Th12AH2. Special Session: A Tribute to Professor Mikio Takagi<br />

Professor Mikio Takagi passed away on February 6, 2006. He was an<br />
ac<strong>com</strong>plished engineer and professor in digital image processing and<br />
remote sensing technology. He will be remembered for his lifetime<br />
research, development and dissemination of digital image processing<br />
and achievements that span almost the entire spectrum of remote<br />
sensing.<br />
He was General Chairman of the 1993 GRSS International<br />
Symposium held in Tokyo, the first IGARSS held in the Far East. His<br />
interest in that IGARSS started 10 years earlier, in 1983 when he<br />
attended the IGARSS held in San Francisco. His dedicated interest<br />
and pursuit was matched with his interest and <strong>com</strong>mensurate service<br />
on the GRSS Administrative Committee.<br />
Dr. Takagi was born on May 16, 1936 in Tokyo. He received his BS,<br />
MS and PhD from the University of Tokyo. He joined the University of<br />
Tokyo as Associate Professor and promoted to Professor in 1979. He<br />
spent 1971-72 as a visiting research scientist at the University of<br />
California in Santa Barbara.<br />
As Professor he taught numerous students, many receiving their PhD.<br />
He served the technical profession in numerous ways and received<br />
numerous recognitions. The Japanese Emperor awarded him The<br />
Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon.<br />
