According to a report from the Organizati<strong>on</strong> for Ec<strong>on</strong>omic<br />

Cooperati<strong>on</strong> and Development, 75% of the fake drugs supplied<br />

around world originate in India.<br />

According to a report of the Federati<strong>on</strong> of Indian Chambers of<br />

Commerce and Industry (FICCI), 15-20% of medicines sold in<br />

India are fake.<br />

In the first six m<strong>on</strong>ths of fiscal year 2011, state authorities tested<br />

more than 26,000 medicine samples and found 1,420<br />

substandards. Gujarat and Maharashtra accounted for <strong>on</strong>e-third<br />

of all substandards.<br />

Police in Temple City arrested three people for their alleged<br />

involvement with a fake drug gang that has been operating in<br />

the Southern districts and the textile city of Coimbatore for<br />

almost a year.<br />

Of the medicines found “not of standard quality” across India<br />

last year, 36% were from Maharashtra (23%) and Tamil Nadu<br />

(13%). Of the total 48,082 medicine samples tested by state<br />

drug c<strong>on</strong>trollers between 2011 and October 2012, 2,186 (4.5%)<br />

samples failed quality tests.<br />

The Internati<strong>on</strong>al Pharmaceutical Manufacturer Group (IPMG)<br />

estimates that around 40% of medicines in Ind<strong>on</strong>esia may be<br />

counterfeit. Last year, the group estimated the number to be<br />

25%.<br />

According to Weddy Mallyan, head of the Center for Drugs and<br />

Food Investigati<strong>on</strong> at the Food and Drug M<strong>on</strong>itoring Agency,<br />

several fake medicines were found <strong>on</strong> the islands of Java and<br />

Sumatra following a three-m<strong>on</strong>th investigati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
