Joint telecommunications venture in UK<br />

Thorn Electrical Industries Ltd and L M Ericsson have established a joint British<br />

company in order to uphold the interests <strong>of</strong> Thorn and L IVI Ericsson on the rapidly<br />

growing telecommunications market in the UK.<br />

<strong>The</strong> new company, Thorn-Ericsson Telecommunications<br />

Ltd., is capitalized initially<br />

at £ 1 million with Thorn holding<br />

51 per cent and L M Ericsson 49 per cent<br />

<strong>of</strong> the equity.<br />

Ltd (TEL) owns the shares in Swedish<br />

Ericsson Telecommunications Ltd, earlier<br />

one <strong>of</strong> L M Ericsson's subsidiaries in the<br />

UK, and a production company Thorn-<br />

Ericsson Telecommunications (Mfg) Ltd.<br />

TEL is responsible for the direction and<br />

supervision <strong>of</strong> the two companies and<br />

also for certain common functions such<br />

as administration, financing and coordination<br />

<strong>of</strong> sales efforts to the British Post<br />

Office Corporation. Swedish Ericsson will<br />

continue its successful penetration <strong>of</strong> the<br />

UK private market, while Thorn-Ericsson<br />

Telecommunications (Mfg) Ltd will be<br />

responsible for product development and<br />

manufacture within the scope <strong>of</strong> the venture.<br />

<strong>The</strong> chairman <strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong> Thorn<br />

Ericsson Telecommunications Ltd is Mr<br />

G. J. Strowger (Managing Director <strong>of</strong><br />

Thorn Electrical Industries), and the deputy<br />

chairman Fred Sundkvist (Executive<br />

Vice President <strong>of</strong> L M Ericsson). <strong>The</strong><br />

Board consists <strong>of</strong> four other members,<br />

two from Thorn and two from L M Ericsson.<br />

<strong>The</strong> General Manager is Mr. E. T.<br />

Stephens, who remains Managing Director<br />

<strong>of</strong> Swedish Ericsson Telecommunications<br />

Ltd and Thorn Ericsson Telecommunications<br />

(Mfg) Ltd.<br />

President <strong>of</strong> Mexico opens new LM Ericsson<br />

factory<br />

Teleindustria Ericsson's factory for telecommunications<br />

equipment has been<br />

opened by the President <strong>of</strong> Mexico, Luis<br />

Echeverria Alvarez, at Tlalnepantla outside<br />

Mexico City. More than US $ 8 mil­<br />

lion has been invested in the factory<br />

hitherto.<br />

Present at the opening ceremony were<br />

also the Ministers <strong>of</strong> Industry and Education,<br />

the Governors <strong>of</strong> the three Mexican<br />

Saudi Arabia orders<br />

worth $ 15 m.<br />

L M Ericsson have received three orders<br />

totalling over $ 15 million from Saudi<br />

Arabia.<br />

One <strong>of</strong> the orders signed with the Saudi<br />

Arabian Ministry <strong>of</strong> Communications<br />

covers switching equipment, <strong>telephone</strong> instruments<br />

and line equipment valued at<br />

about $ 6.5 million. This equipment is to<br />

be delivered within the next two years.<br />

It will be used for extensions <strong>of</strong> existing<br />

installations and for new installations in<br />

nine cities in the country.<br />

Another order from the Ministry <strong>of</strong><br />

Communications is an extension, worth<br />

around $4 million, <strong>of</strong> the $ 17 million<br />

order received by L M Ericsson from<br />

Saudi Arabia a year ago.<br />

At the same time L M Ericsson in partnership<br />

with the British <strong>cable</strong> manufacturer<br />

BICC has been awarded a substantial<br />

order for <strong>telephone</strong> <strong>cable</strong> from Saudi<br />

Arabia. Ericsson's share <strong>of</strong> this order is<br />

approximately $ 4.5 million. <strong>The</strong> <strong>cable</strong><br />

ordered is to be delivered within the next<br />

18 months.<br />

Federal States, the Mayor <strong>of</strong> Tlalnepantla,<br />

and a large number <strong>of</strong> prominent Mexicans.<br />

Sweden was represented by, among<br />

others, Dr Marcus Wallenberg and the<br />

President <strong>of</strong> the Group. Bjorn Lundvall.<br />

In conjunction with the opening ceremony<br />

L M Ericsson made a donatiton <strong>of</strong><br />

1 million pesos (c. US $ 80,000) for educational<br />

purposes. Dr Wallenberg, in his<br />

opening address, spoke <strong>of</strong> the great significance<br />

which the transfer <strong>of</strong> technical<br />

and production know-how through a company<br />

such as Teleindustria has for the<br />

development <strong>of</strong> a country like Mexico.<br />

This transfer <strong>of</strong> know-how, stated Dr<br />

Wallenberg, has a great significance not<br />

only for the company's customers and<br />

employees but also for its native subcontractors.<br />

L M Ericsson have been active in Mexico<br />

for nearly 70 years. <strong>The</strong> new plant,<br />

which employs 1,700 persons, accommodates<br />

not only factory buildings, but also<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice, laboratories and a training centre<br />

for Latin American telecommunications<br />

technicians. <strong>The</strong> total floor area is around<br />

35,000 m-. As a result <strong>of</strong> the rapid expansion<br />

<strong>of</strong> the company the new premises are<br />

already too small and an extension ot<br />

14,000 m- has been started upon. This involves<br />

an investment <strong>of</strong> around US $ 2.5<br />

million and is expected to be completed<br />

by the end <strong>of</strong> this year.<br />
