Fed up with having all the doors slammed in his face, one day he devised a strategy to get food. He grabbed a stone from the roadside and knocked at the first house he found which seemed to belong to an affluent family. When the lady owner of the house opened the door, he said to her: - Good morning, my good lady. I’m a poor beggar and I don’t have anything to eat. If you were so kind to get me a pan with water, I’ll take care myself of making some broth with this stone. The irritated old lady said to him that it did not cost her anything to put a pan of water on the fire for him, but she was sceptical about the recipe of the beggar. However, she let him in and placed a pan of water to heat up for him. The beggar put the stone inside it and said to the lady: - Well, now we just have to wait for it to be well cooked. - But you’re not going to be able to eat that – said the woman. – What sort of broth can you make S T ON E B R OT H from a stone, without any cabbage or meat or anything? - No worries! I’ll cook the best broth in the world, madam, because stones have lots of substance. But of course – he continued – it would come out even better with a bunch of those cabbages that you have on the table... just to add a bit of colour to it, noth- ing else. - Okay, then, put some in, son, if you think that they’ll go well with it. And the beggar put a bunch of cabbage leaves in the pan and then he said: - Now, if you had a piece of lard, even if it’s just to give it a bit more consistency, the broth would come out a lot tastier... - I have, son, I have. Here you go then. - Many thanks, then... and some little potatoes wouldn’t go badly with it either. Oh no, madam, even if it was just to make it fuller... And in this manner, he went on asking for all sorts of ingredients, from a pig’s head to chouri- zos, thick and thin, from lard, to ham, and so on,

Once everything was nicely cooked, the beggar said: - Well, this is all ready. Would you like to try it, madam? - Fat chance. I’ll not try it. This can’t taste of anything! - No way! How can you say that? You try it and tell me if my stone did or did not make a really tasty broth. The woman tried the broth and cried: - Oh, dear!
