(batch no. ECQ-100001; and colquine, quinine sulphate<br />
suspensi<strong>on</strong> 60 mL (batch no. ECQ-10001). The recall is the first<br />
official enforcement acti<strong>on</strong> LMHRA has taken since its<br />
establishment in September 2010.<br />
The acting managing director of LMHRA stated that expired or<br />
counterfeit drugs are being smuggled into Liberia from<br />
neighboring Guinea through the Ganta border port. She further<br />
stated that about 60% of the drugs <strong>on</strong> the local market are<br />
counterfeit.<br />
During a raid at a pharmacy in Curepipe, approximately 10,000<br />
pills with the brand name “Esose” were seized. The<br />
manufacturer <strong>on</strong> the packaging was listed as an Indian<br />
subsidiary of the British laboratory Glenmark; however,<br />
Glenmark manufacturers a product with the brand name “Esoz.”<br />
In October 2006, <strong>on</strong>e Seychellois and <strong>on</strong>e Australian – both<br />
owners of companies operating in the Port Louis port – were<br />
arrested for importing approximately 185,000 psychotropic<br />
medicines into the country.<br />
NAFDAC impounded a 20-foot c<strong>on</strong>tainer of counterfeit<br />
pharmaceuticals c<strong>on</strong>taining Septrin (co-trimoxazole),<br />
Glucophage (Metformin), Augmentin (co-amoxiclav),<br />
Ampiclox (ampicillin), oxytocin injecti<strong>on</strong>s, Aldomet<br />
(methyldopa), and Encephabol (pyritinol hydrochloride).<br />
With 150 police officers, 350 soldiers, and 150 of their own<br />
pers<strong>on</strong>nel, NAFDAC successfully closed down the Onitsha drug<br />
market in Anambra State.<br />
The Lagos State Task Force <strong>on</strong> Counterfeit, Fake Drugs, and<br />
Unwholesome Processed Foods c<strong>on</strong>fiscated N80 milli<strong>on</strong> (<strong>US</strong>D<br />
$678,000 ) worth of fake drugs, sealed seven illegal<br />
pharmaceutical premises, and arrested two illegal operators<br />
during recent raids.<br />
