M.Tech (Engineering Analysis and Design)
The aim of the undergraduate programme in Mechanical
Engineering at SDMCET is to prepare students for research
and professional practice in an era of rapidly advancing
interdisciplinary technology. The programme builds on the
core curriculum to combine individual depth of experience
and competence in a particular chosen Mechanical
engineering specialty with a strong background in the basic
and engineering science.
It maintains a balance between classroom lectures and
laboratory and design experience and emphasizes the
problem formulation and solving skills. The programme also
strives to develop in each student self reliance, creativity,
leadership, professional ethics and the capability for
continuing professional and intellectual growth.
Departmental composition
The department comprises of 11 Professors, 7 Assistant
Professors and 11 Lecturers. The department is actively
engaged in pursuing doctoral status to its faculty members.
The department is ably assisted with an impressive list of 25
well qualified supporting staff with various designations.
Educational programmes
Started in the year 1979 and one of the largest departments
with an intake of 120 students for B.E degree course and 18
students for M.Tech in “Engineering Analysis and Design”
course
Major facilities
The department has state of art lab facility catering to the
complete requirements of syllabi, wind tunnel of 1 sq-mt test
section, department CAD facility with latest softwares CATIA
V5 R16 ED2, Fluent, Altair Hyperworks 7.0 HP xw4300
Workstations etc. The workshop facilities include State of the
art CNC (Surya VF 30), surface grinding machines, Enterprise
1330 lathes and many other facilities. The Department has
Library with about 866 books for ready reference.
Noteworthy accomplishments
The faculty are constantly engaged in paper publications
conferences & seminars .The faculty pursuing higher studies
are good in number. Our M.Tech students have made good
achievements with the first three ranks in the past. Faculty
achievements also include research and development ,
projects under MODROB, TERI ,AICTE (TAPTEC) ,PERI Urban
Interface Studies on Integrated water management strategies
for semi arid regions of North Karnataka under AICTE
(TAPTEC) ,Effect of Free Stream Turbulence an DST Ongoing
In collaboration with experts from IIT Delhi & NGO. Third
party certification for Hubli-Dharwad Municipal corporation
Consultancy & Testing Assignments are also Undertaken by
the Department.
Other notable activities include industry agreements : MOU
with INFOSYS on Campus Connect Program . Students from
Mechanical Engineering trained and certified on IT
foundation course under Campus connect at SDMCET .Two
faculty trained at INFOSYS Leadership Institute, Mysore, on,
“Train the Trainer” program for developing soft skills. Social
commitment include -about 90 Jail inmates of DHARWAD
CENTRAL JAIL were trained in carpentry and welding (Feb
2009). Value added programs are being conducted such as
FEA Workshop: For M.Tech students (Dec-08 to Feb 09) TEQIP
funded . Workshop on Innovative product development and
design was also conducted. Good Rating of Teacher, Research
Guidance at the Departmental Level, Oral Presentations in
Conferences, Symposia, Workshops, Invited Lectures, Trips
abroad by Faculty for academic purposes, External
Recognitions, Contribution to Central Administration,
Students Achievements at National Conference & State level
Technical Paper Presentation and many more are some
noteworthy accomplishments.
Future Plans
The department with its experienced faculty & good
infrastructure looks forward to establish and ensure
continually an adaptive ,robust and interactive learning & to
strive for imparting quality education with modern technical
tools & Techniques to cater to the expectations of its stake
holders & peers.
