School’s in for Yamaha P&A specialists
Yamaha Motor Australia recently held its
inaugural Yamaha Parts & Accessories
Academy Introductory Course in
Brisbane. The Academy’s main focus is
improving the knowledge and skills of
all Yamaha dealership parts interpreters,
as well as helping such staff to achieve
a sound knowledge of Yamaha Parts &
Accessories Division operating systems.
The Yamaha Parts & Accessories
Academy is a Yamaha Motor Company
Japan initiative aimed at the Yamaha
dealership parts team occupational
roles, including parts management,
parts interpreting and administration.
Three students in particular excelled
at the inaugural Yamaha Parts &
Accessories Academy: Matthew Walsh
of Coast Yamaha (SA); Mark Wallace of
Peter Stevens Geelong (Vic); and Daniel
Australia’s peak body for the automotive industry, the Federal
Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), together with the
Australian All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) industry, comprising the
leading distributors, have today called for proposals for the use of
rollover devices on ATVs to be rejected.
Reports released recently by Dynamic Research Inc. (DRI), an
internationally recognised firm specialising in applied research in
the areas of vehicle dynamics and controls, simulator technology
and accident investigation, confirmed that Rollover Protection
Systems (ROPS) and Crush Protective Devices (CPDs) on ATVs
can cause unacceptably high levels of harm in comparison to
their benefits.
Updated research into one type of locally-produced CPD
found that it caused more harm than it prevented in the sample of
overturns examined, regardless of whether a helmet was worn.
Cameron Cuthill, FCAI Motorcycle Manager, said “The ATV
industry will continue to put the safety of riders first by opposing
the use of rollover devices in Australia.
“The findings of the DRI research report cannot be disputed.
The research is state-of-technology and is based upon published
research and relevant portions of international research
standards, as expected of a quality report. It confirms that rollover
devices, and in particular so-called ‘crush protective devices’,
should not be fitted to ATVs,” he said.
The ATV industry is highly concerned that recent calls by
certain interest groups for rollover devices to be mandated is
based on flawed logic, misinformation and research which does
not adhere to relevant international standards.
Mr Cuthill noted “Studies conducted in Australia attempting to
make a case for CPDs are very limited, don’t follow international
standards, and have not involved any practical tests undertaken
with injury-monitoring crash dummies to verify the validity of the
assumptions upon which they rely.”
Argent of Yamaha World (SA).
Yamaha Motor Australia says it will
continue to work with its dealer network
with further introductory and advanced
Yamaha Parts & Accessories Academy
courses, which will help lift the level of
service provided by the Yamaha dealer
network.
Yamaha World – Daniel Argent
Coast Yamaha – Matthew Walsh
ATV industry opposes rollover devices on safety grounds
The ATV industry urges all stakeholders and commentators to
carefully review the findings of the DRI report, which can be found
at http://www.dri-atv-rops-research.com/ and, in light of those
findings, to reconsider the claims made by suppliers of CPDs,
and by their supporters.
The DRI research included refinements to ATV accident
scenario simulations to specifically address previous concerns
raised by local interest groups.
Across more than 1500 computer simulations conducted for
helmeted riders, a locally produced CPD product was found
to have, on average, injury and fatality risks that exceeded
its potential benefits. When extended to all overturns that
might occur, the new research indicated the CPD would
cause approximately as many injuries for helmeted riders as it
prevented.
For un-helmeted riders on an ATV fitted with the same
device, the respective injury and fatality risk/benefit percentages
indicated that the device would cause significantly more injuries
and fatalities than it would prevent.
The ATV industry will continue to push for safety interventions
with known positive benefits.
All ATV riders should be appropriately trained to operate the
vehicle, always wear a helmet, not carry more than the approved
number of passengers, and only use the vehicle for its intended
purposes. Children under 16 years of age should never be
allowed on an adult-sized ATV.
“ATVs are not toys and should not be treated as such,” said Mr
Cuthill.
“Unfortunately, while the focus remains on rollover devices,
real solutions will continue to be ignored. Attention should
instead be maintained on helmet use, training and keeping
children off full-size ATVs.”
Evopos Instant Expert for motorcycles
The concept of Evopos’s Instant Expert software is quite
simply to turn anyone in the motorcycle industry into an
‘Instant Expert’.
Evopos says Instant Expert is an easy-to-use software
application that is available free of charge to users of the
Evopos Dealer Management System. It gives instant access to
model information, model history, identification data, technical
data and application data for thousands of motorcycles.
