"Just got off phone with Kate." I cock my head to the side, letting her know I'm
listening, but also because I realize I hadn't noticed her slight accent before. Russian
maybe? "She and Ed broke up."
I had a feeling that's what happened when she stormed out of here, but I don't say
as much. I keep my face neutral trying to assess Renee's position on things.
After a few seconds, I see her cheek twitching before her face cracks into a smile.
Shrugging she continues. "I should care. I don't."
"Why not?" I ask again. "I thought you were friends. But wait, why shouldn't you
like me?"
Glancing over her shoulder, at who I assume is Edward, and then back to me, she
smirks. "Kate's is a bitch," she says, this time her accent clear. "I hook her up with
Edward thinking . . . maybe time with man will calm her down. He give her no time,
she still a bitch." She shrugs. "She say's it your fault."
I know Renee meant no harm by it, and it shouldn't bother me Kate said I'm the
reason she and Edward broke up—if that's what they did—but it does trouble me a
little. I can't deny it.
Later that night after putting EJ to bed, Edward and I go through his gifts again and
of course spend some time reminiscing on the pasttwo years of his life. We also
catch up on things we've missed this past week. Which isn't much.
"God that was torture," he groans. "Let's not do that again."
"Do what?"
"Barely speak for a week."
I reach my hand out for him to shake. "Deal."
He holds on to my hands a little longer than necessary before clearing his throat and
running his hands through his hair.
"So, I saw you talking to James earlier."
"Yup!"
