Sri S.S. Inamdar HOD, Chemical Engg.
The Dept. of Chemical Engg. at SDMCET, was established in
the year 1995, approved by AICTE, New Delhi with a
sanctioned intake of 40 seats, affiliated to Visvesvaraya
Technological University, Belgaum and accredited by the NBA
New Delhi.
Chemical Engg. at SDMCET Dharwad, has been consistently
striving hard since inception to reach the status of eminence
and excellence at all the fronts. This is perhaps due to the
consistent efforts of our faculty who are highly qualified, rich
in experience, committed and dedicated. In this era of
competence, our faculty expertise is always on the anvil to
groom and augment the students to excel in academics,
develop personality, creativity, cultivate positive attitude
with professional ethics and above all self reliance by
adopting the core curriculum and good practices that meet
the expectations of the outside world. Academic care is given
top priority in the form of mentorship. Perhaps it is reflected
in the results which are cent percent every year with some
ranks to the University. Blessed with adequate
infrastructure, the department has well equipped
laboratories in all the courses indeed furnished with the
equipments and instruments that range from conventional
to highly sophisticated ones. Most of the faculties have
registered for PhD at the prestigious NIT-K Surathkal and this
signifies the instinct for research and development. The
department has an association, called Chemical Engg.
Association and under the banner of which number of
activities benefiting the students are taken up. Industrial
visits are arranged every semester. MCF Mangalore, MRPL
Mangalore, Solaris Karwar, Grasim Industries Harihar, United
Breweries Goa, Gluco Biols (Glaxo) Gokak to list a few are the
industries visited. Students are sent for Training to the
Industries during vacation period and get the projects
sponsored by the industries and certain organizations like
KSCST Bangalore, Nerolac Paints Ghaziabad etc. In addition
to academics, our faculty is engaged in Testing and
Consultancy services. Testing of soil, sand, cement,
aggregate, ambient air, stack monitoring for the nearby
industries are taken up. The testing facilities in the
department are recognized by the Pollution Control Board.
Our Faculty are participating in conferences, symposia,
workshops etc. One of our faculties has visited San Francisco
U.S. to present a paper. Publication of books and papers by
the faculty in the International and National Journals have
been successfully practiced. There are six supporting staff
with different designations. The dept. is always agile in
organizing and conducting the symposiums or meets
invariably once in a year. To list a few, it organized “Energy
Sustenance towards a Better Environment” in the year 2009
during which speakers from Reliance Innovations Pune, Shell
Bangalore, IISc, Bangalore, NIT-K Surathkal etc. were invited.
An International Colloquium on “Nanotechnology: a gateway
to a promising future” in the year 2008 was organized in which
eminent personalities from U.S.A were invited as Resource
persons. A three day National Level workshop on “Risk & Safety
Management in Process Industries” was conducted in 2006.
Department has imparted training to sugar industry employees
sponsored by Karnataka Sugar Institute (KSI). Students are
encouraged and trained to face the competitive exams like
GATE, CAT, GRE etc. Our Alumni are well placed through On
campus and Off campus placements in the organizations like
GE Bangalore, Biocon B'lore, Shantha Biotech Hyderabad,
Honeywell B'lore, Toyota B'lore, Seimens B'lore Tata
Chemicals Ltd. Pune, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Hyderabad,
MCF Mangalore, MRPL Mangalore, Grasim Industries HPF
Harihar, Jindal Vijayanagar Steels Hospet, Reliance Jamnagar,
Gujarat, Sartorius Bangalore, Invensys Development Center
Hyderabad, JK Cements Rajasthan, Jacobs Engineering
Mumbai, Hindustan Lever Ltd. Bangalore etc.
Our students have performed exceedingly well in
Competitions / workshops held at IIT Bombay, NIT Trichy,
Osmania University Hyderabad, GEC Thrissur, NIT-K Surathkal,
BIET Davangere etc. Our aspirations stand tall and we do
accept challenges to take the department to the top. We aspire
to have faculty sharing with industry i.e. spend sabbaticals in
industry and industry experts in academics so that a strong
communiqué and relation is built between us. The department
has plans for taking further challenges in R&D/Consultancy, to
start PG programme in Chemical Engg, create Centre of
Excellence in Chemical/Biochemical Engg., to have a MoU with
National and International Institutions/organizations, total
placements (on campus) and serve the community and society
at large to the maximum.
Our firm belief is that, if the academia would stop looking down
upon the industry and vice versa, almost anything is possible.
