nicolás Vergallo first played with the Pumas in December 2005, in the test match against Samoa. After that first
experience, he became part of the preliminary squad for the 2007 RWC, though in the end he was not appointed
for the tournament. His opportunity came the following year, when he started achieving a strong position in the
National Team while playing all the 2008 matches under Santiago Phelan’s coaching. From his initial Jockey Club
in Rosario, Vergallo moved to his first professional rugby club, Dax. After that, he was part of the elite lines in Stade
Touloussian, where he is currently playing. In New Zealand 2011, he played his first Rugby World Cup, in which he
was a starter in all Pumas’ matches.
