Leonardo da Vinci WELCOME TO CREATIVITY Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity in thanking parents and students who attended our ‘Meet the Tutor Evening’ - it was a very worthwhile event and many parents gave us positive feedback about the evening. Thank you! Since our Meet the Tutor evening we have some exciting news to share! Creativity has been re-named as the Leonardo da Vinci School. Da Vinci was an incredibly talented, creative innovator and the students voted for their school to be named after him following a series of presentations about ‘creative’ individuals. Da vinci was an Italian Renaissance superstar. He was not only a painter THE DA VINCI FACTOR In Term 2 we will be on the trail of real talent by launching our very own ‘X Factor’ competition between the tutor groups in the da Vinci School. Tutor groups will be able to audition for ‘The da Vinci Factor’ during tutor time and there will be a grand final before Christmas. The winners or winner will receive 500 vivos and a Mufti Day for their tutor group. Staff are also welcome to audition - the more the merrier! We will release more information in the first week back after half term! PARENT ‘DROP IN SURGERY’ Monday 7 November from 3.30pm - 4.15pm. Venue: The Learning Resource Centre, Darwell Campus. If you have any questions or would like to work in partnership with the Da Vinci Team on future events, join us for refreshments and discussion. There will be several staff available. We look forward to meeting with you. QUIZ WINNERS: TERM 1 This Term, we held an Inter-Form General Knowledge Weekly Quiz covering a variety of topics: Entertainment, Music, Sport, Maths. This term’s quiz winners are Miss Lamb, Cr3 and Mrs Aldridge, Cr4, received sweets for their Tutor Groups to share and a mufti-day on 14 Friday 21 October. FANTASTIC! but a sculptor, mathematician, musician, architect, writer and much more. His most famous work and most well-known is probably the Mona Lisa. However, he was a very talented man with a real sense of drive and determination. We want this to be reflected in the ethos of the da Vinci School - we want students to be active in their learning and celebrate their talents and achievements. We are 100% committed to developing the potential of all our learners and with the vast array of talent in the da Vinci School we hope that every student will not only contribute to their own personal success but also to that of the Academy as a whole. DISCOVERY: DARWIN Welcome to the first ever Darwin School page, the place to see and be seen for everything newsworthy from what we are sure will be the best school in the Academy. It's down to you to make it happen! STARTING OUT WITH SUCCESS! COMPETITION So here we are, six weeks into the brand new year at the brand new academy in our brand new school, and it has surely been a voyage of Discovery for all of us. Students and teachers alike have been travelling back and forth between the campuses, meeting and working with new people in new environments and getting on as they get to know each other. With 300 of you all directly under my jurisdiction I haven't managed to get to know you all yet, but I'm working on it. Eight students can feel rightly proud to have come to my attention already, however, as they are our Students of the Week. If you want to be considered for ‘Student of the Week’ then please let your tutor know what you have been up to either in or out of school and you could be nominated. Ashley Neale Yasmin Ripley Shannon Hollebon Megan Bullard Alex Bolton Jordan Oak Yasmin Page Emma Waters FOCUS ON ACHIEVEMENTS The majority of you have also made a really good start with ‘Darwin School’, as we are now called, starting the year top in both the Behaviour and Vivo stakes of all the mixed age schools. We only have the Year 7s to beat now and I reckon we can do it if we really try! One of my key focuses next term, though, is going to be the achievement of every single Darwin student and, to this end, I will be making regular the st leonards academy How many of you recognise the famous series of pictures showing how man evolved from apes? Well I think it would be absolutely fantastic if we could extend this image back further and further into the past, right the way down the evolutionary line of man, back towards the very birth of life itself. So the beginning picture would be some single celled organism and we would journey up from invertebrates to vertebrates, from water to land right the way up to those final four pictures. Furthermore once the new academy is completed I would love to see this extended evolutionary timeline decorating the corridor walls of the Darwin School area. This is a massive project and I'm not sure it could be completed individually unless you had a lot of spare time! However, I believe if you got together in teams and worked on sections of the timeline, then between us as a school we could find images to complete that evolutionary journey that spans millions of years. I will put up vivos for anyone who can complete a sequence of five to 10 animals, named and with pictures and dates, that we can then start building into our monster completed timeline. weekly tours of lessons to give you the chance to show off to me the work you are doing. If I enter a classroom I want to be inundated with Discovery students desperate to show me work they have completed to their highest ability and if you show me something worthy you can guarantee I'll find some vivomiles to send your way. 15
