Kleine sugar beet harvesters in an exclusive driver’s report:
With a small and a larger bunker
The KLEINE Company will present new beet harvesters on the Agritechnica trade fair.
During the harvest season 2010, we have practically used the new Beetliner machines
equipped with a small and large bunker.
Kleine is still a big name in the sector of beet harvesting, the old-established business thus
offering only 3 self-propelled cleaning and loading machines to the market. Indeed, the
decisive impulses are finely missing in the sector of agricultural technique.
Once causing sensation by producing the SF10 as an overloading harvesting machine with a
central bunker, one was in a disadvantage owing to the triumph of the machines equipped
with a large bunker and which were a competitive edge of the competitors.
But even in this field KLEINE will have something to say again: And this for a very good
reason, how latest developments have shown it: Since the harvest season 20120 pre-seasonal
machines of the new Beetliner series take turns on the fields. That’s right, it is not only one
machine, but KLEINE has even set two types of machines on their wheels.
At first sight, the smaller Beetliner Compact looks very similar to its predecessor SF10-2.
But one look behind the scenes reveals a larger bunker, once 15 m³ now 18m³, as well as
further improvements in the sector of driving, chassis and harvesting technique.
Besides, the bigger Beetliner Large with a bunker of 30 m³ in total keeps tabs on two
competitors whose product range includes machines with two axles installed.
As far as the drive is concerned KLEINE opts for the tried and tested row six-cylinder
OM 460 LA made by Mercedes Benz.
With an engine capacity of 12,8, a performance of 315 kw/ 428 HP is mobilized in the
Compact, the performance of 360 kw/ 490 HP is mobilized in the Large.
Due to the exhaust emission purification SCR and the appropriate AdBlue filling the engine
fulfils the emission standard III B. the diesel tank comprehending 1000 l in the smaller and
1300 l in the bigger Beetliner should, according to KLEINE, be most sufficient for long
working days even under harder preconditions.
In most cases the range should be even bigger. Because of the load sensing regulation of the
hydraulically driven production stages of the hydrostatic engine as well as the connection to
the engine electronics enable an automotive process with a lower revolution number – a
common technology among beet harvesters.
Page 1 of 6 / Test report Beetliner Compact and Beetliner Large / November 2011

On simple soil producing relatively low yield one easily maintained a speed of about 8 to 9
km/h, as well as a revolution number of about 1300 to 1400 turns/min.
And even if a higher performance was demanded by a drive on closely woven stands of beets,
higher speeds and loading process into the bunker during the drive or ascents in a hilly area,
the engine only rarely mobilized its rated speed to the value of 1600 t/min.
The Compact is put up with a rigid frame known from the SF 10-2. The four wheel drive
enables an turning circle of 15 m on the utter wheel - with a small lock on the front wheels
where the tires 710/79 R are put on and a big lock with the rear wheels where the tires
750/50-30.5 are put on.
As the engine is diagonally positioned over the rear axle and the bunker in between the axles,
a balance of the weight on the axle is extensively the same in the operation process.
The Large equipped with the double articulated axle attains a maximum lock up to 75 degrees
and with approximately 13 m on the utter wheel; the machine is more flexible than the smaller
harvester.
The bunker is placed in the centre over the rear axle which has to carry most of the crops`
weight. So the front axle is employed the same way, as used in the Compact, whereas the soil
pressure at the back is spread out on the entire width of the vehicle. This is due to the fact that
the rear axle is equipped with four wheels, 620/75 R34 each. By means of this, compared to a
classic machine with two axles, belonging to this category, the Beetliner Large stands out
with a bigger surface about 18 % which contacts the soil. While using the machine, a slower
drive with axles moved towards the lanes that is common practice in this class of machines
and is used in order to enlarge the surface driven on.
The exact drive along the beet row is lead by a automotive steering, whereby the rear axle is
driven by the leaf sensor and the front axle is driven by the harvesting unit.
Both Beetliners work with the same topper and lifter unit, which can be moved 15 cm
from the middle
In the new Integral combi topper one can switch between the lateral leaf spreader of the beet
leaf and the “Inline”– storage between the rows while the machine is driven.
The revolution number of the chopper shaft can thereby be infinitely adjusted to the leaf and
weed conditions.
