Canyon Land | Lauren Catron
Telephone poles pegged like crosses one after the other on into nothing
but more red canyon land.
And the hills sparkle with bits of the smashed glass so thick in the sand
they might be strange desert plants, blooming dirty in the clay.
Mesas rise out of the ground like living things, there profiles like human
faces gasping upward, gazing dazed wise into the stars above them.
Huge trucks groan as if unyielding monsters, smoking breath, screaming
on, vicious spinning legs spurring them into nothing more but red canyon
land.
And my little brother is almost a man asleep on my lap in the setting
sun as we trill along the artery of a nation.
Oh those dotted stars, oh those heavy clouds, oh the wide moon.
And my little brother is almost a man.
