46 Medicinski Glasnik, Volumen 9, Number 1, February 2012 There was a significant inverse relation between Vp and carotid IMT (Figure 4; r=-0.37; p
tion by Uzun et al (21). Therefore, this study was designed to assess its validity in a different population, in which the atherosclerosis is an important concern. Moreover, aortic distentibility was not evaluated. If it was evaluated, establishing a pathopyhsiological casual relationship would be more precise. On the other hand, Gullu et al (22) have shown that there was a significant relation between noninvasive predictors of atherosclerosis, including carotid intima-media thickness and aortic stiffness. The relation between carotid IMT and Vp might indirectly suggest a relation between aortic stiffness and Vp. REFERENCES 1. World Health Organization. The world health report 1999 making a difference. A report of Yıldırım et al Aortic flow propagation velocity In conclusion, the aortic flow propagation velocity is a simple, feasible and reproducible marker of atherosoclerosis with an acceptable sensitivity and specificity. However, the evidence presented in this study was based on indirect measures of atherosclerosis. There is a need for longitudinal prospective studies to use it routinely.