The depth control of the chopper is arranged by to hydraulically driven support wheels which
even carry this unit during transport on the road.
The modified scalper “Opticut” either provided with an automatic system for the beet head
thickness is adjustable from the cabin both in height and in thickness.
KLEINE has recently developed a standard lifting unit equipped with a single oscillator. If
requested the row width measuring 45 or 50 is firm and if required a hydraulic adjustment of
45 or 50 cm is either available. The vibrating share laterally swings to the exact row
adjustment up to 3,5cm and are hydraulically driven by an eccentric shaft. Both the revolution
number and the harvesting depth and the position to the beet can be adjusted from the cabin.
The hydraulic stone protection is new, in case there are too many stones in the soil, the lifting
unit can be lifted up.
Page 2 of 6 / Test report Beetliner Compact and Beetliner Large / November 2011

The feeler wheels take the depth control which is adjustable from the cabin which is
pneumatically supported. Weeds and leafs are grabbed by the feeler wheels what should avoid
the intake of this material by the share and its blockage.
Even in the point of cleaning both harvesters have the same mode of operation
With the help of hydraulically driven transport rollers the beets are carried on a roller unit.
The transport roller’s pre-elected revolution number automatically adapt to the harvesting
speed. The hydraulically driven, adjustable and reversible rollers (3 continuous and 3 stub
rollers) undertake pre-cleaning. By means of a single drive and the portal construction the
front axle free enough space for two screen stars, each 1, 03 m in diameter.
The three screen stars behind are also 1, 30 m in diameter. In total KLEINE indicates a
cleaning line of 12 m length. Both the revolution number of the hydraulically driven screen
stars and the grills can be adjusted to the harvesting conditions. For harder conditions spring
tine grills for the screen stars are available instead of grills if requested.
The ring elevator with a width of 90 cm has plastic tappets and transports the beets in the
bunker with a infinitely adjustable speed. A distribution roller is used for a steady filling. The
bunker of the Compact can be entered through a platform; the Large has a lateral door to be
pushed, together with an integrated stepladder.
The construction of the elevator enables an employment of a system registering data
concerning the crop, but which must, according to KLEINE, still be developed. While the
machine is harvesting this system should already capture important data which might be vital
for the later loading and collection logistic.
The beets will be unloaded over a transport belt 1, 40 m in width and which is infinitely
adjustable in height.
The overloading height amounting to 1, 80 m up to 4, 50 m makes it possible to lay out
clamps 10 m in width. The emptying is supported by the long-scratch floor, and accordingly
the speed of the transporting belt can be adjusted. The time to load the beets into the bunker is
35 s for the Compact, and 45 s for the Large, those values are stated by KLEINE and which
are rather good results.
The machine of the previous series had to do with the CLAAS cabins of the former
generation. According to the manufacturers statements the new, exclusive cabin produced by
Mauser is offered to KLEINE`s for a standard production. Either the terminal by Müller is
close to the series and used for the operation and surveillance of the different components.
The Beetliner is entirely controlled by a multifunctional lever and the above-mentioned
terminal which is connected to mostly decentralized control units via ISO BUS. Some
elements of the control units for instance are placed near the hydraulic .
An USB interface delivered on demand enables the import and export of the machine’s data
to ISO BUS Standard. To ensure an optional video surveillance system, including 4 cameras,
a separate screen with split screen function will be installed.
RESULT:
Representing the Beetliner series KLEINE shows two new beet harvesters on the
AGRITECHNICA. On the one hand, there is the Beetliner Compact which might be the
successor of the SF10-2 whose bunker is enlarged to a capacity of 18 m³. On the other hand,
the development of a 30 m²-bunker on the Beetliner Large was more unexpected, and by
means of its construction KLEINE intends to keep up with competition again.
The machine offers interesting innovations such as four wheels on one axle.
A modular design considerably makes is easier to improve the construction of a further model
range: KLEINE will show its latest flagship to the public, the Beetliner Max equipped with
three axles and a bunker with a large capacity of 40 m³.
Finally, reliability, service and also the price will decide the success of the Beetliner-models.
Reliability and Service must work in practice. The price lists will be firm at the moment of the
Agritechnica.
