First-ever bicycle brand joins Melbourne’s Australian Motorcycle Expo
KTM Bike Industries Australia has signed on as the first ever
bicycle brand to exhibit at the Australian Motorcycle Expo.
The leading bicycle brand in Austria, KTM Bikes officially
hit the Australian market in 2011 and will
exhibit at the event for the first time at the
Melbourne Convention and Exhibition
Centre from November 23 to 25.
The relevant crossover of road and
off-road motorcyclists who actively train

School’s in for Yamaha P&A specialists
Yamaha Motor Australia recently held its
inaugural Yamaha Parts & Accessories
Academy Introductory Course in
Brisbane. The Academy’s main focus is
improving the knowledge and skills of
all Yamaha dealership parts interpreters,
as well as helping such staff to achieve
a sound knowledge of Yamaha Parts &
Accessories Division operating systems.
The Yamaha Parts & Accessories
Academy is a Yamaha Motor Company
Japan initiative aimed at the Yamaha
dealership parts team occupational
roles, including parts management,
parts interpreting and administration.
Three students in particular excelled
at the inaugural Yamaha Parts &
Accessories Academy: Matthew Walsh
of Coast Yamaha (SA); Mark Wallace of
Peter Stevens Geelong (Vic); and Daniel
Australia’s peak body for the automotive industry, the Federal
Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), together with the
Australian All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) industry, comprising the
leading distributors, have today called for proposals for the use of
rollover devices on ATVs to be rejected.
Reports released recently by Dynamic Research Inc. (DRI), an
internationally recognised firm specialising in applied research in
the areas of vehicle dynamics and controls, simulator technology
and accident investigation, confirmed that Rollover Protection
Systems (ROPS) and Crush Protective Devices (CPDs) on ATVs
can cause unacceptably high levels of harm in comparison to
their benefits.
Updated research into one type of locally-produced CPD
found that it caused more harm than it prevented in the sample of
overturns examined, regardless of whether a helmet was worn.
Cameron Cuthill, FCAI Motorcycle Manager, said “The ATV
industry will continue to put the safety of riders first by opposing
the use of rollover devices in Australia.
“The findings of the DRI research report cannot be disputed.
The research is state-of-technology and is based upon published
research and relevant portions of international research
standards, as expected of a quality report. It confirms that rollover
devices, and in particular so-called ‘crush protective devices’,
should not be fitted to ATVs,” he said.
The ATV industry is highly concerned that recent calls by
certain interest groups for rollover devices to be mandated is
based on flawed logic, misinformation and research which does
not adhere to relevant international standards.
Mr Cuthill noted “Studies conducted in Australia attempting to
make a case for CPDs are very limited, don’t follow international
standards, and have not involved any practical tests undertaken
with injury-monitoring crash dummies to verify the validity of the
assumptions upon which they rely.”

ATV industry opposes rollover devices on safety grounds
The ATV industry urges all stakeholders and commentators to
carefully review the findings of the DRI report, which can be found
at http://www.dri-atv-rops-research.com/ and, in light of those
findings, to reconsider the claims made by suppliers of CPDs,
and by their supporters.
The DRI research included refinements to ATV accident
scenario simulations to specifically address previous concerns
raised by local interest groups.
Across more than 1500 computer simulations conducted for
helmeted riders, a locally produced CPD product was found
to have, on average, injury and fatality risks that exceeded
its potential benefits. When extended to all overturns that
might occur, the new research indicated the CPD would
cause approximately as many injuries for helmeted riders as it
prevented.
For un-helmeted riders on an ATV fitted with the same
device, the respective injury and fatality risk/benefit percentages
indicated that the device would cause significantly more injuries
and fatalities than it would prevent.
The ATV industry will continue to push for safety interventions
with known positive benefits.
All ATV riders should be appropriately trained to operate the
vehicle, always wear a helmet, not carry more than the approved
number of passengers, and only use the vehicle for its intended
purposes. Children under 16 years of age should never be
allowed on an adult-sized ATV.
“ATVs are not toys and should not be treated as such,” said Mr
Cuthill.
“Unfortunately, while the focus remains on rollover devices,
real solutions will continue to be ignored. Attention should
instead be maintained on helmet use, training and keeping
children off full-size ATVs.”

