COMPETENCE
At the beginning of January 2010, the Manway Cannon
passed its first use of its fire test. Before this, a few
technical adjustments, improvements and amendments
were made to the device, which is produced in England,
and the personnel was trained in how to handle the
system. After this, there was nothing standing in the
way of using the Manway Cannon at the Total Raffinerie
de Normandie in Le Havre.
Two crude oil tanks, each with a diameter of 64 meters, should be
freed of altogether about 1,000 cubic meters of crude oil sludge. In
January 2010, the first conversations were done with the customers
on site and the new system was introduced. In February 2010, our
French company Buchen Services Industriels S.A.R.L. received the
order. During the preparatory scheduling, it was made clear that
both of the flushing media being used, fresh crude oil for the
first flushing and gas oil for the second run, would have to be
removed from the neighboring tanks about 200 m away. A
large amount of special piping was planned for this. Altogether,
nearly 750 m of steel pipes were laid in order to
establish the most important connections to the different
tanks. A lot of assembly work, also considering that a six
14
meter long pipe weighs about 60 kg and more than 120 of these
pipes were laid. Additionally, 80 m of pressure hose was laid for
the flushing medium, the nitrogen and the supply line for the canon,
which should be assembled in the center of the tank roof.
