will likely be rotating into the attack.
Lawrence believes that this pair of
young guns will provide the energy
the Hawks need while allowing their
starters to rest. Haig, a great shooter
and finisher, should continue to show
improvement as the season progresses
while Guido skills on the offensive end
of the field is a strong advantage.
MIDFIELD
Just like the Hawks’ attack, Lawrence
believes the midfield will thrive off of
a deep rotation of talent, insisting that
as many as eight players will see amplitude
of playing time in the middle
of the field. This year’s midfield unit is
composed of a group of crafty athletes
who can play at both ends of the
field and have the ability to create
offense through transition. In addition,
believes that there will be a constant
competition throughout the spring to
compete for spots in the first two rotations.
Leading that group will be junior Carter
Bender, one of Lawrence’s most talented
middies, who ranked second on
the team with 34 points. With 19 goals
and 15 assists, Bender is one of the
most complete players on the squad
with his exceptional speed and vision,
making first team all-conference and
second team All-New England honors
Sophomore Jared Franze is one of the
young Hawks that opponents need to
keep an eye on. A shifty, offensiveminded
midfielder who was an allconference
second-team selection as
a freshman, Franze netted 19 goals,
including four in his collegiate debut
against UMass. If teams focus too much
on Genik and Bender, look for Franze
to have another outstanding year.
Senior co-captain Michael Cudmore,
one of the best in the conference at
securing ground balls and a workhorse
between the lines, is coming off a solid
season with eight goals and 13 assists
with nine starts. The second-team specialist
will be starting in the face-off
group as well as playing middie, which
calls for the rotation of fresh legs that
Lawrence is planning for the upcoming
season.
Seniors Vinny Pellizzi and Sean King,
as well as junior Austin Rogers, will see
plenty of playing time in the midfield,
especially down the road when potential
injuries and lineup changes occur.
Tate Klidonas, a well-decorated high
school player at Emmaus High School
in Pennsylvania, will also be thrown in
the mix at the midfield position.
In addition, Lawrence expects junior
Martin Bowes to have a break-out
season in 2011. The midfielder has
shown great athleticism and, according
to his coach, has become one of
the best on the squad at shooting and
dodging.
FACE-OFF
The Hawks’ roster boasts an all-conference
performer and All-American
honoree in the key position of face-off
specialists. Tim Fallon, a senior, proved
himself to be one of the top – if not the
best – face-off specialists in the country.
According to the 2010 Division I
statistics, there was not a better player
in the nation at winning offensive possessions
than Fallon. After leading the
nation by winning nearly 62 percent
of his attempts, Fallon returns to handle
the face-offs for Hartford.
Fallon is coming off one of the most
decorated seasons in Hartford history
in which he led the nation in face-off
percentage (.622) and ground balls
(131) while reeling off three goals
and adding four assists en route to becoming
just the second All-American in