The Mustang is characterised by its compact dimensions,

Sherco ups the ante
Sherco has just released details of its ST2013 2.9 trials bike,
which it says has received a number of updates, refinements
and improvements, as has the entire 2013 Sherco trials bike
range.
The 2.9’s new look sees it maintain Sherco’s corporate
colours of blue and yellow, but the latter has assumed a more
prominent position, giving more colour to the chassis, with the
addition of various decorative details.
Meanwhile, numerous evolutions have taken place in the
engine. Outward changes include the ergonomic new design of
the kick-start lever and the gearshift lever. The right side of the
crankcase has been redesigned as has the skidplate, in order to
provide greater protection to the underside of the engine.
A new carburettor setup plus an adjustment to the
thermodynamics of the cylinder have increased engine
performance. The clutch has also received some minor
improvements, such as the inclusion of an additional radial
bearing to more effectively transfer power from the engine.
The chassis has been thoroughly tested, analyzed and
modified. This revision has produced a frame that has greater
rigidity and stability and allows the rider to face any obstacle
with a greater degree of confidence. The suspension units have
also been updated, while the aluminium forged footpegs are
now adjustable.
The ST2013 models are equipped with the new Formula
brake kit that has been perfected to permit smooth movement
of the lever in any position, maintaining the pressure and force

Pirelli expands Scorpion Rally range
Pirelli has introduced new 110/80-19 and 150/70-
17 sizes to its Scorpion Rally range of tyres, to
suit larger-displacement adventure bikes like the
BMW R 1200 GS and Yamaha XTZ1200 Super
Ténéré.
Pirelli says the new Scorpion Rally sizes have
been designed to guarantee excellent off-road
performance – including better traction and tear
resistance and less wear on the knobs – thanks
to Pirelli’s racing experience with the 90/90-21
and 140/80-18 Scorpion Rally sizes.
Pirelli says the new Scorpion Rally sizes are
also designed to provide high mileage and
excellent road stability, even at high speeds
and fully loaded, while the rear tyre also boasts
better traction while the front capably transmits a
feeling of security.
The tread pattern for the new 110/80-19 front
size maintains the same 4-5-4 layout of the
blocks used on the 90/90-21 size, with a central
prism. The new 7.7mm height of the knobs was
chosen deliberately to optimise handling and
directional stability on sand and soft terrain, and
to increase the life of the tyre.
The 150/70-17 rear size, on the other hand,
has wider blocks with long transversal bridges,
designed to provide better traction on soft terrain
and to reduce slides, so that riders can have full
confidence when leaning into turns.
Stability at high speeds is achieved thanks
to the use of a carcass with thick ply cords
arranged with just the right angling to provide
greater lateral rigidity, which helps to offset the
vibrations which are often associated with large
enduro bikes at high speeds.

When you break it down, there are only
three faults that can occur in a single
wire: a short circuit; an open circuit; or
high resistance.
Imagine you have a wire with all
except one thin strand of copper broken.
Your multimeter will read system voltage
and a test light will glow, but trying to run
a headlight off that is a never going to
work – there’s a potential thief!
We have all been in the position of
testing an electrical circuit and at the
point of phoning the local parts supplier,
but there’s that little voice in the back of
your head that asks ‘Am I right?’.
You have power and earth but no
or poor component operation. And
Murphy’s Law dictates it’s always going
to be that expensive, non-returnable part
when you get caught out.
Measuring voltage and performing
dynamic load tests
is the easiest way
to confidently and
systematically rule
out circuit faults.

Open circuits will be displayed as ghost
voltage (appears as a 0.XX voltage
fluctuating up and down). Ghost voltage
means there is no electrical connection
between the power supply and the earth.
SHORT CIRCUIT
Short circuits will be displayed as zero volts
(appears as a 0.00 volts). Zero volts means
you have a short to earth, i.e. something
copper touching something steel.

SYSTEM VOLTAGE
Reading system voltage means you can
rule out two of the possible three faults:
opens and shorts.
HIGH RESISTANCE
Performing a Dynamic Load Test will
allow you to rule out any abnormal circuit
resistance, usually in the form of a faulty
connector or wiring. Because multimeters
are so sensitive, they will read system
voltage with resistance in the circuit.
Performing a Dynamic Load Test allows
you to rule in or out the third of the three
possible faults, factually solidifying your
diagnosis.

Specialities LoadPro – an easy way to
perform voltage drop tests and ensure
resistive faults can be carried out and
diagnosed with one tool and measurement,
all with your own digital multimeter.

