The truth is that most information provided by the media does little more than to create unrealistic expectations. Keep media information in proper perspective. Know that listening to media reports and commentary doesn’t necessarily result in gaining further insight, in fact it can have quite the opposite effect. Be wary of gurus. Probably the biggest and most obvious misconception promoted by the media is that someone can actually predict what will happen next in the financial markets, and that if you can just find that person, your financial future will be assured. You can actually have more control over your financial life than you probably realize if you follow two basic guidelines. First, you must know the actions that will enable you to be financially functional. Second, you must stick to them no matter what. Separate Fact from Fiction and Establish Realistic Goals Now that you’ve learned where the control for your financial life really lies, you’re ready to start establishing goals, which are the center point of any financial plan. Take the time to determine what your goals are, but don’t dream impossible dreams. Apply the numbers. Goals without numbers are fantasies. You and your financial advisor need find out how your goals translate into numbers. This will help develop a destination. 2007-2008 | SEASON | CLASSICAL MOZART CLARINET CONCERTO Sharon Kam, Clarinet Gregory Vajda, Conductor Bartók: Music For Strings, Percussion & Celeste Mozart: Clarinet Concerto Strauss: Suite From Der Rosenkavalier Tuesday | April 15, 2008 | 8 pm Bartok sounds vivid and lean. They won and she continued with Congressman Smith for 10 years right on through his campaign for governor of Oregon. Then, in 1995, the same year Mike McLaran became its executive director, Sharron joined the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce as special events manager. Her first Chamber event was the annual golf tournament working with Ken Jundt, a past Chamber president. After that came ShowBiz, the huge and very successful annual trade show (May 8 this year) that started at Willamette University, only to quickly outgrow that venue and relocate at the Marion County Fairgrounds. Another Chamber event Sharron loves to talk about is one of the newest, “Evening De Elegance.” The annual Evening De Elegance was begun with the invaluable assistance of Ross Carey of US Bank, also a past Chamber president. For years, Seideman has been the backbone of one of the most active Chamber groups, the extremely successful and fun weekly Greeters. For those of you who haven’t been to a Greeters meeting, let me just say you’re really missing out on something. With a regular attendance of between 150 and 200 (the record was 277 a few years back) business people, I dare say it’s the most successful business networking (and did I say fun) group in town. Concert Sponsor: Morrow Equipment Company that group for 15 months (my predecessor, Dave Rogers, left early for work in Portland) about six years ago. I believe I hold the title of longest term for a Greeters Chair. It was a highlight in my professional life. And speaking of backbone (no pun intended), Sharron has had some pretty serious back inssues over the years. Since 1980, when she had her first back surgery, she’s had four more. Her last one was about four years ago. She even did her work in a partial body cast in 1990. Remember that? That didn’t stop her? Heck no! She continued to do the myriad Chamber things that she’s become so well known for. What a trooper! What an optimist! What energy! In her words, “pain management is mind over matter.” Like the old joke, if you don’t mind, it won’t matter. That’s Sharron. Sharron loves the Chamber and the people she works with like you wouldn’t believe. To her (and to the rest of them) it’s just one big happy family. One big happy family that gets a ton of work done. Everything about the Chamber is win, win, win. She looks forward to going to there every single day. So where does Sharron Seideman get all this courage and resolve? From her semi-pro baseball playing dad that’s where. He had a saying she’s never forgotten. She’s applied it throughout her life. He said, “Take the bull by the horns and you can do it”! Well, I guess you could say that’s exactly what she’s done her whole life. And guess what? It sure seems to have worked. Some other organizations and positions that now take and have taken a little of Sharron’s time over the years include The Assistance League board president, Salem Hospital Auxiliary board president, Boys and Girls Aid Society board president, Rotarian Women president, Walton Guest House board president, Delta Gamma Sorority Salem alumni group president, advisor to Delta Gamma Sorority, Willamette Universities, Salem’s Riverfront Carousel board, and last but not lease, Miss Marion Polk Scholarship Program board member. Whew! Do the words “Take the bull by the horns and you can do it” apply here? Understandably and deservedly so, for all of this work, she received a Distinguished Service Award from the Salem Chamber of Commerce around 2000. Hobbies for Sharron (like when?) include time with the family, entertaining three grandchildren (all girls ages 9, 5 and 2), photography, gardening, Broadway shows in Portland and reading. So if you want to be around spirit, courage, volunteerism, boundless positive energy, enthusiasm, and a perpetual smile, come to the Chamber’s weekly Greeters meeting at a venue, weekly, near you and meet Oregon’s “Queen of Enthusiasm,” Sharron Seideman. And if you should ask her advice on a personal initiative you’ve been entertaining, don’t be surprised if she tells you, “Take the bull by the horns and you can do it”! Dad would be proud.
