Shrug | Tina Wilkerson
Sun-kissed shoulders
More like sun-bitten shoulders
Sun freckled, speckled, crackled, deep red-brown
Won’t turn-around shoulders
Sun-battled shoulders
Spouting a grate-like voice to match the weathered skin
Smoker’s rasp without the vice
Sun-shielding shoulders
Flesh made mountains facing the rudiments, the elements
Through squints I caught the sting of light behind them
The wiry hand
Like an outstretched mitt, stiff and calloused
Solidly bony and resilient fingers swallowing my own
They reached out and touched the scarf around my neck
My hands, 2 translucent, pearlescent fish bellies
Now itchy with cold even under the gloves
Even under the bright winter blaze we shared
Was the skin on your own hands ever so thin
Where did those marks come from
Isn’t it bright out
Aren’t you cold
All I got was a shrug
