The Brave Boy | Gerri Tiernen He was about 8, a serious looking dark haired boy. He usually waited with his sister. She was younger, a carefree spirit. When she talked she waved her hands in a fairy like way, with a sweet smile and pretty, dancing eyes. Today she was intensely writing something in her notebook at the table where she waited. The boy walked over to the man at the pool table. He watched, waiting, the clacking of the balls breaking the silence. The man, aimed his cue stick, and then looked down at the boy. “I have to see my father,” the boy said. He didn’t know the man, but he’d seen his mother and uncle talk to him, right here in the recreation room, in the basement at the Veterans Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut. The boy and his sister waited here often while their mother visited with their father. It’s where other families waited, too. Children weren’t allowed in the patient rooms in 1956. “Is that right?” the man said. What did the kid think he was some kind of a magician who could just make things happen? “I was in the bathroom. I heard you say that my father might die today,” the boy said. “I have to tell him something.” The boy held his head up high. Only a slight sniffle betrayed his bravado. The man stood still, looking at the boy. “Come with me,” he said. They walked to a closed door, where the man knocked, rapidly; rapping his knuckles sharply and continuously until it was opened by a hospital worker dressed in white. “This boy needs to see his father,” he said with authority, authority he didn’t have. “You damned well better make it happen!” he said. The father was wheeled into the recreation room. He was laying flat on a gurney, with only a small pillow under his head, a white sheet covering him to his neck. “Hey,” he said. The children heard his voice before they knew it was him. They flew to his side, the girl gaily chatting and hugging. The boy stood tall and brave. He leaned into his father’s right ear, standing on tiptoe to get high enough and close enough. He spoke softly but with determination. The father looked at the boy seriously. “Good boy,” he said. The little girl giggled and waved as her father was wheeled away. “I love you, Daddy” she said. The boy stood tall, brave. His shoulders started to shake. He slipped his shirt sleeve over his right hand and used the cuff to wipe his eyes. The tears began to fall. He held his head up and Red Wheelbarrow | 129
