Tortebat made the 12 copperplates drawn from Vesalius but the text is of Roger de Piles<br />

(Paris, 1635-1709) the famous art writer. He takes Titian for the artist of the tables.<br />

Someones believe Tortebat is the pseudonym for de Piles.<br />

The edition quoted is one of several. It contains two engravings ‘Tournoy où le roy Henry II<br />

fut blessé à mort’ and ‘La mort du roy Henry deuxième’; the latter shows the wounded king<br />

in bed surrounded by courtiers and with Vesalius and Paré in attendance. There is also a<br />

facsimile edition of the plates in Les grandes scènes historiques du XVIe siècle; facsimile<br />

reproduction of J. Tortorel et J. Perrissin published under the direction of M. Alfred<br />

Franklin, Paris, Fischbacher, 1886.<br />
