(<strong>US</strong>D $12,700).<br />

The police in Diourbel seized fake medicines worth 11 milli<strong>on</strong><br />

CFA francs (<strong>US</strong>D $21,800). The medicines were destined for<br />

the religious city of Touba.<br />

The registrar of the Pharmacy Board said that more than 4<br />

billi<strong>on</strong> Le<strong>on</strong>es (<strong>US</strong>D $1.33 milli<strong>on</strong>) worth of illegally imported,<br />

substandard, and counterfeit drugs were destroyed between<br />

January and July 2007.<br />

John Zorokog, Chairman of the Pharmacy Board K<strong>on</strong>o District,<br />

burned 65 milli<strong>on</strong> Le<strong>on</strong>es (<strong>US</strong>D $21,700) worth of expired,<br />

substandard, and counterfeit drugs in public.<br />

The Pharmacy Board destroyed Le 31 milli<strong>on</strong> (<strong>US</strong>D $10,600)<br />

worth of counterfeit and substandard medicines at the Kenema<br />

Government Hospital. According to Sahr Sylvanus Komba, the<br />

board chairman for Kenema and Kailahun districts, n<strong>on</strong>e of the<br />

medicines had a seal of origin.<br />

A recall issued by the Pharmacy Board directed several illegally<br />

imported products to be withdrawn from the market because<br />

they did not meet quality standards. All products with labels<br />

from “KVA, KAV, KYV, KV, KYY, KYN, KNA, and Milan<br />

Hamburg” are included in the recall as they are all counterfeit.<br />

The Ministry of Health and Sanitati<strong>on</strong> has publicly announced<br />

that it intends to destroy all counterfeit pharmaceutical products<br />

that are imported into Sierra Le<strong>on</strong>e. C<strong>on</strong>fiscated by the<br />

Pharmacy Board, a 20ft c<strong>on</strong>tainer holding 650 cart<strong>on</strong>s of<br />

substandard toothpaste c<strong>on</strong>taminated with diethylene glycol is<br />

am<strong>on</strong>g the first to be destroyed.<br />
