INTRODUCTION
For evident reasons, since this is an alphabetical list intended to be expandable,
whenever possible the full first names are used. To avoid ambiguity in calling for copies of an
article, the names of periodicals are also mentioned in full and ‘ibidems’ are replaced by the
original data.
When an authors’ name is missing Cushing doesn’t always begin the reference with the
title as we do (e.g. in the addition by O’Malley: 450. BASEL, ...). In these cases the title,
accompanied by its original number at its end, has been moven to the right alphabetical place.
Annotations or commentaries on titles by H. Cushing (001-728) are copied unchanged,
except for the punctuation in some of them and when necessary a reference number is adapted
to correspond with the new numbering. To avoid ambiguity, references to chapter X, dealing
with the Vesaliana, in his own bio-bibliography are noted more clearly.
For uniformity and presentation a careful attempt has been made to eliminate most
typographical differences from various sources without disturbing their informative content.
Except for those of Cushing the responsibility for the annotations is entirely mine. Although
not always possible, a considerable effort has been made to give relevant information for
further study when this is not evident from the title. Whenever relevant and possible, an
English translation of the title is added. All entries have at least been double checked against
transcription errors.
Some inaccuracies have been dealt with in the following way:
1. Due to the alphabetical inversion by O’Malley and in order to respect this logic the numbers
for DELECLUZE and DELANNOY (respectively 481 and 482, now 442 and 439) were switched,
with the original number mentioned between brackets as [HC481] and [HC482]. The same
happened in the first list with PILCHER and PIERSOL (respectively 319 and 320, now being
1409 and 1403 (originally [HC319] and [HC320]). Furthermore the references to ANDREAS
Valerius (then 011, 012 and 013, now 38, 39 and 40) have been moved upwards between
ANDRE Vésale and ANDREAS Vesalius where they alphabetically belong.
2. Unfortunately Cushing did not always respect the chronological order. Here numbers have
not been changed.
3. The following titles in the second list have an identical counter-part in Cushing’s first list.
Only one of them is saved, mentioning however the two original numbers:
107 and 483, now 446 with [HC107] [HC483]
138 and 507a, now 584 with [HC138] [HC507a]
294 and 608, now 1240 with [HC294] [HC608].
4. In order to respect the alphabetical order, two references of O’Malley and Saunders have
been moven from the top to the bottom of their sublist:
617, now 1337 with [HC617]
618, now 1340 with [HC618].
