'Thank you', he moves out of the doorway allowing Kate to walk in.<br />

Arms crossed and legs wide—<strong>my</strong> defensive stance is set in place, I tell her, "Don't<br />

think I'm above fighting you at <strong>my</strong> mother's party."<br />

"I don't want to fight," she rushes out. "I honestly <strong>just</strong> want to apologize to you, and<br />

well, to your family." I'm not sold, but I nod for her to continue. Blowing out a breath,<br />

she begins. "I'm totally not the bitch I came off as before."<br />

I give her no response.<br />

"Okay, so that's not completely true. I can be a bitch, we all can but that's only<br />

'cause I felt threatened."<br />

"Threatened?"<br />

She nods. "I hated you before I met you."<br />

"Gee thanks," I mutter dryly.<br />

"It's <strong>just</strong> that . . . I used to model, right. And now I manage models. I'm used to<br />

having guys eating out of the palm of <strong>my</strong> hand. And Edward . . . well, he couldn't be<br />

less impressed with the fact if he tried."<br />

I take in an annoyed breath. This doesn't sound like an apology to me.<br />

"I am sorry." Oh, I guess I said that part out loud. "I'm <strong>just</strong> saying, I was jealous of<br />

you since the first time I heard your name—on our first date. You, your sisters, and<br />

EJ, that's all he talked about. It was actually pretty obnoxious to be honest, but<br />

endearing at the same time."<br />

"Kate, why are you telling me this?" I finally ask. "Why do you care, now, what I think<br />

about you?"<br />

She sighs. "Renee might not realize it, but she's one of <strong>my</strong> only friends. Granted,<br />

she doesn't always have the nicest things to say about me, but that's how we work.<br />

And the way I treated you all, she made it clear how disappointed she was and<br />

would have no problem replacing me—as a friend and manager—if I couldn't get<br />

along with her new family."<br />

The corner of <strong>my</strong> mouth lifts up at the assessment Renee gave us, but it falls. "So<br />

either you're only apologizing 'cause Renee's making you, or you're trying to butter
