Lodge No. 515, of which he was a member. Star Lodge was instructed
to erase Brother Southcomb's name from its membership roll, and he
could then apply to Gardner Lodge for a card, and deposit it in Star
Lodge in order to obtain legal membership therein. This settlement
of the case seemed to be satisfactory to both Lodges.
In the case of Dwight Lodge No. 513, which was also referred tome
(Grand Lodge Journal, page 325), I decided that the action of the
Lodge in donating fifty dollars from its treasury for the benefit of a
baby of a brother and sister, which the Lodge in a moment of exhilaration
and enthusiasm had christened, was improper and illegal.
The donation had been invested in building and loan stock for the
benefit of the baby, and I instructed the Lodge to sell such stock and
return the money to the treasury.
Sovereign Grand Lodge.
The most important event in the year has been the meeting of
the Sovereign Grand Lodge at Springfield. This was a distinguished
honor to this jurisdiction, and it is believed the result has been and
will be mutually beneficial. The highest tribunal of the Order was
received and entertained in a manner befitting this great jurisdiction,
and the Grand Representatives from the various States and
countries returned home deeply impressed with the hospitality and
loyalty of the Odd Fellows of Illinois. This assembly within our
borders cannot fail to benefit us by inspiring the membership and increasing
their devotion to the Order and its principles. The report of
the Committee on Entertainment of the Sovereign Grand Lodge is as
