Graduation Issue 2010
A publication for alumni, students, faculty and friends of Mayo School of Health Sciences

On the cover:
New graduates who attended MSHS programs
Sciences; and Jeremy Sharack, Radiography.
Title Being flexible, now
and in the future
as the economy is taking steps toward recovery,
the job market is changing all the time. The
current high unemployment rate is not all doom
and gloom. Work does not disappear during these
times. Those who are prepared to do whatever an
employer needs will have opportunities. However,
it will require a high level of flexibility on the part
of job seekers and new employees.
Some people know from an early age exactly
what they want to do when they hit the work
force. Others have taken different paths before
determining what they wanted to do. Now, you
are there — ready and eager to use that hardearned
degree.
Open your mind to jobs that are off the beaten
path. There may be work environments that you
have not even considered that could become the
path to what you really are
meant to do. Your first job
with your new degree may
not be everything you hoped
for, but it may be a step
closer to your dream job.
There is no way that I
could have predicted that
my career path would have
taken me from being a
junior high school teacher in
Kansas to a physical therapist
in Minnesota. Now, I’m a
hospital administrator in
Nebraska. But what I did was
look for opportunities and
learn from my experiences
and colleagues to determine
my career path.
Be willing to take a risk at this stage in your
career. Consider a classmate of mine: While
most everyone was looking at the safer choice
of working back in their hometown or staying
at Mayo Clinic, he chose to take a chance by
moving to a small town in Idaho. He thought
opportunities might be better there. He didn’t
know it then, but it proved to be the right
choice for him.
Once you’ve secured a position, you must
quickly move from the mindset of student
to employee. Employers may be looking for
employees who are willing to work nights,
weekends, holidays and overtime. They want
workers who can take on added responsibilities
and can see “the big picture” of what the
organization is trying to do. They are looking
for an “us” not a “me” mindset.
You have chosen a career path that will
involve the work you love. Prepare yourself for
the challenges of finding that first job, learning
from it and moving forward. Be flexible and
embrace opportunities for what they are,
steppingstones to your future.
Good luck! C
a look at the highlights
2010 marked the beginning of a new decade and a
host of new milestones and accomplishments for MSHS
and its alumni association
RACE exhibit and diversity
in MSHS
race and how it affects perception, learning
and patient care were top of mind for
students and faculty in 2010.
Mayo Clinic partnered with the rochester
Public Library to host the exhibit: Race: Are we
so Different? tens of thousands of people toured
the exhibit, which wrapped up in September.
MSHS will incorporate learning from the
exhibit into recruitment, curriculum and
teaching. in august, program directors from
all three campuses participated in a day long
look at diversity, race and its significance at
MSHS. Participants almost unanimously said
the program helped them better understand
their own biases and assumptions and better
appreciate cross cultural communication.
The exhibit provided an opportunity for
visitors to reflect on race in their daily
lives through artifacts, historic and
contemporary photography, multimedia
components and interactive experiences.

September 2010.
a new set of competencies were started
with the 2010 class. to meet one of the newest
competencies, each intern completed a research
study and plans to present the research at a
national dietetics meeting in 2011. the interns also
experienced greater management opportunities,
including writing and presenting a business plan.
academic rank is held by 85 percent of the
serve as role models for the interns, and as a
resource after graduation.”
the dedication and expertise of our preceptors
are particularly appreciated by both the dietetic
internship graduates and program director. the
nurse anesthesia — Master’s
Program Update
Recent graduates and current student
registered nurse anesthetists (Srna) continue
to impress program faculty and clinical
instructors with their intelligence and willingness
to do their very best in all situations. their caring
attitude toward their patients and those around
them has been demonstrated many times over.
the students’ compassion has been reflected
in class volunteer projects. the class of 2010
contributed holiday gifts to families in need.
the class of 2011 Srnas and other classmates
participated in the Multiple Sclerosis Walk.
the class of 2012 adopted a portion of olmsted
County Highway 25, near the Historical Society
on Loop 22 (Circle drive).
recently, the core faculty spent time reviewing
required textbooks. Faculty members are finding
that students are using the Web more and more
to access information. Some required resource
textbooks are available online from Mayo Clinic
libraries. in an effort to reduce costs for incoming
students, new Srnas will not be asked to
purchase textbooks available online.
Work continues on the development of
a doctorate of nurse anesthesia Practice
(dnaP) Program, with the summer of 2013
or 2014 as the projected dnaP start date. the
Certified registered nurse anesthesia dnaP
degree Completion Program will then begin
approximately three years later.
as in the past, Srnas excelled in their
academic, research and clinical activities. the
Srnas presented research projects at national
and state meetings and also at the 35th annual
Mayo Clinic Seminar for nurse anesthetists.
the clinical setting continues to stretch students’
abilities and knowledge base as new processes to
deliver anesthesia care are being implemented
via various surgical suite efficiency projects.
With the new processes, patient care remains at
a high level.
all 25 Srnas who graduated in March
have passed their certifying exams and their
total certifying exam score was above the
national average.
The Physical therapy Program received continued accreditation for 10 years from the Commission
on accreditation in Physical therapy Education (CaPtE). after submitting a self-study report
and hosting a three-person on-site review team, the program achieved no citations and received
which physical therapy programs are evaluated. Mayo Clinic’s program in physical therapy was
initially accredited in 1939, making it one of the oldest and longest-accredited physical therapy
programs in the country.