Obviously some of this information can already be accessed
from varying different sources such as manufacturers,
manuals, application books and subscriptions, but Evopos
says Instant Expert brings it all together in a single intuitive
way that is easy and quick to access.
Instant Expert is ‘community’ driven, which means the
whole community of users help to contribute new information
and verify data. This ensures the already massive source of
data is kept up to date and accurate. Users earn points by
adding or confirming data. They can use their points to gain
access to the more advanced features such as publishing
details of their models, or parts for that model that they have
in stock. This is a great way to increase sales and clear
redundant stock.
The software is arranged by model families, so you can see
the full history of a model and easily identify model variance
if you need to. Data for various model variances that are the
same are combined together to give a much simpler view and
Stick ’em up!
Ringmaster Images can supply stickers and decals to suit all
sorts of applications. In its Universal Dealer Sheets the shape
and size of each sticker on the sheet has been measured
against all models of bikes (from 50cc right up to the senior
models) to ensure you get maximum usage out of the stickers
no matter what bike(s) they need to be stuck on. Choose from
four standard designs with any combination of colours to suit
your needs or get your own design custom made. Ringmaster
says one sheet can be used for multiple applications and goes
a long way.
Ringmaster Images also produces suspension decals, and
says that if you’re in the suspension business then this is the
place to advertise. Choose from standard ‘side only’ stickers or
more practical ‘wrap-around’ stickers to protect the forks from
roost. Wrap-around stickers allow for maximum coverage with
a main logo on the side of fork, and another logo if required
on the front. Record all the vital settings where they are easily
viewed and won’t get lost. Provide Ringmaster with the settings
list and the logo your business requires on the sticker and it
will produce blanks for the end user to fill in settings where
needed. Use a permanent marker to record and wipe off with a
spirit-soaked rag to re-use the same sticker. Otherwise simply
display your company’s logo and contact details.
Ringmaster Images says its Curved Front Guard Stickers
are most cost-effective way to advertise your company name
on floor stock, serviced or sponsored bikes etc. From one pair
to thousands of pairs, Ringmaster Images can accommodate
your needs for junior, intermediate and senior bikes.

These stickers are available as ‘contour cut’ to the shape
of your specific logo without any setup costs, or choose from
Oz Trikes unveils stunning Boom Trikes Mustang ST1
Oz Trikes has just unveiled the new Mustang ST1 trike, a
Boom Trikes product it describes as “the newest and the best
trike on the global market”.
The Mustang is characterised by its compact dimensions,
and Oz Trikes says it’s also nimble and agile, thanks in part
to the company’s own independent
suspension, with aluminium trailing
arms and continuously adjustable shock
absorbers.
The tubular frame was constructed
using state-of-the-art CNC tube bending
technology, which has made some
highly complicated structures fit the
contours of the trike perfectly. The
package is finished off with a polished
stainless steel exhaust system.
Powered by a fuel-injected fourcylinder
engine from Ford, Oz Trikes
says more than 150Nm of torque is
available at just 1500rpm, while the unit
is ticking over at just 2000rpm at
100km/h. The torque increases to
168Nm at 4300rpm, and Oz Trikes says
there’s ample grunt available throughout
the rev range.
Oz Trikes says the Mustang
consumes just 6lt of fuel per 100km, and
Sherco ups the ante
Sherco has just released details of its ST2013 2.9 trials bike,
which it says has received a number of updates, refinements
and improvements, as has the entire 2013 Sherco trials bike
range.
The 2.9’s new look sees it maintain Sherco’s corporate
colours of blue and yellow, but the latter has assumed a more
prominent position, giving more colour to the chassis, with the
addition of various decorative details.
Meanwhile, numerous evolutions have taken place in the
engine. Outward changes include the ergonomic new design of
the kick-start lever and the gearshift lever. The right side of the
crankcase has been redesigned as has the skidplate, in order to
provide greater protection to the underside of the engine.
A new carburettor setup plus an adjustment to the
thermodynamics of the cylinder have increased engine
performance. The clutch has also received some minor
improvements, such as the inclusion of an additional radial
bearing to more effectively transfer power from the engine.
The chassis has been thoroughly tested, analyzed and
modified. This revision has produced a frame that has greater
rigidity and stability and allows the rider to face any obstacle
with a greater degree of confidence. The suspension units have
also been updated, while the aluminium forged footpegs are
now adjustable.
