I wanted the night to end. It’s 1:26 AM. Ken messaged me online. He’s curious. He wanted to know who it was I liked. I almost told him. I really wanted to tell him so I can fucking move on with my own life. Pathetic. I couldn’t even take the advice I gave to Maggie. The conversation moved on. “Ken,” I typed, “I’ll tell you now. Let me tell you over the phone.” I looked for his number. My heart had begun beating to His own tune. The phone rang on his end, and he answered. * * * It’s now 3:27AM and I finally get off the phone with him. I told him. Everything. Our conversation could not be any more normal. He took it cool; he rejected me as I expected it. We talked about when I started liking him. It was after our big fight during Winter quarter. I told him I founded him disgusting, stupid, vile, impudent, and an ass during our argument, but in the end, we always managed to make-up with a bouquet of laughter. I called him immature, I hated him, oh, how much I hated him, but he always made me smile, and no one else could have done such a disgraceful, exceptional job. He complimented me about how I changed. About how I would never have had the guts to do this without changing myself completely. For the better. We went back to the past; everything, everything in the past. How I was always there. How I was always so fucking right. He said it. He said he was stubborn and I always was the one to pull him back. He talked to me about the future, about how in the end, I only deserved someone who met my standards. Someone who could change the world. “Will anything change between us?” “No, we’re still going to be best friends.” “Ken,” I said, “do you know of the thousand obnoxious necessities of the humming bees?” He laughed. He told me to shut up. To stop being a nerd. And at the end of the long two hour conversation, I grew tired of him. I grew tired of his crisp voice. This was probably the best thing that has happened to me tonight. I remembered hoping for things to remain like this. But it didn’t. I woke up feeling like I just recovered from the most intense surgery in the fucking world. I felt shattered. My left foot departed my bed first. I could feel it. The disgusting humid air, the putrid hot wind that tempted me to stop inhaling. I looked in the mirror. Three hours.
