ST LEONARDS ACADEMY CROSS COUNTRY RUN 2011
Over 150 students were involved in either running or
marshalling the annual Cross Country run last week, hosted
on Edinburgh Campus. Runners from three primary schools
attended, St Paul’s CE, St Leonards CE, and West St
Leonards primary schools, as well as secondary school
runners from both campuses of the Academy. It was great
to see our students making such a good impression on the
younger pupils and being such excellent sports leaders.
The secondary school boys’ race, Year 8, was won by Josh
Paige, with Harry Jackson and Sean Boyd Stevenson taking
second and third. In the Year 7 race Harry Mitchell, Josh
Williams and Matthew Rea took Gold, Silver and Bronze. The
girls’ event was won by Gabriel Woods, with Chloe Stretton, also of Year 8, taking second place. Edna
Mbanwi took the top spot in Year 7, with Elle Rhodes taking second.
TABLE TENNIS CLUB
A great start has been made to the Hastings
and District Table Tennis League with 13
teams entered in both Division 1 and 2. We
have over 20 players from both the Darwell
and Edinburgh campuses registered, but we
need a few more for Division 2. If you would
like to come and play, Table Tennis takes
place on the Edinburgh Campus 5.30pm-
7.30pm on a Wednesday in term time.
KEN LOACH
COMPETITION
On Thursday 6 October 20 students from all
years took part in a Film Club competition. It
was to mark the 75th birthday of celebrated
British director, Ken Loach. Having watched
Kes, the students then spent the day writing
stories and poems to enter the 'Between the
Lines' competition. The
standard was very high and
hopefully the judges will be
equally impressed with The
St Leonards Academy's
creativity. The stories and
poems will be published
locally, available at £2.00
per copy.
CELEBRATING
BLACK HISTORY MONTH
at the St Leonards Academy with Capoeira
October is Black History Month; a time for raising
awareness of the cultural heritage and achievements of
people whose ancestors originated from Africa.
Here at The St Leonards Academy a group of Year 8
pupils took part in a two-day workshop exploring
Capoeira, the music, dance and martial arts developed
in Brazil by African slaves and their descendants. Pupils
observed the traditions and customs of the art
throughout the workshop by showing respect for each
other and working together. During the two days they
all had the opportunity to sing, create music using
traditional instruments, and practice their martial arts
movements. It was a great experience and pupils had
lots of fun trying out new skills, playing Capoeira and
making new friends.
