mechanisms or structures to prevent a crash <strong>of</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> species provides an <strong>in</strong>vitation for anyone to engage <strong>in</strong><br />

what still rema<strong>in</strong>s a lucrative bus<strong>in</strong>ess opportunity at a small scale.<br />

Add<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong>se pressures to some degree was <strong>the</strong> impact <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> December 2004 tsunami along approximately<br />

650 kilometres <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> coastl<strong>in</strong>e, primarily <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> stretch between Hafun <strong>and</strong> Garacad. Initial reports <strong>of</strong><br />

leakage <strong>of</strong> possible toxic wastes from drums along part <strong>of</strong> this stretch <strong>of</strong> coast would appear to be unsubstantiated<br />

(see also Box 9). Waste pollution – ma<strong>in</strong>ly from coastal communities – however, has been cited <strong>in</strong> a<br />

number <strong>of</strong> reports (e.g. FAO, 2005a; UNDP, 1998), with wastes rang<strong>in</strong>g from discarded batteries to household<br />

wastes <strong>and</strong> animal carcases. An estimated 1.5 million people live <strong>in</strong> coastal areas. Most coastal municipalities<br />

do not have capacity to h<strong>and</strong>le <strong>the</strong> quantities <strong>of</strong> sewage <strong>and</strong> solid waste generated. Sewage treatment<br />

plants are few <strong>in</strong> number <strong>and</strong> are generally poorly ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed (Pilcher <strong>and</strong> Alsuhaibany, 2000) (see Box 16).<br />

<strong>Somalia</strong>’s m<strong>in</strong>eral sector has traditionally played only a small role <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> country’s overall economy – <strong>in</strong> 1988<br />

it represented just 0.3 per cent <strong>of</strong> total GDP. While <strong>the</strong> local geology suggests <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> valuable<br />

m<strong>in</strong>eral deposits, as <strong>of</strong> 1992, however, only a few significant sites had been located. <strong>Somalia</strong> <strong>in</strong> particular has<br />

some large uranium deposits <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Galguduud <strong>and</strong> Bay regions, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> 1984 work began to develop <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

Significant iron ore deposits have also been recorded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bay region.<br />

O<strong>the</strong>r rocks <strong>and</strong> m<strong>in</strong>erals are known to exist <strong>and</strong> available for exploitation <strong>in</strong>clude t<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Majiyahan-Dhalan<br />

area (south <strong>of</strong> Boosaaso-Ceelayo coastal strip), sepiolites from Ceel Bur, <strong>and</strong> quartz, granite, marble, limestone<br />

<strong>and</strong> gypsum <strong>in</strong> different parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country. These natural resources <strong>in</strong>clude primary raw materials for<br />

various k<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry, for example, manufactur<strong>in</strong>g cement, prefabricated walls, ro<strong>of</strong><strong>in</strong>g materials, floor,<br />

wall tiles <strong>and</strong> aggregates.<br />

Existence <strong>of</strong> good petroleum <strong>in</strong>dicators has been known for a while, <strong>and</strong> recent data highly encourage <strong>the</strong><br />

exploration potential <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country (Hersi, 2000).<br />
