Max Cady is f<strong>in</strong>ish<strong>in</strong>g Macalester<br />

College with a bachelor’s degree<br />

<strong>in</strong> psychology. Lisa Dadian is<br />

work<strong>in</strong>g with special-needs<br />

children on Cape Cod. Jane<br />

Koopman (boys camp staff ’08,<br />

’10) is sail<strong>in</strong>g and kayak<strong>in</strong>g when<br />

she’s not hitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> books at<br />

Bowdo<strong>in</strong> College. She enjoyed<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g back at <strong>Chewonki</strong> for her<br />

summer job. Mattias Lanas<br />

loved his gap year <strong>in</strong> South<br />

America (mostly Ecuador).<br />

More recently, he’s worked as a<br />

field assistant at a research<br />

station <strong>in</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn Arizona (see<br />

www.stanford.edu/group/seeds/<br />

photos.html). Matt Lark<strong>in</strong> and<br />

Alec Morrison rode <strong>the</strong>ir bikes<br />

from Ma<strong>in</strong>e to Georgia start<strong>in</strong>g<br />

right here on <strong>Chewonki</strong> Neck.<br />

After Matt hurt his knee, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

resorted to hitchhik<strong>in</strong>g to get to<br />

California. Katr<strong>in</strong>a Moreno<br />

writes, “<strong>Chewonki</strong> really sparked<br />

my environmental <strong>in</strong>terest! I am<br />

now a history major concentrat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> environmentalism and I<br />

will be study<strong>in</strong>g susta<strong>in</strong>ability and<br />

human ecology <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Brazilian<br />

ra<strong>in</strong>forest.” Mary Ellen Pearce<br />

spent a semester <strong>in</strong> Ecuador<br />

study<strong>in</strong>g ecology and conservation<br />

through <strong>the</strong> School for<br />

International Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. “Many<br />

aspects of <strong>the</strong> program rem<strong>in</strong>ded<br />

me of MCS,” noted Mary Ellen,<br />

“especially our field trips to many<br />

different ecosystems.” Taylor<br />

Phillips spent <strong>the</strong> summer <strong>in</strong><br />

Yellowstone National Park. Ian<br />

Rutkowski is focused on environmental<br />

studies and botany at<br />

<strong>the</strong> University of Pittsburgh. His<br />

particular <strong>in</strong>terest is farm<br />

strategic plann<strong>in</strong>g. Evie Smith is<br />

tak<strong>in</strong>g a year off from <strong>the</strong> University<br />

of California, Davis, and<br />

works as an <strong>in</strong>tern at <strong>the</strong><br />

Boothbay Region Land Trust,<br />

try<strong>in</strong>g to get local high-school<br />

seniors out of <strong>the</strong> classroom and<br />

<strong>in</strong>to a community-based mentorship<br />

program. <strong>The</strong> land trust has<br />

a scholarship for students headed<br />

to <strong>Chewonki</strong> Semester School!<br />

Jaz Smith (Canoe Expedition for<br />

Ma<strong>in</strong>e Girls ’04; boys camp staff<br />

’05; girls camp staff ’08, ’09;<br />

advisor) taught environmental<br />

science at <strong>the</strong> Woolman<br />

Semester, a Quaker school run by<br />

<strong>the</strong> Sierra Friends Center, before<br />

becom<strong>in</strong>g a teacher of science and<br />

social studies to sixth, seventh,<br />

and eighth graders <strong>in</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>ast<br />

Harbor, ME. She’s a student<br />

herself, tak<strong>in</strong>g education classes<br />

part-time at nearby College of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Atlantic. She taught at<br />

<strong>Chewonki</strong> Camp for Girls this<br />

summer. David Wells is <strong>in</strong> his<br />

senior year at Bowdo<strong>in</strong> College.<br />

Last summer he raft-guided on<br />

<strong>the</strong> Penobscot River and worked<br />

at <strong>Chewonki</strong>’s Big Eddy Campground.<br />

Zar<strong>in</strong>e Alam had a wonderful<br />

summer <strong>in</strong> NYC with Kate Bell-<br />

Hart, Sally Lemonick, Annika<br />

Alexander-Oz<strong>in</strong>skas, andCloe<br />

Shasha. Zar<strong>in</strong>e is now study<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

London for a semester. Annika<br />

Alexander-Oz<strong>in</strong>skas studied<br />

earth systems, specializ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

ocean studies, at Stanford University.<br />

She’s now back at <strong>Chewonki</strong><br />

as a teach<strong>in</strong>g fellow <strong>in</strong> ma<strong>the</strong>matics<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> semester school!<br />

Carol<strong>in</strong>e Beattie graduated with<br />

a degree <strong>in</strong> Spanish from St. Olaf<br />

College and moved to St. Paul,<br />

MN, where she’ll be a literacy<br />

tutor (grades K–3) with <strong>the</strong><br />

M<strong>in</strong>nesota Literacy Council’s<br />

AmeriCorps program. She’s<br />

become a passionate ice-hockey<br />

player! Chris Biddle writes,<br />

“<strong>The</strong> more time that passes s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

I was <strong>the</strong>re, <strong>the</strong> more I feel as<br />

though I was part of someth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

really important out <strong>the</strong>re <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

woods. I’m so proud of what we<br />

learned <strong>the</strong>re.” Chris is a nonfiction<br />

writer at Warren Wilson<br />

S<strong>in</strong>gapore and plans to visit <strong>the</strong><br />

dragons <strong>in</strong> Komodo National<br />

Park <strong>in</strong> Indonesia. Andrew Karp<br />

moved to Portland, ME, after<br />

graduat<strong>in</strong>g from Bates College<br />

and is now assistant media<br />

planner at Universal McCann.<br />

He has also co-created a cloth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

label, JAQK Apparel. Emily<br />

Kuehn had a summer job <strong>in</strong> Utah<br />

work<strong>in</strong>g “on a small aquaponics<br />

system for a summer camp that<br />

grows fish and vegetables <strong>in</strong> a recirculat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

aquaculture system,”<br />

she writes. “<strong>The</strong>se systems reuse<br />

water by establish<strong>in</strong>g a complete<br />

nitrogen cycle, so I set one up <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> kitchen of my house and have<br />

been enjoy<strong>in</strong>g fresh lettuce all<br />

year.” Cloe Shasha (Wilderness<br />

Trips ’02, ’03) spent <strong>the</strong> summer<br />

at ABC News as an <strong>in</strong>tern<br />

reporter and writer. At Middlebury<br />

College, Cloe enjoys writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

for <strong>the</strong> newspaper, play<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

band, and s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> an all-female<br />

a cappella group. Ka<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>e<br />

Ripullone is tak<strong>in</strong>g a year off<br />

from her British university to<br />

work on irrigation projects <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Dom<strong>in</strong>ican Republic and to serve<br />

as a paramedic <strong>in</strong> Peru.<br />
