The top 300 businesses, ranked by 2008 turnover and exclusive of banks and other financial institutions, accounted for a
hefty 54.7% of overall turnover and for 64.7% of total net income. While their share on turnover increased only slightly
between 2007 and 2008, that of pre-tax profits increased by almost six percentage points, indicating that large and very
large firms did much better than smaller firms.
ROE in the non-bank and financial services sector deteriorated sharply in 2008. It dropped by five percentage points, from
10.6% to 5.6%. Decreases were recorded in all size groups. Medium and small sized companies recorded the highest ROE,
while that of the largest companies decreased substantially. Of course, this reversal in rankings may prove to be only
temporary and due to cyclical reasons.
