some attention to the joint work of Alice Le Plongeon, his wife. Benavidas Castillo<br />

credits previous authors on Le Plongeon, especially the basic publication of Robert<br />

Brunhouse. There is a useful bibliography.<br />

An externsive review of the life <strong>and</strong> work of Désiré Charnay (1828-1915). The author<br />

notes that, following his 1857-1861 research <strong>and</strong> photography in Mexico, Charnay<br />

spent all of 1862 in Paris preparing the photograph <strong>and</strong> text for his l<strong>and</strong>mark<br />

publication, Cités et ruines américaines: Mitla, Palenque, Izamal, Chichen Itza, Uxmal,<br />

published 1862-1863. This book included an essay by Viollet-le-Duc. Lorelei Zapata<br />

Peraza provides substantial information about Charnay’s travels <strong>and</strong> ideas, but very<br />

little directly on his photographs. There is an extensive bibliography.<br />

Austrian scholar, Teobert Maler (1842-1917). This is a superbly produced, four<br />

hundred page volume, published in its original German. The previously unpublished<br />

material includes Maler’s manuscript papers, with diagrams <strong>and</strong> sketches, housed in<br />