The maker of Plastex plastics repairs kits says the
kits are revolutionary products that make even
difficult repairs quick and easy. It says Plastex is
sandable and paintable, and that these kits can do

The importance of brake fluid
Did you know that a motorcycle’s brake fluid also needs to be
checked and replaced regularly? Many OEMs and maintenance
experts recommend that we replace our brake fluid at least every
two years. If you don’t know why, please read on…
WHAT IS BRAKE FLUID?
Brake fluid is basically a hydraulic fluid that actuates a motorcycle’s
hydraulic brake system when we step on the rear brake pedal
or squeeze the front brake lever. As a fluid that transmits force,
an important property of the brake fluid is that it should be noncompressible
so that it effectively transmits braking force to the
wheels at all times. As brake fluids are exposed to very high
temperatures during braking, these should have very high boiling
points so they remain incompressible, even in extreme braking.
America’s Department of Transportation (DOT) has set the pace
in putting in place a standard for brake fluids. In the industry, we
have adapted two main standards – DOT 3 and DOT 4. There are
other types of brake fluid in use but most motorcycles use either
DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid, so we will stick with these two for the
purposes of this discussion. The table (above right) shows the
boiling point standards. Note that the Australian standard has a
more stringent boiling point requirement than the internationally
accepted American DOT standard. Also note that the Bendix
line of brake fluids conforms to both the DOT standards and the
Australian standards, and in fact they exceed these standards by a
wide margin.

Brake fluid is a glycol-based fluid that remains fluid even when
freezing and remains effective as a hydraulic fluid even at high
temperatures. It is expected to work in freezing winter conditions
and in extremely hot summer months. It is a versatile fluid that does
its job in all temperature extremes. However, brake fluid by nature
absorbs moisture from the atmosphere through the microscopic
pores in brake lines and through the small vent in the reservoir. In
fact brake fluid begins to take in moisture the moment you pour it
into your brake system.
After a year in service, brake fluid would have absorbed about
two per cent water and will have progressed to three per cent water
after only 18 months. These figures would be a lot higher in places
that are humid and wet. Moisture in brake fluid decreases its boiling
point – two per cent water will reduce the brake fluid’s boiling point
by 75°C. The boiling point drop becomes more pronounced as
more moisture is absorbed.

especially during extreme braking conditions
like riding downhill, in stop-start traffic or when
carrying heavy loads. Constant braking transmits
a lot of heat to the brake fluid from the pads
and rotors. If a considerable degree of moisture
were present, these would easily boil off and
form vapour, which is extremely compressible
– this is when the pedal or lever starts feeling spongy and brake
performance is drastically reduced.
This is why brakes can fail even if the braking systems are found
to be mechanically in order. In fact, after the system has cooled
down and the vapour has condensed, braking performance is
restored.
Presence of vapour in the brake fluid also affects the
performance of any anti-lock brake system (ABS). The ABS
pulsates about 15 times a second and the brake fluid’s viscosity
is an important factor for its proper operation. The presence
of moisture and/or vapour in the brake fluid alters its viscosity
characteristics and will result in improper operation of the ABS.
DOT 4 AND DOT 3 BRAKE FLUIDS
From the table (previous page), we can see that the main
difference between DOT 4 and DOT 3 brake fluids is that DOT 4
brake fluids have higher minimum dry and wet boiling points – this
is why the majority of manufacturers recommend DOT 4 brake fluid
over DOT 3, as it provides an extra margin of safety. Both are made
from glycol ethers but DOT 4 brake fluids are added with borate
esters to give them improved dry and wet boiling points. DOT

Often unmentioned is the effect of the
different DOT 4 formulation on the brake fluid
behaviour. DOT 4 absorbs moisture at a slower
rate than DOT 3 but is more susceptible to
suffering a drop in its boiling point. Typically
a DOT 4 brake fluid will suffer a boiling point drop of 50 per cent
once it takes in two per cent moisture while a DOT 3 brake fluid
would only lose 25 per cent of its boiling point at three per cent
moisture contamination, although it takes in moisture at a faster
rate. This suggests that DOT 4 brake fluids offer more stability and
safety for longer, but it needs to be replaced at the recommended
OEM intervals before it suffers a substantial drop in boiling point.

Brake specialist Goodridge Ltd recently launched its ‘Limited
Edition’ Gold Motorcycle brake line kit.
The ‘Limited Edition’ Gold Motorcycle brake line kit is part
of the Shadow range and features gold poly-coated stainless
braided PTFE hoses with black stainless steel hose ends, bolts
and washers. Goodridge says that in addition to providing a
more responsive and firm brake pedal or lever by eliminating the
‘spongy’ feel that often accompanies stock rubber brake lines,
Shadow brake line kits provide Goodridge’s race-bred, long-term
durability, quality and performance.
Goodridge says its brake lines
improve brake feel over factory lines,
eliminate sponginess, and deliver
shorter stopping distances and
consistent braking in performance
applications. The shorter stopping
distances and improved response
provide safety as well as performance
advantages.

bolts, screws studs and nuts that require removal - (ie semi
permanent) medium strength.
1305 Stud lock and seal – permanent high strength.
1342 Screw lock and seal – low strength removable.
6601J Engine conditioner - cleans combustion chambers throttle bodies
on bikes and other engines. Able to use 1 can (240ml) on two bikes.