The ST2013 models are equipped with the new Formula
brake kit that has been perfected to permit smooth movement
of the lever in any position, maintaining the pressure and force
necessary for effective brake operation. Sherco says this new
Insure your fuel
Petrol begins to deteriorate in as little as 60 days
– even faster for higher-octane fuels – but Trico says
STA-BIL Fuel Stabiliser keeps fuel fresh for up to 12
months and stops the formation of gum and varnish
deposits on fuel system components, keeping the fuel
and the engine ready for the next ride.
Running stale or contaminated petrol through an
engine can result in difficult starting and reduced
performance.
Trico says STA-BIL surrounds ‘good’ fuel molecules
with a coating so oxygen can’t break down the fuel
molecules into ‘bad’ gum and varnish. When adding
STA-BIL to fresh fuel, it is important to run the engine
for up to five minutes so that it can treat the fuel in the
entire fuel system, not just the fuel tank.
Pirelli expands Scorpion Rally range
Pirelli has introduced new 110/80-19 and 150/70-
17 sizes to its Scorpion Rally range of tyres, to
suit larger-displacement adventure bikes like the
BMW R 1200 GS and Yamaha XTZ1200 Super
Ténéré.
Pirelli says the new Scorpion Rally sizes have
been designed to guarantee excellent off-road
performance – including better traction and tear
resistance and less wear on the knobs – thanks
to Pirelli’s racing experience with the 90/90-21
and 140/80-18 Scorpion Rally sizes.
Pirelli says the new Scorpion Rally sizes are
also designed to provide high mileage and
excellent road stability, even at high speeds
and fully loaded, while the rear tyre also boasts
better traction while the front capably transmits a
feeling of security.
The tread pattern for the new 110/80-19 front
size maintains the same 4-5-4 layout of the
blocks used on the 90/90-21 size, with a central
prism. The new 7.7mm height of the knobs was
chosen deliberately to optimise handling and
directional stability on sand and soft terrain, and
to increase the life of the tyre.
The 150/70-17 rear size, on the other hand,
has wider blocks with long transversal bridges,
designed to provide better traction on soft terrain
and to reduce slides, so that riders can have full
confidence when leaning into turns.
Stability at high speeds is achieved thanks
to the use of a carcass with thick ply cords
arranged with just the right angling to provide
greater lateral rigidity, which helps to offset the
vibrations which are often associated with large
enduro bikes at high speeds.
Pirelli says great effort was also made
regarding mileage: the Scorpion Rally now offers
increased durability and more even wear.
Give ’em a blast!
Australian Motorcycle Components has
announced it recently took delivery of
a shipment of Bad Boy Compact Air
Horns.
Available in black or chrome, AMC
says these are the smallest, loudest
compact air horns available, and
that they feature the latest in air horn
technology.
According to AMC the one-piece
design requires no hoses and
is installed in minutes by simply
transferring the factory horn wires to the
compressor. The air horn mounts with
one bolt that is included in the kit.
AMC says Bad Boy Compact Air
Horns produce a powerful dual-tone
sound that is approximately twice as
loud as a standard factory horn, while
the unit itself is compact enough to
fit any car, truck or motorcycle. It also
says the heavy-duty, maintenancefree
When you break it down, there are only
three faults that can occur in a single
wire: a short circuit; an open circuit; or
high resistance.
Imagine you have a wire with all
except one thin strand of copper broken.
Your multimeter will read system voltage
and a test light will glow, but trying to run
a headlight off that is a never going to
work – there’s a potential thief!
We have all been in the position of
testing an electrical circuit and at the
point of phoning the local parts supplier,
but there’s that little voice in the back of
your head that asks ‘Am I right?’.
You have power and earth but no
or poor component operation. And
Murphy’s Law dictates it’s always going
to be that expensive, non-returnable part
when you get caught out.
Measuring voltage and performing
dynamic load tests
is the easiest way
to confidently and
systematically rule
out circuit faults.
Measuring
resistance using
your multimeter
requires you to
disconnect the
circuit components
and make a
prediction: is this
resistance okay?
By measuring
voltage you
can perform accurate tests from one
connection quickly and accurately. And
by carrying out a load test, you can
eliminate all three potential faults at once.
PΩtential thieves
Hunting down a loss of power… By Dayle Thomas of OLCT
OPEN CIRCUIT
Open circuits will be displayed as ghost
voltage (appears as a 0.XX voltage
fluctuating up and down). Ghost voltage
means there is no electrical connection
between the power supply and the earth.
