Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara College of Engineering
& Technology was established in 1979 in Dharwad, by the great
visionary Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade of Dharmasthala with three
undergraduate courses in engineering. The constant
encouragement of the President, SDME Society, Dr. D
Veerendra Heggade and the able supervision of Prof. N.
Vajrakumar, has made it possible for the college to grow into a
well established institution. The college now runs seven
undergraduate programs in engineering, three postgraduate
programs in engineering along with one MBA program which
was added very recently with a total student strength of 2700.
Housed in an area of 68 acres, the college has been catering to
the needs of students from all over the country. The college is
recognized by All India Council for Technical Education. It was
affiliated to Karnataka University, Dharwad, till 2000 and now
is affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum,
upon its forming. The management is very keen on providing
best education and facilities to the students and hence it is well
equipped with state of the art technology.
All along, the college has been known for its excellent teaching
– learning process. All the departments have well experienced
teachers. The fact that some of the departments have teachers
with average teaching experience of above 15 years, speaks of
the stability of the system. Apart from teaching, the teachers
are involved in research activities also, resulting into a number
of publications in a wide variety of refereed international and
national journals. Number of papers are presented in various
conferences held throughout the country every year. Several
projects, funded from, both Government and private
organizations, are taken up regularly. Last year the Civil
Engineering department alone could attract sponsored
projects worth Rs. 60 Lakhs. The faculty is ably supported by
qualified technical and non technical supporting staff.
All programs of the college were accredited by National Board
of Accreditation (NBA) in 2002 for three years and were once
again accredited in the year 2006.
In 2006, the college received funding to the tune of Rs. 9 crores
from a World Bank Scheme - Technical Quality Improvement
Program (TEQIP). This was the only self financed engineering
college among 16 colleges of Karnataka, to receive this
prestigious grant. With this, the college could procure more
sophisticated instruments to better the knowledge transfer
process. There was ample scope for the faculty development
under the scheme and it was made use of more effectively.
Very next year the college was granted academic autonomous
status by VTU and was approved by AICTE and UGC. This gave
the freedom of revising the curriculum more frequently and
scope for adding more recent developments in the field. The
scheme gave a considerable freedom to the students to select
the courses of their choice at any level. This has attracted
appreciation from all the stakeholders viz. students, parents

relative grading system which is
the practice in most part of the
world.
The library has grown into a full
fledged Knowledge Center with
access to a wide variety of
national and international
magazines both in print and
digital form. A spacious reading
room provides peaceful atmosphere to the students for serious
studies.
The placement cell is very active. Nearly 50 – 60 companies visit
the college and recruit our students every year. The placement
record is quite encouraging. Last year 90 % of the eligible
students were recruited.
Human relationships gain a top priority among the faculty, staff
and students. There is a very cordial relationship between
faculty and students. The students freely contact the faculty for
doubts and get clarifications.
In addition to the excellent teaching, the college provides
sufficient scope for the overall development of students. The
bodies like Students Academic Body (SAB) and Students
Academic Council (SAC) look after the student grooming
activities and welfare measures. Centre for Industry Institute
Interface (CIII), value additions, Skills and Training centre (VAST
– C), ISTE students Chapter, IETE chapter, Computer society of
India take care of the co curricular activities. The students are
encouraged to participate in conferences and present papers. In
2009 – 2010, two students presented paper in an international
conference in China and received a lot of appreciation for their
novel idea.
Three hostels for boys and two hostels for girls with single
seated, two seated and three seated occupancy provide a
homely atmosphere to the inmates. The inmates enjoy
uninterrupted electric supply system, 24 hours water supply
and other facilities in the hostel.
Other amenities include internet facility (10Mbps leased line
with WiFi), Cultural activity cell, a big playground and sports
section with all facilities, Bank and Post Office, co-operative
society, fully furnished auditorium with a seating capacity of
800, air conditioned mini auditorium, seminar halls, central
dining facility, indoor games facility, canteen, fast food centre
etc. Transportation facility is provided to the students through
6 buses.
In spite of all these, the management and the staff continuously
express their desire to improve further and are always trying to
find ways to achieve the excellence. There is no hesitation in
saying that with the blessings of Lord Manjunatheshwara and
Rev. President, the college will grow further and will soon
become a centre of excellence in future.
