Reader Contribution As a fairly j u n i o r reporter I tend to get more than my fair share of the least wanted jobs, but I thought I had reached rock bottom when my boss asked me if I could work one particular evening. Having said I could he surprised me with “good, you're going to a meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous”. I confess that I anticipated an evening with a load of middle aged men in fairly soiled clothing taking frequent sips from a variety of nondescript bottles, all unshaven and smelling to high heaven from need of a long overdue bath and babbling incoherently as the contents of the bottles worked the magic or the relief they sought. I envisaged, too, a welldressed, well-groomed, bespectacled social worker trying desperately trying to keep some sort of order. A long evening was on the cards. Approaching the door to the meeting I was assailed by hearty laughter; obviously they had made an early start on the aforementioned bottles! Entering the room I had the first of my surprises. Everyone was well-dressed and as well-groomed as my mythical social worker type had been in my imagination and there were more women than men present. “I'm not an alcoholic”, I stammered, only to be greeted with several cries of “That's OK, we won't hold that against you. Take a seat, and would you like tea or coffee?” Much hand shaking ensued as everyone present introduced themselves by their Christian names amid welcoming smiles and injunctions to just relax and enjoy the meeting. Had I inadvertently ended up in the wrong place? Over the next hour and a half I was to experience something which, if not a life changing encounter, was something very akin to it. Far more important, I could see how such a meeting could be life changing for anyone who had a problem with alcohol. In an aside, and mainly for my benefit, one of the members offered what was a simple, succinct yet inclusive definition of my own, as well as the majority of people's idea of what AA is and is not: “AA is probably the best known organisation on the face of the earth with the least known about it.” My formerly held ideas on AA were rapidly changing and about to undergo an even more drastic re-evaluation. The meeting started with a short reading known as The Preamble, after which one member started to share their experience of “what is was like” (a brief resume of their drinking days), “what happened” (how they came to AA) and “what it is like now” (a short account of how their life had changed). What struck me first was the incredible honesty displayed in this account, which was followed by other 'sharers' in a similar vein. The second striking factor was the healthy perspective the members had managed to gain in relation to their adventures both before and after the cessation of their destructive drinking. Other striking factors were the terrific feeling of fellowship and friendship that pervaded the meeting and the concern shown for a new member whose first meeting happened to coincide with my visit. The members with more sobriety couldn't do enough to make her feel comfortable and to share with her, as they phrase it, their “experience, strength and hope”. I might add, their joy of living. I had never experienced anything quite like it. Something I read once sprang into my mind. Kurt Vonnegut, who as well as being a prolific author was once acknowledged as one of the world's greatest authorities on Comparative Religion was asked “What, in your opinion, is the greatest religion on the face of the earth?” He replied, without hesitation, “Alcoholics Anonymous”. “But AA is not a religion,” said the questioner. “Yes it is,” rebutted Vonnegut, “and AA practises what other religions preach”. From my short experience of the fellowship I couldn't agree more with Vonnegut. The most striking aspect of the whole meeting for me was hearing the incredible difference in the members' lives from “what it was like” to “what it is like now”. Stories of lost driving licences, prison sentences, divorces, living rough – you name it and it had happened to one or more of them. Almost as striking was the variety of ways they had tried to stop drinking once Please be aware that the deadline for all submissions for content and advertising is the 15th of the month for the following month’s print edition. they had reached what they termed their “rock bottom”, the point at which they had for one reason or another decided that they could no longer put up with the trials and tribulations brought on by alcoholic drinking. Medical aid, psychiatric help, religion, meditation, yoga, retreats, counselling, and this list is not exhaustive. The consensus of opinion was that none of them worked. For most, AA was the last desperate resort and there they found that it had worked for over 2,000,000 (Yes, two million) alcoholics worldwide. More important from their point of view, it had worked for them. One thing that will stick with me forever is the intense feeling of camaraderie in that room. Perhaps one reason for that is that AA is not a treatment regime, a club, not even an organisation in the true sense of the word: it is a FELLOWSHIP. A fellowship in which the members share their own, often hard won, experience of what it was like and what it is like now. There are no rules or instructions, just an honest and open sharing of experience of human misery and pain, and a way out of that pain shared by another human being who has been there and done it. Tarte à la Fourme d'Ambert Blue cheese tart Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 40 minutes Ingredients (Serves 8): Flaky pastry (pâte feuilletée) ¼ red, green and orange peppers, sliced 450g Fourme d'Ambert cheese 3 large eggs 300ml/10 fl oz crème fraîche Pepper to taste 1. Preheat oven to 200º C / 400ºF / Gas mark 6. Lightly butter a 25cm/ 10 inch flan tin and put in the pastry. Prick all over. 2. Beat the eggs in a bowl, add the cream to the eggs and season with the pepper. 3. Crumble half the cheese onto the pastry and then pour the cream mix over the top into the pastry case. 4. Add the peppers and then crumble in the rest of the cheese. 5. Cook for 30 minutes or until the top is brown and looks like a soufflé. 6. Remove from the oven and let it rest for about 10 minutes. Serve warm or cold.