SHORT CIRCUIT
Short circuits will be displayed as zero volts
(appears as a 0.00 volts). Zero volts means
you have a short to earth, i.e. something
copper touching something steel.
servicing
SYSTEM VOLTAGE
Reading system voltage means you can
rule out two of the possible three faults:
opens and shorts.
HIGH RESISTANCE
Performing a Dynamic Load Test will
allow you to rule out any abnormal circuit
resistance, usually in the form of a faulty
connector or wiring. Because multimeters
are so sensitive, they will read system
voltage with resistance in the circuit.
Performing a Dynamic Load Test allows
you to rule in or out the third of the three
possible faults, factually solidifying your
diagnosis.
In this tutorial we used the Electronic
Specialities LoadPro – an easy way to
perform voltage drop tests and ensure
resistive faults can be carried out and
diagnosed with one tool and measurement,
all with your own digital multimeter.
standard of performance for general-purpose industrial hand
protection.
“A breathable, high-abrasion resistant palm coating
formulation gives superior mechanical wear and tear
performance and a new-generation liner provides the wearer
with a ‘second skin’ level of comfort,” he said.
“The HyFlex 11-820 addresses the problems of worn
coatings and dirty liners workers often experience with their
conventional gloves. The dark blue ‘second skin’ Spandex liner
hides dirt and offers a snug, comfortable all-shift fit.
“Ansell’s Nitrile long-life coating formulation is designed to
excel when the glove is used in applications where abrasion
resistance is a priority,” he added.
Comfort is also enhanced by an additional knitting process
that drops down the little finger. With the upper palm portion
below the middle three fingers knitted separately from the rest
of the palm, and the little finger joint mounted lower than the
rest, independent movements are enhanced, resulting in a
better fit.
Further convenience for users is an ‘extra comfort’ cuff,
which means the glove can be pulled on and off more easily.
The plastic factory in a bottle
The maker of Plastex plastics repairs kits says the
kits are revolutionary products that make even
difficult repairs quick and easy. It says Plastex is
sandable and paintable, and that these kits can do
what glues and adhesives can’t.
It says Plastex easily glues, fills gaps, repairs
stripped threads and can remake tabs or small
parts in just minutes. Plastex kits have a re-useable
moulding bar that gives customers the ability to
repair or reproduce almost any plastic part quickly
and easily.
Plastex is a powder and a liquid which, when
mixed together, actually becomes a plastic.
The maker says it’s extremely easy to use and
has no mixing ratio. Plastex dries in about 20
minutes, although it should sit for one hour before
being put to use or painted, and it does not have
a shelf life when stored out of direct sunlight and
high heat.
Every Plastex kit comes with an instructional
video CD, which demonstrates all the various
methods of applying Plastex.
Plastex kits are available in a range of sizes,
from small kits to large shop kits.
Motobatt: on the charge
Motobatt batteries and battery chargers are now available
nationally from Birdman Motorcycle Accessories (BMA). BMA
says Motobatt has fast grown in reputation as an excellent
value-for-money choice for the discerning motorcyclist, and the
retailer.
Motobatt vastly reduces the inventory required to service the
industry, while also increasing sales opportunities. This allows
Motobatt stockists to service the requirements of any customer
on the spot with a “ready to go” battery solution – no waiting to
charge the battery or having to fill it with acid.
New for this season is Motobatt’s MBTX20UHD, specifically
designed for the Harley-Davidson cruiser market. An increased
capacity design of 310CCA and 21Ah, BMA says this model is
ideal for Harleys and other demanding cruiser applications.
With a black case the model offers a more subtle look in the
V-twin cruiser market, where the battery can be seen.
BMS says the densely-packed lead plates are cushioned
between AGM separators that ensure vibration resistance
and long life, eliminating a common problem in high-capacity
cruisers.
The MBTX20UHD is also supplied with two different terminal
connectors, for models where the battery cables sit forward of
the battery to provide a positive connection. This model can
also be used on most watercraft or any application where high
initial cranking and fast recovery are an advantage.
The importance of brake fluid
Did you know that a motorcycle’s brake fluid also needs to be
checked and replaced regularly? Many OEMs and maintenance
experts recommend that we replace our brake fluid at least every
two years. If you don’t know why, please read on…
WHAT IS BRAKE FLUID?
