Activities/ Body movement training Pàg. 40. s’Encruia workshop To a large extent, body language has been pushed aside by verbal language, and this has severely limited our ideas and emotions. To sensitize and tone up our organism, we must first learn to listen to it. To understand the our body’s potential, its different movements and expressions, needs constant work, a space in which to investigate freely and, above all, a sense of playfulness. The aim of this course is to rid ourselves of old habits of movement and to create new ones through dance, theatre and play. It’s not so much a question of learning new or original ways of moving one’s body, as much as unlearning, to bring our movements into line with our true essence and to shed old habits which block the flow of creative and vital energy. By broadening our scope and repertoire of movements we are helping to free the expression of our emotions, thoughts and behaviour. This workshop is aimed at all those who feel the need to investigate all their potential in the field of movementa and physical expression. It is for actors and non-actors, dancers and non-dancers. It will be given by Concha Vidal, an actress and body language specialist with a degree in Psychology from the Ramon Llull University in Barcelona. Where: Sa Tanca Cultural Centre, Deià When: The first and third Saturday of the month, 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm Art / Serafine Klarwein An ‘Improved’ Auction (Photos by Mascha Vasikovskaya) It was a night to remember and to forget. Remember Mati and forget his disappearance- if just a little while, English text enough to indulge in the laughter and warmth still resonating from his existence. Abdul Mati Klarwein was a lover of light, painter of light, dreamer of light who has lived on and off in Deia for the past 50 years and there he passed away March 7, 2002. Up to his very end, he has painted in detail Deia’s inducinogenic landscapes, mysterious inhabitants and symbolic activities. He has also painted other worldviews and with other approaches involving less detail and more conceptual humor. His ‘improved’ paintings (reciclados) marked a period when he realized a break from the determined visual descriptiveness of his recognized style. By painting a personal enhancement to these ‘ready-made’ paintings, which he bought mostly from flea markets (claiming they never cost more than the equivalent in raw canvas & stretcher), he was freer to try out different styles and visual encoding mechanisms. For example, his painting that was sold at this auction, started out as a souvenir-style figurative metal tableaux depicting a calm acquarian landscape of metal fish and metal seaweed and ended up being adorned with an orgy of flesh-colored bubbles transforming the formalistic static original into a restless torment of joy. Well, anyway, when he left, he left behind fifty ‘un-improved’ paintings with which his family did not know what to do – too painful to dump his collection yet too untouched to keep and too difficult to sell. So the idea was hatched (concurrently with other ideas to keep Mati’s flame alive) to ask Deia locals and visitors to take part in this painting exercise of seconddegree compositions and then auction off these works to help benefit the family in their quest to create a cultural center thus enabling a continuation of Mati’s legacy. Mati had started planning a cultural center, after being inspired by the example of the very active and imaginative collective Casa del Cactus in Es Trenc. He imagined a place where art could be as interactive and flexible as the visitors. A place to be inspired (with a truly sustainable garden and film festivals), to research (healthy brain foods and access to rare and intense documentation), to create (workshops & residencies), to meditate and ressource (music, sound and image libraries) and of course a place to dance. The family has also added the idea of a permanent space to exhibit his major work ‘The Crucifixion (Freedom of Expression)’ with changing accompanying installations and a temporary space with rolling exhibitions of Mati’s various works as well as works of contemporaries who have inspired him (among them: Annie Truxell, Erro, Ernst Fuchs, Balthazar & Salvador Klarwein, etc.). The main fact being that there is nowhere on this planet where Mati’s work can be enjoyed in a public and continuous manner. And the main un-fact is that his legacy reaches far beyond painting and into deep thought responses about human interaction, scientific progress, ecology, and the chemistries of happiness. And the explored breadth of this investigation could benefit the fascination impulses of other curious humans through its synthesis as an engaging multi-media natural-cultural space – an inner space to explore. But, um, all this remains an idea(l) if it stays without positive effort to actualize it and without neutral funds to bring it into an unbiased reality. So this auction was a first step of the many to come. The whole event took three weeks preparation: distributing the ‘untouched’ paintings (Sa Fonda kindly lent a space for them to await being
picked out), allowing the creative ingredients to respond and cook into the canvas, collecting the combined results (all in all 40 artists reproduced 50 paintings), showing them for three days at Max gallery (Tina kindly lent her downstairs and patiently put up with the ensuing improvised mayhem), and finally, find the right auctioneer. And find was found, and how, in the shape of elegance, humor and provocativeness of Mister Curtis Jones. At 11 pm on Tuesday 20th of August, Curtis got on ‘stage’ at Sa Fonda and nobody left until 3 am. For four hours, Curtis kept a hypnotic trance circulating while he juggled a gavel, his glasses, the sales list, joints and many CubaLibres (muy libre) - all on one stool. Pixie and Salvador took turns showing each painting around and keeping track of the racing bids as Curtis egged on the onlookers to look further into the paintings and further into their pockets. His shouts introducing the glories of Letitia Bermejo’s ‘Frog Hat’ or Annie Lennox’s ‘Christ Dog Terror’ could be heard all the way across town. He cajoled buyers to promote young talents: "You don’t want to lose this young man to the big city – wait ‘til he grows up and you’ll really regret it." Curtis’ burbling laughter rolling around as he lauded the Deyans for their artistic acuity recognizing where credit was due: "Come on! This painting comes from a Graves, if it weren’t for them, none of us would be here, right?" and he threatened us with not returning if certain genius was left unacknowledged: "I mean, just look at this painting, how can you live without it". And he sang, incited, and improvised his way through a nonstop challenge that he turned into a timeless ritual of community. AND he sold every single painting (and someti- mes tried to sell their owners too) and managed to raise over 8000 euros for the cause, hitting a target over 700% further than the estimated expectation. And generous buyers and painters and all those involved got more than just an image transaction, they bought and made and partook in a general state of overwhelming excitement and enjoyment. And this is a lot what Mati was about and hopefully what his cultural center will be about too. These first funds will be used for the scouting of locations, the cataloging of Mati’s creative (and very chaotic) resources, and the proper development of a proposal to present to eventual contributors, sponsors and future participants. Funds are also necessary to re-record his massive music collection (a lifetime of recordings from different countries, especially african, spanish and latinamerican; all in danger of disappearing from damage by humidity and use), to refurbish his rare film collection (unstable supports) and to restore his painting ‘The Crucifixion’ badly damaged over the years. Many other material necessities need tending to so as to be able to offer the full perspective. Other fundraising events are in the planning- any photographers interested in being involved with the next plan of advancement are ecstatically welcome to contact the Klarwein family at 629 471 000. That ‘stage’ will be set in the next few months culminating into a tragic comedy commemorating Mati’s release from this sad, beautiful, stubborn and enlightened world which he loved and painted.
