Sharron Seideman – Queen of Enthusiasm
Look up the words energy and enthusiasm
in the dictionary and there’s Sharron
Seideman’s picture, seriously. Well, OK, not
really, but to anyone who’s ever had a brush
with her, it could be. In fact, iconic Gerrie
Frank once referred to her in his newspaper
column as Oregon’s most enthusiastic
person! And Gerrie Frank knows a few
people in Oregon and elsewhere.
Born in Bend, Sharron Lee McConnell
(Note the number of double letters in her
maiden name. Does that look normal to you?
Kidding. She pointed this out for me.) moved
to Albany in the 6th grade. She graduated
from Albany Union High School where she
Bill Isabell
was involved in basketball, volleyball and
track. She was also president of the student
government, home coming queen, and in
Girls League. Sharron and her two younger
sisters were all cheerleaders there as well.
Her 13 month older brother was not. The
youngest sister even served as the high
school mascot when Sharron was a senior
cheerleader.
Following high school, she was off to
Sharronn Seideman in front of the Chamber offices
Oregon State University (OSU, or OS lately).
In her sophomore year at OS she met,
through Gary Edlebrock, a mutual friend,
the irrepressible Richard (Dick) Seideman.
Dick, who was born in Montana but grew up
in Klamath Falls (a valedictorian Pelican, no
less) was a Big Man On Campus (BMOC) at
OS both figuratively and physically. He was
not only the student body president but also
the memorial union president. Dick thought
it was love at first sight but Sharron thought
otherwise.
Well, something clicked with Sharron
because they married in 1961. Dick wanted
to study law so after graduation off they both
went to Salem and Willamette Law School.
While Dick was in law school, Sharron taught
physical education and health and was the
rally and drama advisor for three years at
Walker Middle School. She remembers that
Willamette had a special degree for wives of
their law school students. They gave them
a PHT (“Putting Hubby Through”) degree.
She’s got one.
After law school, Dick joined the US
Air Force as a 2nd Lt. JAG and served in
Columbus, Mississippi for three years.
Sharron worked at Mississippi State
University as a counselor for military
students. They took advantage of their
location before the kids came along and had
a fabulous time traveling all over the South.
In 1967, after his discharge from the Air
Force, the couple moved back to Oregon
landing in Salem. For seven years, Dick
worked with the law firm of Garrett Hemann
Robertson. From there he went to work for
Byron Hendricks as the legal counsel at
Prudential Real Estate. He’s currently an
administrative law judge (ALJ) for the State
of Oregon working out of the old State Farm
building in northeast Salem.
For the next 15 years or so Sharron enjoyed
raising the kids, Jeff and Molly. Jeff came
along in 1967 and Molly in 1969. But she
also spent a lot of time doing volunteer work
and for six of those years as the manager
and buyer for the gift shop at the Salem
Hospital.
Around 1979, Sharron was on the first