Brake fluid is basically a hydraulic fluid that actuates a motorcycle’s
hydraulic brake system when we step on the rear brake pedal
or squeeze the front brake lever. As a fluid that transmits force,
an important property of the brake fluid is that it should be noncompressible
so that it effectively transmits braking force to the
wheels at all times. As brake fluids are exposed to very high
temperatures during braking, these should have very high boiling
points so they remain incompressible, even in extreme braking.
America’s Department of Transportation (DOT) has set the pace
in putting in place a standard for brake fluids. In the industry, we
have adapted two main standards – DOT 3 and DOT 4. There are
other types of brake fluid in use but most motorcycles use either
DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid, so we will stick with these two for the
purposes of this discussion. The table (above right) shows the
boiling point standards. Note that the Australian standard has a
more stringent boiling point requirement than the internationally
accepted American DOT standard. Also note that the Bendix
line of brake fluids conforms to both the DOT standards and the
Australian standards, and in fact they exceed these standards by a
wide margin.
Brake fluid is a glycol-based fluid that remains fluid even when
freezing and remains effective as a hydraulic fluid even at high
temperatures. It is expected to work in freezing winter conditions
and in extremely hot summer months. It is a versatile fluid that does
its job in all temperature extremes. However, brake fluid by nature
absorbs moisture from the atmosphere through the microscopic
pores in brake lines and through the small vent in the reservoir. In
fact brake fluid begins to take in moisture the moment you pour it
into your brake system.
After a year in service, brake fluid would have absorbed about
two per cent water and will have progressed to three per cent water
after only 18 months. These figures would be a lot higher in places
that are humid and wet. Moisture in brake fluid decreases its boiling
point – two per cent water will reduce the brake fluid’s boiling point
by 75°C. The boiling point drop becomes more pronounced as
more moisture is absorbed.
Moisture contamination heightens the risk of brake failure,
especially during extreme braking conditions
like riding downhill, in stop-start traffic or when
carrying heavy loads. Constant braking transmits
a lot of heat to the brake fluid from the pads
and rotors. If a considerable degree of moisture
were present, these would easily boil off and
form vapour, which is extremely compressible
– this is when the pedal or lever starts feeling spongy and brake
performance is drastically reduced.
This is why brakes can fail even if the braking systems are found
to be mechanically in order. In fact, after the system has cooled
down and the vapour has condensed, braking performance is
restored.
Presence of vapour in the brake fluid also affects the
performance of any anti-lock brake system (ABS). The ABS
pulsates about 15 times a second and the brake fluid’s viscosity
is an important factor for its proper operation. The presence
of moisture and/or vapour in the brake fluid alters its viscosity
characteristics and will result in improper operation of the ABS.
DOT 4 AND DOT 3 BRAKE FLUIDS
From the table (previous page), we can see that the main
difference between DOT 4 and DOT 3 brake fluids is that DOT 4
brake fluids have higher minimum dry and wet boiling points – this
is why the majority of manufacturers recommend DOT 4 brake fluid
over DOT 3, as it provides an extra margin of safety. Both are made
from glycol ethers but DOT 4 brake fluids are added with borate
esters to give them improved dry and wet boiling points. DOT
4 maximum viscosity specifications are also
slightly higher than that of DOT 3.
Often unmentioned is the effect of the
different DOT 4 formulation on the brake fluid
behaviour. DOT 4 absorbs moisture at a slower
rate than DOT 3 but is more susceptible to
suffering a drop in its boiling point. Typically
a DOT 4 brake fluid will suffer a boiling point drop of 50 per cent
once it takes in two per cent moisture while a DOT 3 brake fluid
would only lose 25 per cent of its boiling point at three per cent
moisture contamination, although it takes in moisture at a faster
rate. This suggests that DOT 4 brake fluids offer more stability and
safety for longer, but it needs to be replaced at the recommended
OEM intervals before it suffers a substantial drop in boiling point.
Ikon turns back the clock
Ikon has expanded its vintage range of
products with some special shocks to
provide modern damping control to the
infamous ‘jam pot’ set-up as used on
some AJS and Matchless models.
Original looks are maintained
through the re-use of the original
damper bodies and spring covers.
The same type of product has recently
been made for a set of ‘candle stick’
shocks.
Another recent addition aimed at
the classic bike rider are shocks with
covers that give a more traditional
British look. These shocks that look
the part and are adjustable and rebuildable,
and can be made to suit a
variety of old British bikes.
A further new variation on the theme
of black and chrome is the introduction
of shocks with black bodies and
chrome springs, which are now
available in a variety of models.
