temperature ranges for different ages of the waste were 35 to 50 0 C for 9-year-old waste; from 35
to 56 0 C for 6 to 7 -year-old waste; and from 33 to 60 0 C for 2 to 3 year-old waste. Also the
temperatures within the waste masses in the cells where leachate recirculation was being
practiced, were found to be 5 to 10 0 C higher than the control cell.
Literature review presented here gives an overview of the research related to moisture
measurement, moisture movement and liquid injection. In-situ moisture measurement is
practiced by several available techniques but with certain disadvantages in each case. On the
other hand, measurement of temperature is a standard practice. Thus this research was taken
upon so as to examine the possibility of using temperature change in a landfill to track moisture
arrival.
